Dapper Dave Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 Coming back from the lunch shop, the dashboard therm-o-meter read 111 degrees. I haven't been able to get close to my bullet casting setup, the mere thought of being in front of 700 degree molten lead in this heat... So, I got a package in the mail. Many of you here know EXACTLY what this means... Yes, I ordered Bullets By Scarlett, I did indeed. I haven't paid for bullets in years, other than JHPs, been doing my own casting for 20 years, powdercoating for 15, UNTIL TODAY... Not just because it's hotter than a Hell Hounds fart, not just because I cooked a medium rare steak on my front porch swing, not just because I watched a drop of sweat evaporate before it hit ground, but also because everyone here speaks so highly of Miss Scarlett and her wares, so I just had to go down to the crik an' see for myself! So far, ma'am, so far these look mighty fine, be putting some of them in cases tomorrow night, I will! Thankee kindly, ma'am!
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 With the time you will be saving by not casting now you will be able to dust off your keyboard!

Cholla Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 It's supposed to be 118 degrees on Thursday. Hopefully I can stay in Prescott those days, but it will still be over 100 here.
Dapper Dave Posted August 2, 2025 Author Posted August 2, 2025 I usually do my casting between November and March, but I failed to take into account the increased number of bullets I'd be needin', mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. 😧 Yes, my keyboard WAS dusty, but I used the compressed air and blew the dust offa it, so all's well.
Dapper Dave Posted August 2, 2025 Author Posted August 2, 2025 We're going to be shooting our match tomorrow in 110+ weather. MUCH water will be consumed. 3 hours ago, Eyesa Horg said: Do they both come with hugs? There IS a coupon for a free hug...had no idea...

Boggus Deal #64218 Posted August 2, 2025 Posted August 2, 2025 I don’t even shoot the bullets! I just buy @Scarlett’s bullets to get the hugs!

I was in the Tucson area from July to September 2019 and enjoyed it especially the cool down nights! Here it stays steamy all the time!

But yes, dry heat is better than wet heat, unless you are in a sauna...deliberately...
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted August 2, 2025 Posted August 2, 2025 I decided years ago that casting bullets I can buy in bulk was not the best use of time. I also prefer coated bullets and don't want to bake on the coating myself. I do cast bullets unavailable commercially. I cast everything during COVID when bullet supplies dried up. Nice thing about coated bullets is there is no wax to melt off during shipment during hot summer months. Scarlet supplies good bullets and is a generous sponsor of many SASS matches.

Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted August 3, 2025 Posted August 3, 2025 Today at the Plum Creek Shooting Society in Texas the humidity was off the charts, with zero wind most of the time. This entire wrist cuff at the beginning of the match was the lighter color that is barely noticeable after. I would prefer a dry heat, thank you! Plus those cool scarves and such work in dry heat but not in humidity.

Scarlett thanks scarlet the first death was 102 , the pending is 94 , its not like they did not enrich our lives and those of others well enough , its just that we all hate seeing them go after all the good times together , tomorrow is the 102 funeral , BTW no prayers needed she was a nun that served her convent well , had a lot of very impressive credentials as a nurse and teacher , she has already earned her place the wedding oon the cruise ship on lake minnetonka was fabulous , it was a long day of driving for me as i got volunteered to be the designated cab for a few of the family , the boat was great , the staff was great , the food was great - walleye and prime rib , oh and cheese cake near the end , nothing bad just almost 5 hours of driving at the end , got to bed about 01:30 and up for work today at 8 .....yes im retired and yes this part time job could go away with no change in my life - thats not the point , i do it because i love it and it gives me a reason ,
Dapper Dave Posted August 4, 2025 Author Posted August 4, 2025 My wife is the same way, retired but still working because she got bored very quickly, since I am not yet retired. Sorry about the funerals, sir, been there, done that, never have to go to a family funeral again since they've all passed on. Well, except for me, and I'll be late to that one. Back on track, loaded up several batches of testers last night with ZIP, AA#2 and HS-6, test fire this weekend, yay!

Dapper Dave Posted August 4, 2025 Author Posted August 4, 2025 I've been using Ramshot ZIP since I started, good powder for my 125gr Lee home cast projectiles. But new bullet, new testing, just to be sure! AA#2 and HS-6 I usually use for 9mm...but why not, eh?
Dapper Dave Posted August 8, 2025 Author Posted August 8, 2025 So, just to say I did, this is what I did with my first loads with Scarlett's Little Lethal Lipsticks. That sun was just peeking over the "mountains", and it was already well over 90 degrees. The shade on the firing line won't be effective until the sun is well up in the sky, and I must skedaddle quick - the bug man is coming, and my lady wife is sleeping. Target is ten yards, because that's what we shoot at, and the scoring rings are far smaller than the steel we shoot. The conclusions are obvious; 1) I'm an idiot, I forgot to bring the rifle to check operation. I will load more. (Gee, darn) 2) The pistol is more accurate than I am. Actually, compared to some pards, I can't shoot worth a darn. 3) Scarlett sells good bullets that do exactly as advertised. 4) It is too HOT - as I type this it is, per ABC, 95 degrees outside and it's not 8 AM yet. 5) Any of these loads will work just fine, and I have a ton of AA#2 to use up. 6) Any day at the range, even when hot as the hinges of Hades, is better than a day at work.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 DD, there is a solution Arizona summer heat. Take a short drive east to New Mexico and shoot one of our annual matches. Our higher elevation makes for cooler summers. It's only 78 degrees this morning. My club has its annual match in mid-September and there is still plenty of room for shooters. Lodging is not pricey and any route you drive is scenic.
Dapper Dave Posted August 8, 2025 Author Posted August 8, 2025 Sounds like fun, but I'm still a working stiff for 1,423 days...not that I'm counting or anything. THEN, then I will be retired, and me and the Missus can travel freely.
