What’s your most overrated gun ??

Recommended Posts

I just found this channel a few months ago. I like that they are not all tactical type guns.

The most overrated gun in my opinion is the Glock 19. Great gun, I would buy one based on the hype, shoot it, tried to figure out what was so special and end up selling it. after a period of time, I would give another one a try. same thing.

I have ended up owning 4 over the years before deciding that they are just not for me.

I did not follow this back to YouTube, but I was tempted.

I was curious as to how many people in the comments were raising hell about those people. The Billy Ray Cyrus wannabe on the end, drinking a beer. While handling guns!!!???? OH MY GAWD!!!!!

Then the guy next to him with that sturmgewagh casually pointed at his brother all through the video.

It did not upset me, because I assumed the gun to be empty, and even if it wasn't I wasn't going to get shot. But YouTube commenters - I figure they all lost their minds.

The same way with Dad there. If he cleared that Python I missed it.

My first thought was the rifle pointed at the brother also. I am sure all guns were cleared and checked before the video, but there are always people who would watch this video and think it's ok to do that. I was taught at a very young age to never point a gun at anything you didn't want to kill.

I wouldn’t doubt it was done on purpose. The more comments you get on YouTube the more the algorithm seems to promote it . I’ve been watching their videos for a while now and they are usually pretty good. The old man seems to be quite knowledgeable.
It always cracks me up when people complain about guntubers pointing guns at the camera . When most of them probably don’t have or can afford a camera man .

I had a couple Glocks, a 19 and a 43 I couldn’t sell them fast enough. I hate the trigger and the 43 jammed up a lot. The 19 was more comfortable but I prefer the Canik 9mm and the CZ 9.  In MHO Glocks are way overrated!

I’m probably gonna tick a few people off, it’s okay though. I can handle it.

1. I agree with Bro #1 in the video. I think AR-15s are overrated. They’re too dang fiddly. I like my SFAR, but it’s based on an AR-15 and I find them to be awkward at best.

2. 1911s. I think 1911s are overrated. They’re too needy as compared to many striker fired guns. They need more cleaning, more lubing, more attention in general.

3. Colt DA revolvers. I think they’re overrated as well. You can only fire a few hundred rounds and then you’re at risk of the gun going out of time. I can strip down a Ruger or a Smith & Wesson and put it back together fairly easily on my bench with basic hand tools. I wouldn’t even bother trying with a Colt DA.

I also agree with Bro #2 about PPK pistols.

Okay, let the festivities begin… :D

I think it’s all about personal desires and expectations. Glocks and AR’s are probably both overrated just because of their popularity. I think there’s allot to those guns having no “soul” for many,  but for the ones who love them they see them as more of a tool . I agree with Pat about the Python being overrated, just about every competitive revolver shooter shoots a S&W . But the Python is beautiful. That being said I’ve always preferred S&W
A pump or semi shotgun is probably the most versatile in a shotgun but a well built SxS or O&U can make for a very satisfying ownership experience

My most overrated gun?  The AR... I guess.

The most overrated gun/brand?  Glock.  Mossberg s'not far behind.

I am going to get flamed for this but having used one I have to say the most over rated gun of all time was the M1 Garand.

Sorry Patton, you are wrong.

Today I definitely agree, collectors love it because of its place in history. I can see how it would have been an advantage for a GI over a K98 or a Arisaka in WW2  . My dad was in the army when they were switching from the Garand to the M14 . To this day he says he would take a Garand over a M14 . CMP has had a big hand in the Garands popularity

Military service is another reason for the popularity of the Garand and the AR . M-16 is the longest serving rifle so far .

My dad was a range instructor at Ft Bragg before he got out so he got to shoot the qualifying course quite often. He said the best score he ever shot was with a O3 A3 . And he shoots left handed . Worst scores were with the M14 . He felt the Garand was the best compromise

It seems almost anything the military or police use is highly rated , I guess it’s whatever the majority are familiar with

I agree with Charlie Harley on the Mini 14.

I agree about the Colt Python.

I'll add the Desert Eagle (any caliber) to the list.

And that is precisely why the favorite hand gun in my safe is a 6 inch Smith & Wesson 686.

Under barrel lug. Incredible balance. Beautiful lines. And a Smith & Wesson double action trigger pull.

Back in the 80’s-90’s I made quite a few Smythons or Smolt’s for people. Those people weren’t satisfied with the 586/686 . They must have had a need for the vent rib . Or just having something very few people have . One man’s trash is another one’s treasure

Colt barrel on S&W frame?

