Alpo Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 There are some people that carry a gun all the time. Not just when they're not at the house - all the time. So if they were sitting down to supper, for example, and somebody kicked in their front door, they've got a gun to shoot the home invader. There are other people who don't wish to carry a gun all the time, and instead they have guns stashed here and there throughout their house. So if they were cooking supper and someone kicked in the front door, there's a pistol over there next to the microwave. If they're taking a shower when the door is kicked in, there's a pistol in the medicine cabinet. My question is for those people. Do you keep spare ammunition with the gun? I thought of this one night while watching NCIS (oh god, not another damn NCIS question). This was the end of season 13 or 14 - Ziva came back. She was supposed to be dead, and Gibbs is down in the basement working on something, and she comes tripping lightly down the stairs. That's how the episode ended and that was the last episode in that year. The next year it picks up there and we find out that someone is trying to kill her and they have decided to go after Gibbs. Because of his and her relationship. I think they wanted to kidnap him to use him as a hostage to get her. I think. Regardless. While they are down in the basement the bad guys come in upstairs and start shooting. Ziva returns fire. Gibbs opens the secret drawer under the workbench and pulls out an automatic of some sort - he used to have a two and a half inch Model 66, but he has upgraded. And they both shoot like they've got all the ammunition in the world - bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang. Then Ziva asks if Gibbs has any spare ammo. He says no - didn't she have any? She said that she was traveling light, whatever that means. If you don't have very much ammunition don't act like your pistol is a machine gun. But I digress. So there they are down in the basement. Two pistols, no ammo. Hmmm. That seems kind of dumb. Now there is spare ammunition - 15 to 20 rounds average - next to every pistol I have stashed in the house. Except the one automatic but I only have one magazine for it so hopefully nobody breaks in while I'm in that bathroom because I've only got nine rounds.
Eyesa Horg Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 And then there's the libtards that say your gun should always be locked with ammo locked somewhere else! Yeh, hang on Mr. Thug, I got a go get my gun and ammo! Criminals are patient that way, bless their hearts.
Texas Joker Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 Travelling light: pistol in holster maybe a spare mag. Not really expecting trouble ready for defense. Travelling heavy: loaded for bear or a walk down mainstreet falluja. Long gun spare mags, pistol spare mags, armor. A couple buddies... And since it's NCIS at least 2 knives.
Cypress Sun Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 Just make sure you don't do this! And don't pay attention to the stupid title of the clip.
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 I don't. I have a couple Taurus 85s hidden near each door. They're only 5 shots, but my house is small enough that I SHOULD be able to get to my bedroom where my Mossberg 500 is if needed. IT has a 7 round magazine, 7 round side saddle, and an additional 5 rounds on the buttstock. And 3 of THEM are slugs. I'm not that concerned with somebody suddenly kicking in my door for 2 reasons: (1). I have a security camera system set up that watches 3 sides of the approach. The cameras are connected to my T.V., which is usually on even if we're not watching it, set to that input. If we're watching, a simple press of a button on the remote changes the input so that we can see them. I'm not too concerned with the 4th side (south), because my backyard neighbor is not only a good neighbor, but a GREAT neighbor. He's erected an 8 FOOT block wall between our properties. If the Bad Guys come that way, first they have to get through his yard, protected by walls and steel gates, then they still have to get over the wall. The west side is also protected by an 8 ft block wall because the city and the Railroad have one there to try to keep the bums off their property on the other side of that. The backyard is protected by not only those, but a 6' fence with a secured gate. They could get through that, but first they have to get to it. One of the cameras is set so that it can see that side from the street all the way to that gate. On the East side, where my other neighbor lives is a simple chain-link fence that goes all the way to the street. Wouldn't be worth the bother to jump that because they'd still have to transverse the yard to get to the door. (2). I have driveway alarm sensors set up monitoring both entrances in the front, (street side) of the property. If anybody walks past either of those, I get an alarm inside giving me time to at least access my front door gun, one of the aforementioned Taurus 85s, or access the shotgun if I would think it appropriate. To get to my previously mentioned 6' fence, they first have to go past that sensor. Even if I'm dead asleep, that alarm wakes me up, and that shotgun is right by my bed if needed, as is my 1911. While I don't have spare ammo WITH the 1911, the spare mag pouch is on my dresser only a few feet away where I could access it if needed. I suppose that if they were really determined, they could get to me, but I'm just not that important to make it worth the bother. I don't KNOW any Israeli assassins or spys.

