Since We Have One, Why Not The Other? Your Most Underrated Gun

No, no YouTube video this time. What guns do you believe are seriously underrated?

I'll start. The Beretta PX4 Storm. A DA/SA polymer frame gun with a rotary barrel system that has great ergonomics, seeming less felt recoil, and good accuracy. I've never heard of anyone having any complaints about reliability, and mine has been dead on reliable for me.

Winchester Model 70 Compact in 7mm-08. I’ve taken elk, deer, antelope, buffalo with it and it puts them down with one shot. Very light recoil compared to my Ruger M77 in 338 Winchester Magnum and much lighter to carry too.

There are Langdon Tactical versions of this pistol that are supposed to be great. I have never shot one myself.

As far as my pick for underrated, I picked up a brand new CZ P-07 up a few years back for under $300. This is when the buzz was still hot on the CZ P10c being the new greatest thing/Glock killer (I didn't care for it).

The P-07 has never given me one bit of trouble and shoots very flat. it's a little bit thicker than a Glock 19 but the ergonomics are great.

Since when is a Model 19 underrated?  That's classic K Frame.  I mean sure, I miss my 586-1, but the 19 has been around slightly longer than me...

I'd have to say the Taurus 85. A lot of people don't like Taurus, but I've got 6 of these things and They do everything I'd want a snubbie to do.

Second place would be my Cimarron 1860 Richards by Armi San Marcos. You wouldn't expect it to, but if I do my part it'll put 5 shots into one ragged hole.

Guns mostly move in, Hotel California style, 98% of the time I pick performers.  Even low end good stuff occasionally, very occasionally leaves when I want to fund something new.  When cash flow permits I have even bought the same again.  All the guns I keep rock!

What? No seventh one? Or do you have a fancy Sunday-Go-To-Meeting pistol? 😃

I would love to have a Langdon Tactical PX4. And a 92, come to think of it.

I've handled the P-07 plenty, but never had the opportunity to shoot one. I did like the ergonomics though.

I no longer own one but I had 2 of them years ago, actually 3 of you count my daughter’s at the time. The SKS rifle.
So many people I knew looked down on them because they weren’t an AK 47 or an AR-15.
My SKS’ were very accurate for military arms. They were very reliable. They just weren’t sexy.

I cop a bit of ribbing shooting a INOX 92FS in IPSC from fellas....... But if the moon and planets align I can still mop up the young whipper snappers :)

I think of two, more if I had to but two for now...

Norinco SKS Paratrooper, Uses AK mags, has never jammed, failed to feed or misfired. Even after 1,000's of round fired, it's still pretty accurate and fun to shoot.

Smith & Wesson 4516-2. Semi-auto, .45 ACP, never jammed, failed to feed or misfired no matter what type ammo I've run thru it. 1,000's of round later, it's still amazingly accurate and fun to shoot.

The Tauri are my CCW pistols. If I were to have a BBQ gun, it would probably be either my 1911 or my Tombstone Special.

Mine pretty much do too, but do you have ones that aren't expected to, or are lesser known but should be better known?

If I had picked a rifle, the SKS would be it for sure. I still have one from the early 90's gun show. If I recall, it was $125 and it was new type 56 no cosmoline to clean up. I fooled around with it some and bubba'd it but ended up putting it back to the original configuration.

While it’s pretty well known, my Remmie 1100 shotgun might qualify. It’s an old, reliable every-man gun that’s exceptionally versatile and performs at or above others many times more expensive.

I’ve heard a lot of negatives about the 19. Of course I disagree!

I as well.  Kids today I suppose.  Just because it's not really designed for +P loads.  They didn't really have +P in '66.  .357 Magnum was, well, magnum.  Sure, it's not a .44 Magnum (that'll blow your head clean off) , but it does its job well.

The Hi Point Carbine, they are just good guns.

Only with the stock magazine.

If they would make them use Glock Magazines .

They would put all the other PCC makers out of the game lol

Also it’s not stainless, it’s old fashioned blah blah

Its my favorite SA/DA revolver!

Hi points HP45 carbine.

Cheap, rugged, accurate and lifetime warranty. Plus it's .45acp.

Bersa .380, bought it used, tried to find ammo it didn't like and never did. I used to have 1/2 boxes of all kind of oddball .380 left over, it shot them all.

Kel-tec p32, great reliable gun.

