Alpo Posted July 8 Posted July 8 James Garner movie. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF. He's telling his deputy, Jack Elam, that he is on his way to Australia. Jack wants to know what's so great about Australia. Chicken Jim read a book about Australia in the library in Chicago, and is sharing this knowledge with Jack. "They got a animal down there that hops, and carries things in his stomach, and will box you." That's a kangaroo. I know they got kangaroos in Oz. "They got a stick that you throw away and it'll come back to you." Boomerang. Got it. "They got these little people about this high," and he holds his hand out about even with his belt. I never heard of Australia having pygmies. Does it? Or was the book in Chicago confused?

I do believe they are smaller in stature than white people of the country.

I do believe they are smaller in stature than white people of the country. I have seen Aborigines in two movies. In Quigley they were shorter than Tom Selleck, but most people are shorter than Tom Selleck. And in Crocodile Dundee they were a little shorter than Paul Hogan, but certainly not "pygmy short". The blacks in both of those movies, based solely on their hair, were not African, so I assume they were actual Aborigines.

Just a guess, I’ve seen both of those movies as well but like I said maybe the writer of the book was exaggerating?

Earlier writings applied the term to the indigenous peoples of North Queensland. While not true (genetic) pygmies, they were a bit shorter. The term is factually incorrect but usage is historically real.