ShadowCatcher Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 I don't know about you folks, but when I was a kid I had no trouble finding all the places my parents would hide gifts, especially Christmas gifts. The last thing I ever want to do is come home from the market, and walk into a group of teens or older who not only snuck into my house, but also found one or more of my guns. Nor a whole lot better is to find out they took them and ran away - now my guns are on the street being sold to other bad guys. Worst of all is when a neighbor comes to visit my beautiful bride and brings along a child old enough to be unattended for a bit, then having them discover one can potentially be so heart breaking. I carry my pistol and at least one reload, two if a single stack. I keep it with me until bed time, then it's out of sight but within grasp range. My theory about gun control is I want to be in control of every gun in my house at all times. Just my $0.02 worth. SC
Pat Riot Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 I keep guns through out the house. Some have extra ammo, some don’t. I have been considering getting a couple more Ruger RXMs and stashing them in various places with extra mags. 2 of my current HD guns are nice revolvers I wouldn’t want the cops holding as evidence. Maybe I should a couple or 4 Hi Point 9mm pistols. Inexpensive and reliable. Sportsman’s Warehouse has the 8 shot model on sale for $105. I kid you not! https://www.sportsmans.com/c/cat139633-hpf-handguns-under-200

Blackwater 53393 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 You just don’t know, do ya’?? My neighbors KNOW that I am armed and that I shoot pretty well. So does the sheriff and his deputies. Alpo Posted July 2, 2025 Author Posted July 2, 2025 That would be a gun in both hands, wouldn't it? New York reload is when I shoot my gun empty and stash it away and pull my spare gun. Already having my spare gun out when my first gun runs dry seems like it would be a little quicker. A step up.

Alpo Posted July 2, 2025 Author Posted July 2, 2025 I don't think so. I don't shoot it, but I think gunfighter has both guns out, but you alternate them - shoot left gun, shoot right gun, shoot left gun, shoot right gun, etc. What I was describing was shoot the right gun until it's empty and then start shooting the left gun. I was thinking double duelist, but I believe double duelist you can only have one gun out at the time, so that would basically be a New York reload - shoot the right gun empty, holster it and draw the left gun.

I think that Double Duelist is both guns out, fire first gun dry, then fire second without holstering the first.
Alpo Posted July 2, 2025 Author Posted July 2, 2025 I thought the Duelist just meant you shot with one hand. So you could draw your right gun and shoot it till it's empty and then holster it, and then draw your left gun and pass it over to your right hand and shoot it empty, then give it back to your left hand and reholster it. Duelist But double duelist, again I thought, we should shoot the right gun with your right hand and then you holster it and draw your left gun and shoot it with your left hand. But I thought the only category you were allowed to have two pistols out at the same time was gunfighter.

Hopefully Pale Wolf Brunelle will chime in and correct me. Upon reflection, I think that you're correct. The difference is that Duelists fire one handed, unlike the rest of us.
Calico Jack Posted July 2, 2025 Posted July 2, 2025 Pretty sure Alpo nailed it! Alpo, what do we call it once those two guns are spent and you switch to the next loaded handgun/shotgun/rifle? An LA reload or a Josey Wales reload? Lol
Blackwater 53393 Posted July 2, 2025 Posted July 2, 2025 Shooting Gunfighter doesn’t REQUIRE that you alternate firing drawn revolvers. It doesn’t even REQUIRE that you present both guns at the same time!! It DOES require that you shoot one revolver from each hand and that the gun be cocked and fired with that hand unsupported. A shooter in the Gunfighter category has the option of shooting with both guns presented or may shoot any stage “Double Duelist”! The shooter may also draw both guns and “fire one dry” and then do the same with the other or fire his/her guns in any other order they choose. They MUST engage the targets in the same sequence as everyone else, but which gun they shoot is their choice!

Sedalia Dave Posted July 3, 2025 Posted July 3, 2025 Duelist or Double Duelist is only allowed to have ONE LOADED revolver in hand (not holstered or touching the prop where staged at a time. Gunfighter can have TWO LOADED revolvers in hand but there is no requirement to do so. On 7/1/2025 at 10:43 PM, Alpo said: I don't think so. Double Duelist simply means that the shooter shoots each revolver with a different hand. Otherwise the rules for Duelist and Double Duelist are the same. Neither Duelist nor Double Duelist can have two LOADED revolvers in hand at the same time. So a Duelist or Double Duelist can pull one pistol and shoot all 5 rounds. They can then pull the second pistol and begin to fire it without having to holster/restage the first pistol. However if there is a live round in pistol one and you draw and cock pistol two before you holster pistol one you earn a SDQ. The only category that allows two LOADED pistols in hand at the same time is Gunfighter.