Hi point 9mm, I had a jar of odd ball 9mm on my loading table, different makers and bullet styles, took that to the range to test the gun. Fed and fired everything.         Found some .380 in there, fired and fed that also.

Winchester 1200, only real problem with that gun was that it tried to follow the beloved M12.

I've got two. Bought them when you could get them for $99.

I have owned two SKSs. First one for about 2 days - bought it with the intention of trading it off. And this was back when you could get them for $99.

The other one was part of a seven gun package deal. I think I owned it for about 4 years. Sold it for $300.

Never fired either one of them.

SKS will get a vote from me as well!  My first was a Polytec with a 20” barrel and wood furniture that had been painted black. I paid $120.00 for it and three detachable magazines.  The stock was ratted out and I replaced it with a Monte Carlo style composite stock and mounted an inexpensive scope on it.  It shot extremely well with almost ANY ammunition.

I sold it for about four times what I had in it and bought one of the D models that take AK47 magazines.  It came with the ugly assed laminated thumb hole stocks. It was absolutely miserable for me to shoot with that stock, so I replaced it with a collapsible AR15 style rear stock and an aluminum pickatinny fore end with high grip rubber cushion and added a green dot laser and a flashlight.

It closely matches my tacced out AK47 and I have a dozen steel 20 round Bulgarian magazines that fit either rifle along with three 75 round drum magazines.

The SKS is the more accurate of the two.

I also have another candidate! It’s the Taurus 450.  A five shot stainless revolver in .45 Colt.  It shoots to point of aim out to 25 yards with most factory ammunition and will fit nicely under a light jacket if I choose to carry concealed.  Mine is factory original with the Taurus grip and it’s comfortable and very stable shooting even the Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty rounds!

Never bought one, shoulda! I remember back in the 90s going into a LGS in Connecticut and they had em by the cases for $99 each and had a case of paper towels by them to wipe it the cosmoline off!! Also had wooden cases of ammo too at about $75 IIRC. I've got stock for one 😋

Right there with the SKS... MAK-90.  Get rid of that goofy "sporterized" stock and it makes a perfectly serviceable "AK".  Got mine in the mid 80's for $150.

A friend if mine got one of these when they were still in production. I'd love to have one, but they cost waaaaay too much these days.

A lot of people don't like Taurus

Admittedly, their early stuff was junk, and some folks can't let that go.  Their alliance with S&W in the 70s completely turned things around when it came to their revolvers.

Then in the 80's Taurus purchased the Beretta plant and tooling in Brazil and started cranking out the "92" style pistols.  I had two, a .380 and a PT92C in 9MM.  They only time I had a FTE/FTF in either was when I loaded some 90gr 9MM bullets with a light powder charge for "plinking" .  They went bang, there just wasn't enough oompf to cycle the slide.   I actually liked them better than the later Beretta 92s because they have the traditional thumb safety instead of that gimmicky de-cocker.   My only complaint was the grip was too fat, but so is the Beretta 92, of course.

PT-809 resides on the nightstand, hence the light.  PT-709 Slim is in the desk drawer beside me (and is the only striker-fired pistol I own).  Never had a FTE/FTF with either.

I also have Taurus PT145 Millenium Pro.  It was part of a series that Taurus recalled, but I kept mine. It’s a really good little gun. Holds ten rounds of .45 acp in the mag and one in the chamber and after a slight adjustment of the front sight, shoots to point of aim.

Most people don’t know that it’ll accept Para-Ordnance double stack magazines. I have plenty of those, so it fits right in with my other semiautomatic handguns!

My 809 is my safe.  It broke the right side of the slide release (Left thumb for us southpaws) and I keep loosing the round 'tuit to send it back to Taurus...

Have a Ruger P944.  Used to keep the 1911 in the nightstand, but thought I would get something a little "easier" after I got married so my wife could use it if she needed to.  This was back when I followed the commandment "thou shalt not own a centerfire handgun whose caliber does not start with a 4".  I have long since discovered the joys of 9mm.

In any event, you never hear anything about the P series, and especially not the P944.  But I do not ever recall a FTF or a jam.  It eats up any factory ammo or bulk reload ammo (gun show style) I have ever bought.  It is accurate and fun to shoot, and my wife with smaller hands and thinner wrists loves to shoot it too.

Only issue I have with it is finding mags for it.  Midway always seems to have a 20 round extended mag, but until laws change i am not going to be able to order that into this state.
