Calamity Kris Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 I seriously wonder what society is becoming. I recently drove to the pharmacy to pick up an order. As I was leaving, a younger couple in a rather new Camry cut me off to get into the left turn lane. Apparently, the line for the left turn was WAY too long to wait in. I honked at them for wedging themselves between my car and the car in front of me, with their back end sticking out into the next lane. After turning left, I moved to the right so I could get into the right turn lane. The passenger rolled down their window and screamed "BIGOT" as loud as they could. I didn't turn to look. I just went on my way. I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a couple of things. I have a state issued temporary handicapped parking placard. I happened to take the last handicapped spot in front of the store. As I was exiting my car, a woman pulled up behind me with the ugliest, meanest of looks as if my parking there was depriving her family of food. I hobbled into the store, quietly shaking my head. I found a pair of shoes that I can wear with my walking cast that don't require me to wear equalizers. {Equalizers lift the bottom of your non-casted shoe up to the same height as your casted foot.} Equalizers pinch and are very uncomfortable to wear for extended periods. According to FedEx, a pair of these shoes was delivered at 9:11 pm last night. They were left in front of the garage door. I looked around for them and didn't see them. Uno went out and looked this morning and he didn't see them either. We aren't likely to have porch pirates because our front door is not visible from the road and neither is the garage door, unless the porch pirate was following FedEx around. That's $140.00 out the window. {They are very good shoes and was looking forward to wearing them once my foot is released from it's encasement.} All of this happened within the last couple of weeks. What is going on here? Have we all gone mad? Rant off. Thank you for understanding. I received a text from one of my neighbors this afternoon. He said he had my package and would bring it over. Uno was outside when he came over. The neighbor told Uno that the FedEx driver knocked on their door at 10:00 pm. The driver apologized for being so late but he had a flat tire. The neighbor said no worries they weren't expecting anything anyway. This morning they were about to open the box when they realized it was addressed to me. I'm happy to have my shoes back.
Rip Snorter Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 Ask the delivery service to send photos. You can't even see our house from the road and they take photos even when I am home to receive the PKG.
J-BAR #18287 Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 I love staying at home most of the time. If you can swing retirement, do it as soon as possible. It minimizes contact with jerks.
Dr. Zook Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 Your comment about the grocery reminds me of pulling into the parking lot of our local store and seeing a lifted pickup that you'd need a small ladder to get into the cab, sat there for a moment and watched a spry young woman climb up into the cab w/o difficulty- permanent handicap placard hanging on the rear view mirror. Another is a lack of respect and patience for handicapped people. These impatient people dont realize it could be them one day or one second later.
Eyesa Horg Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 Yup, the entitled seem to rule today. It's quite disappointing. Hope you find your package Kris.
Chantry Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 It's bad and getting worse. Part of the problem is the lack of consequences for these people, probably starting in school. It's all about "Me, me, me". “A dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than is a riot.” ― Robert A. Heinlein
Sedalia Dave Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 @Calamity Kris Rant away. That's just one of the many things the Saloon is here for.
Rip Snorter Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 "An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life." Also RAH

DZs observations illustrate two concerns arising from the same issue. People who openly abuse privileges legitimately owed to those who deserve them cause the degradation of the understanding and respect by others which should also be their due. A double transgression. Rip Snorter Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 Worse, degrades the social compact that powers fine nations.
Calico Jack Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 Even when I take my Grandpa somewhere and he tells me to use his handicap tag, I just drop him off as close to the door as I can get and then go park in the back. He is being driven around so he doesn’t need it and someone else could use that spot. I got legs that still work, I’ll walk from the back of the lot.
Rip Snorter Posted June 29, 2025 Posted June 29, 2025 If you are driving a Handicapped Person, it is perfectly proper to use a handicap space with their tag. They still have to get from here to there, sometimes with assistance.

Grandpa gets driven up to the front door, gets his door opened, his walker brought to him and then I walk him in unless he waves me off. It depends on the door but revolving doors + walker = he will never tell me he’s got it himself again hahah
Dantankerous Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 I hear you. Around my neck of the woods rudeness and selfish, entitled behavior is quite common. Bad driving is abundant in my area. Bad is not even the right word. Damn horrible might be more accurate. About everyone on the road is watching their phone and swerving everywhere. I'm the idiot driving a straight line
Rip Snorter Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 Just a few years ago, Colorado was amazing. So sad, a couple of my kids are stuck there, albeit in a wonderful house / location.

Dr. Zook Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 In my formative years In life, it was instilled one way or the other - to be respectful to others & your elders. To treat others as you would want to be treated. I've used the word Sir or Ma'am to people both half my age and twice my age both in public service and private life. Courtesy that was commonplace is now a rarity. Holding the door open or opening a car door is almost gone in society. Had to 'suggest' to some people to let a family use the elevator first because the couple had a special needs child in a wheelchair, bags and another toddler in tow. You would have thought I told them to go take the stairs instead of waiting for the next elevator (which showed up almost as soon as the doors closed on the family).

I just kind of looked at him. I'm white. I don't think he knew what the word meant. He just knew it was a nasty thing to call somebody.
MizPete Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 I guess I'm lucky. Around here, we hold doors open for each other & get a 'thank you' for doing so. My neighborhood is no longer mainly white. I have good neighbors. I am nearly always addressed as ma'am. Or Miss Bobbie, by those who know my given name (no, it's NOT just an alias). Oh yes, the syndrome abides in this city but I get to escape a lot of it, and grateful for it.
Blackwater 53393 Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 MOSTLY, out where we live, there’s a level of geniality that holds up well. Being polite and allowing others some simple latitude is the order of the day. There are exceptions of course, but it’s unusual and normally ignored. Once you get into the nearby city area, the change is remarkable and disgusting! I try really hard to distance myself from confrontation, but I don’t abide rudeness or stupidity very well. I have to go into the city for some of my medical care and for certain services that aren’t available close by. Then I have to put up with the cretins that seem to come from all directions, just to annoy me! At times, I marvel at the fact that I have not spent time in jail lately. Sometimes I wonder why I ever gave up smoking…

Blackwater 53393 Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 When I quit smoking some thirty years ago, I was an irascible, ill tempered, mean SOB for a good little while!! Schoolmarm and Hatfield threatened to buy a carton of cigarettes and hold a gun on me ‘til I smoked them all!! I’ve done very well to hold my temper for all these years, but there ARE times when I’ve bit my tongue or stuck my fist or my pistol back in my pocket that I sure could use a smoke!!! 😡😡

There is nothing funny about almost causing an accident because you were impatient and trying to be slick.

Pat Riot Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 I have been called “bigot” and “racist” for calling out idiots or irking an imbecilic driver in traffic. I always respond the same way. I yell “Thank you for showing me what you are” while flipping them off. Each time that has caused confusion then anger. Goal met!
Blackwater 53393 Posted July 1, 2025 Posted July 1, 2025 I don’t think I have ever been called a racist to my face! I can’t testify to what’s been said about me in my absence, but I have never let my personal feelings about race effect the way I treated anyone! I HAVE been called many unsavory names and vulgar expletives! I have usually replied with some smart a$$ed retort that would make the caller think that I took his/her comment as a compliment!! Hence, the American Select Society Helping Others Less Enlightened! 🤣
