If you was rich

And you owned more than one place to live.

If you went from your main residence to your vacation home, would you take luggage?

Or would you have clothes at your vacation home?

There is an online novel. Carl is a billionaire. He lives in Maryland but he has a vacation home in the Bahamas. Carl has just been elected to congress, and he and his wife are taking one last vacation before he's got to settle down and be a congressman. They've told him that it's bad enough he was a billionaire but if people found out that he was taking vacation outside the US - oh my God.

So when he shows up he finds out that, since he's a new congressman, he's been invited to dinner with the prime minister of the islands. And all they had brought was sundresses and bathing suits for her and shorts and khakis and a bathing suit for him. Didn't bring anything for going to a dinner party. So they have to go shopping.

And I just thought, if I had that kind of money, and I owned this other home - I would have everything I needed at the other home. So I wouldn't have to pack my bathing suit, or my best blue suit, or my tuxedo. I would have that all covered, down there in my vacation home in the closet.

Would that be weird?

Why would he expect to ever need a tuxedo while vacationing in the Bahamas?

If we are talking lottry winnings..e quiet and continue to work...Then while working, find very good money planner.....And quietly work threw all the needs...A lot of money out many family members you knew you had...Invest some, save some you get to fast if needed....Then slowly, slow down working.....If you can look for easier job or go back to school.....

That would also depend on your age 25  vs 60 well why work if retire in a few years .

Mine would be easy buy a smaller ranch few cows, horses , nice house and barn and live off interest , other than my mom and my kids have no other living family that i care about so i would make sure they are taken care of . (okay and a shooting range on the Ranch and a very nice Gun storage room and ammo room:) )

A billionaire with a vacation home in the bahamas has already got a standing dinner reservation with the prime minister. The GDP of the country is only 15 billion

I'm not rich.

In 1972 my dad built a small cabin on my grandparents farm in SW Va.   As a kid this is where our family spent EVERY vacation.  Time passed and I assumed responsibility and ownership of the cabin.  Before the damnpanic we would average one weekend a month there.  The place was fully stocked with everything you would need.  We even kept some non-perishable food items there such as canned goods, spices, cooking oil, etc.  Most every tool at home was duplicated there.  We did NOT keep clothes there.   Sure there were jackets and over shirts hanging by the door that stayed year-round, but every trip we packed "clothes".  But that's all we packed.

"Sold" the place to my sister in 2022, who now lives there full time.

Being rich is telling your mechanic to just fix the car without being worried about the cost.

Beyond that you are just showing off.

If I won the powerball or some such, I doubt I would bother with a second home. I'm 71, and I love Tucson. Now I WOULD build a fairly good sized house, three stories, wraparound porch, glassed in turret with .50 cal on top, etc. But I can't see "living" in two, or more, different places. I don't have any family worth talking to back in Ohio, and if I were to travel someplace I'd just either stay in a decent hotel, or more likely my RV.

Now if that had happened years ago, it might have been different. I would have bought the Mortgage that my ex-sister had on the family home, forclosed on it, and used it for a vacation home in Ohio just to spite her. That would have been before my friend died. HE was the only reason I went back there.

But to the original question, if I had multiple homes, I would keep the clothing I needed there. One reason for having them would be that they are in different climates, requiring different types of clothing. If something unexpected came up, buy what I needed.

If I were wealthy,

I might own a cabin or such in the mountains nearby. A place where I could go to get away, particularly from those who annoy me.

The place I live in now suits me fine. I might add a deck or screened in porch. Perhaps another room for the youngest grandson.

I would air condition the shop and maybe add another outbuilding for the lawnmower and a carport.

It’s highly doubtful that I would ever buy a suit or much of anything different than what is in my closets now.  What you see is what you’re gonna get!

A couple changes of clothes would probably stay at the cabin, but I would still pack clothing because it is doubtful that I would bother with laundry facilities there.

+1 with the exception of slight possiblity I might buy some special clothes for a funeral or the sort. Otherwise and even then, my cowboy outfit with my frock coat and high boots might just be the ticket!

I'd probably keep a few clothes at both places and increase the volume of clothing over the years.....assuming I'm that rich.

But actually, I'll probably just have one home.   I would tend to give most of my $$$ away to good charities (children's hospitals, ST.Jude's,

etc...)

