I think grits are one of those dishes that you have to grow up eating.

You're supposed to eat it?!? 😀 I thought it was a filler for 45-70 Plainsman rounds. Why name a food Grits if you're supposed to eat it. Sounds rough on the teeth.🤣

NOPE!!  Instant or quick grits don’t have the consistency or flavor of real regularly prepared grits.  They are far more grainy and won’t take on as much flavor from other added ingredients like butter or bacon. Like Cypress Sun said, they’re far short of real grits and would likely disappoint a first time taster, leaving them to possibly get the wrong impression!

Actually, I didn’t encounter them until we moved back to Tennessee about the time I started junior high.  My first experience was at my aunt’s place. She salted, buttered, and peppered them before serving and I wasn’t impressed. 
 

She served them plain the next morning and I added some honey and butter. I was hooked!!

 

Later came cinnamon and then I tried ‘em with butter and bacon. Next was butter with sausage gravy! All of these were winners!

 

A trip to Louisiana put me onto shrimp and grits and I discovered a half dozen ways that this dish could be prepared!

 

I STILL don’t do the salt thing. If I add bacon and black pepper to buttered grits I get all the salt I want or need.  Part of that is probably the result of having intentionally reduced my use of salt at the table some forty years ago. I’ll add black pepper or cayenne or other herbs instead.  I like basil or oregano, for example.

They may like em better,😂🤣 Ive had them and I don’t think they’re that bad! 

Agreed they’re not as good as slow cooked grits. I’ve had em though and I put them over scrambled eggs and bacon

The instant will do in a pinch if there is nothing else available...but I damn sure am not going to pay restaurant prices for them. Besides that, what kind of restaurant in the South doesn't have real grits available for purchase?

My brother used to collect matchbox cars. And one day he got a grit spreader. Daddy showed us how it worked. I don't know whether the purpose of this thing is to drive over tar and drop rock into the hot tar to make macadam, or whether to drive over ice and drop salt to prevent skidding.

 

But Daddy told Mama to bring some grits, and he filled the truck up with grits and then drove it off across the table leaving that little line of white in between the tires.

 

 

Grits worked better for us than this guy's salt did for him.