Well executed!

Two duds that my wife had over the years, hence I'd call them overrated:

S&W Model 317 Airlite w/2-inch barrel in .22LR...thing had such tight tolerances that .22 ammo would get it gummed up real quick such that the cylinder wouldn't turn after firing a cylinder or two, and the empties were very hard to eject.  Sold it to someone on GB who didn't mind the issues, and doesn't look like S&W makes the 2-inch model anymore.

Kahr PM9...reccomended 200-round break-in period, but even after that it still had at least one FTF or FTE per magazine.  Expensive gun for how poorly it worked, while the Kahr CW9 that I bought for nearly half the price worked flawlessly.  Still have the gun, debating on selling it or shipping it back to Kahr to see if they can make it work.

Sitting down?

UZI. Note - NOT the full auto UZI SMG.

I had an UZI Model B semi auto carbine back in the late 80s, bought it in California, (yes, you read that right), from an FFL who loved his UZI's. His always worked flawlessly, so I took the chance.

The only thing it had going for it was the serial number was almost all 7s, which is why I got a good price when I sold it. I left Cali in 1989, JUST ahead of  Roberti-Roos, back to Free AZ. And that was where I discovered this gun would not get through a full magazine without a jam. Didn't matter what mags, what ammo, that stupid NFA legal 3 piece bolt would NOT work right. When the AWB went into effect, I got a pretty penny for it, even disclosing the flaws.

Also, that 16 inch barrel looked STUPID on that gun.

honestly the only one that doesntperform as it was touted to is my 22 cal winchester M69 , it might be the scope that dates back to that era and it might be the idiot behind it in the end , but ive never hadd much luck with that one ,

I know this will be an unpopular opinion but I prefer Ruger revolvers over S&W. I'd take my GP100 over a 686. I like the trigger better and how I can almost stage it in DA.

I regret selling my 686. I have a Model 19 that sits around looking pretty though.

I recall people falling all over themselves to get Colt barrels installed on S&W frames back in the 80’s when I shot Bullseye matches.
2 guys, in particular, stood out for me because these smarmy guys were the gun club types that knew everything and wanted everyone to know it. They both got Colt Python barrels installed on their S&Ws. Pretty sure one had a model 14 Smith and the other a model 19, but I am not sure.
Anyway, the day came when they both were at our match with their new tack driving match winning “custom” revolvers. Neither one placed in the top 3 and it was obvious to me both their guns shot better before all the work was done to them.
Neither one liked me telling them so, either.

I learned that facts should never get in the way of desire when it comes to custom guns that day and the money that can be wasted on them. The Emperor’s New Clothes cones to mind.

Back when it was popular I worked for a company that was a Colt warranty station so we always had access to barrels . It was pretty popular for a while, most people I knew did it more for the looks than anything. Although everyone always claimed the Python bbls were more accurate I never saw any solid evidence of it . If you reamed the chamber throats on the cylinder and cut the forcing cone to 11 degrees just about any revolver will shoot pretty well, providing its in range, especially with lead bullets .
I’ve been told Colt won’t sell parts for the new Python. If that true I don’t think they will ever be popular with competitive target shooters. But maybe that’s not the market Colt is after.

I didn’t do those , any of the ones I did would have the picture taken by a 35mm or Polaroid instamatic . I just cherry picked those off the internet so people would know what I was talking about. It really was no big gunsmithing feat . Luckily the colt bbl had a larger threaded diameter so after you turned down and re threaded the bbl it was about the same as replacing a S&W bbl

Thank you.

I was wondering if they had the same thread, so you could just unscrew one and screw in the other. That would not really make sense, seeings as how Colt and Smith were, and still are, mortal enemies.

But the Colt being larger, turning it down and then rethreading it makes sense.

My brother had what he called a Cougar, a Colt barrel on a Ruger frame revolver. I never really paid much attention to it, so I don't remember which part was which - I wasn't into wheelguns at the time, stupid me.

I have several Smith revolvers and while they are my favorite, I have a Ruger SP101 that’s a great little gun. I also had a GP 100 for awhile but sold it to get money together for a Colt SAA but it was a great gun. I guess what I’m saying is I like both.

Best thing about my GP-100 is that if I run out of ammo I can bludgeon someone to death with it 🤠

I have a few Smiths also, not saying they are not great guns.

Most overrated gun?

Walther PPK. I've owned two. I really, really wanted to like them. I don't regret selling them though.

If I ever get the urge to get another, I'll try a Bersa Thunder 380 instead.