I probably would have a couple trucks, maybe customize em.

And I'd hire TW to be my handyman, lawn care guy.

And I'd hire a professional cook with expertise in seafood and hotdogs/slawdogs.

..........Widder

If I was rich I wouldn't even talk  to people like me, much less hang out where clothes mattered as long as they were comfortable.

If I were rich, we're the ONLY kind of people I would talk to. As for my attire, I'd still dress like I do now, and anybody that objected would be told where they could shove it.

If I were rich I build a big, tall house with rooms by the dozen, far from the bustle of the town.

To actually answer the question,  I'd keep clothes at each residence.  Travel with a couple of days worth of clothes.

I wouldn't be hangin' out with the types that hang out in this saloon!!!

Not a chance I'd have a 2nd home.  What I would do is buy an RV to live in for a while, have the manufactured home we live in now removed, build a new place to my own specs (still, likely around 1500 sq ft) in the same spot.  We love it here and plan to spend the rest of our lives here.  I'd also have the driveway paved, along with the inside of my garage.

Oh, I'd put in my 2 weeks notice if I suddenly became wealthy.  I've hit a point where I would be happy to stop working.

I’d buy a big piece of property here in WV and have a small house with a 6 car…No, 8 car garage with an additional shop. There would be a shooting range with a heated and cooled shoot house.
There would be no second house. We’d stay in nice hotels everywhere we went away from home.
So, yeah, we’d take clothes with us.

I always figured that if I'd have "hit it" while I was still working, I'd do the same. However, there would have been some changes, like having a chauffeur driven' limo take me to and from work.

Oh yeah, as a part of the house I mentioned previously, there would be a basement shooting range, and a sub-basement for several years food storage. And a garage big enough for about 10 cars, a lift for working on them, and storage for the RV.

While I'm at it, my three story house would have an elevator, spiral staircase, and a Fireman's Pole to get from the Master Suite to downstairs.:D

Not rich by any means, but back in the early 90's the Former Missus Hardpan and I had two homes for a couple o' years ~ a small bungalow in the Bay Area near (sorta)* where we both worked, and a 2,200 sq ft ranch style house we had built on a one hectare (2 1/2 acres) lot in the Central Valley, built and planned for an eventual relocation.  Which we eventually did!  Traded a high $$, super high stress career for a simple job and a life in the country.

*The missus had an eight minute commute; my daily round-trip from Vallejo to the office in S F averaged a bit over 5 1/2 hours.  Every day.  With typical work-weeks of 50 - 60 hours.

We'd spend about one weekend a month at our "country estate," holidays, and a week or so in the summer.  Had a tractor and tools there, non-perishible foods, some frozen stuff, and other fun items.  Not that there was much time for fun!  Actually, "hobby farming" was fun.

Anyway, like @Stump Water, other than work boots, gloves, and such, we'd take our duds back and forth... much easier to do laundry at the "northern" home.

I knew people in California that made commutes like that daily. Mostly so they could own a home that they could afford and so that their family could have a better quality of life. I was fed up with 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours of commuting (depending on traffic, when I left for or from work).

Riding a motorcycle made a huge difference in my commutes. My normal commute became 1 1/2 hours total.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled Alpo thread…

if i was rich and had multiple houses [BTW one is enough] id have everything i needed at both locations including my jeans and sweatshirts or T-shirts , id not need a tux anywhere - ill never tie another tie till i die - and someone else would do that if my wishes were ignored [to be cremate after organ donation if there is anything they might want-not likely as im wearing everything out these days] ive not got any great expectations of a reallylong life already outlived what i expected for many reasons , but i did sign off as a donor and if something is of value i want it used , but i dont want to take up real estate after inn gone  , there is a reason for that in the past i suppose but im not that person , i want my ashes spread ,

I'm of the same mind. I see no reason for my moldering corpse to be taking up ground space after I'm not using it any more. Ashes in the backyard.

that works for me if i live here when i die - ive been here near half my life and near everywhere else in the country before that , much as i dislike somee things here its always been a beautiful place to live and as a final resting place id accept that l, if we move as planned we will find another spot for my wife to put me - i wont inconvenience her with some long trip as ill be happy wherever we are at that time k,

ive traveled enough to know about alot of places there are some we still are looking to see , she can drop me in multiple places and i will be good with that ,
