WiggleyDY Posted June 16 Posted June 16 What are the official rules for shooting Josey Wales? Dose it vary from club to club? Wiggley Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted June 16 Posted June 16 It varies from club to club. Some shoot five pistols. Some shoot four pistols and a shotgun. Usually, we get all the JW participants together before the match and get a consensus on the rules. I used to shoot from a rig that let me carry four pistols and stage the shotgun pistol or the shotgun. Most will stage the rifle pistols and the shotgun pistol or shotgun and shoot their regular pistols from leather. As I said, we all get together and decide amongst ourselves! Where you been, Pard!?!?? 3 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted June 16 Posted June 16 (edited) Sorry, Jack! I sold the portion of the rig that was actually a “Double Huckleberry” twin pistol rig. It was very similar to the one pictured here. Mine was adjusted so that the pistols were a little higher and closer together. The combination of this and my regular strong side rig let me draw one pistol straight draw from my regular rig and one crossdraw from the Huckleberry holster when I stood in a slightly exaggerated “Weaver” stance. I would swap sides to shoot the second pair of pistols and thus avoid any possible 170 degree violation. Edited June 16 by Blackwater 53393 2 Quote

I’ll have to do a little research and see who’s making a quality affordable double huckleberry rig for the future. Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted June 16 Posted June 16 Check out Old Trading Post. They have several that look great. This one is more like what I had. 1 1 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted June 16 Posted June 16 Our club, the Verdant Mountain Vigilantes, shoots a 2 day Josey wales match every fall. We use 4 pistols and a shotgun. Staging one pair of pistols for the rifle. You can shoot it regular if you choose using a rifle. If I ever gain another revolver, I'll see if I can't use it as a shotgun!! It's fun and the brass pickers have it easier! 1 Quote
irish ike, SASS #43615 Posted June 16 Posted June 16 We shoot 4 pistols. 2 of them staged. A single shot big bore rifle, and a shotgun. We call it real Josey. 1 Quote
The Rainmaker, SASS #11631 Posted June 16 Posted June 16 (edited) Found this in the Wire archives from Bingo Montana. I'm editing a little for our use next month. Josey Wales Category The Josey Wales category is not a SASS approved shooting category. The primary difference in Josey Wales is the use of 2 additional revolvers in place of the rifle. The rules described below are written with safety and smooth quick stage flow in mind. 1. All revolvers are loaded with 5 rounds each per SASS rules. 2. The revolvers being used for rifle targets (in place of the rifle) will be staged in the same manner as the rifle per stage instructions. The revolvers may be carried in a 4 holster rig to and from the firing line. Shooters may not draw revolvers from holsters to shoot the rifle targets. 3. If a shooter does not have a holster for each extra revolver, the extra revolvers will be carried with the muzzles up at least head high to the staging area for the rifle so as to not sweep anyone. The RO or other posse member may assist in carrying the shotgun to be staged. 4. The revolvers are shot duelist or gunfighter style only. No two handed shooting. 5. When the rounds required for the rifle targets is less than 10, the remaining rounds will be shot safely into the berm. Do not shoot at targets, target stands or props. Misses cannot be made up. The rounds shot into the berm are not counted as misses. 6. In the event that a stage description calls for loading rounds in the rifle on the clock; the Jose Wales Shooter must comply with the stage requirement to load, on the clock, as many rounds as the stage description requires. Engaging any targets as required and discharging all excess rounds into the berm safely, satisfying the "load on the clock" stage requirement. 7. The shotgun targets are not to be shot with a revolver unless otherwise directed by stage instructions. 8. All other SASS Rules Apply. Edited June 16 by The Rainmaker, SASS #11631 1 Quote

Any SASS legal shooting style, any time. Only two Josey categories, BP & Smokeless. I used to use 4 cap n ball pistols. Gunfighter with a pair of Walkers was a workout! 2 2 Quote

Abe E.S. Corpus SASS #87667 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Club rules vary. Ours are very flexible. Four revolvers with the option to use a shotgun or a fifth revolver on the shotgun targets. The fifth revolver is loaded with four rounds if there are four shotgun targets (that way the revolver should be empty at the end of the shotgun string. We allow revolvers to be shot in any style. We rigged a weighted bucket with three holsters to facilitate transportation of the “extra” revolvers from the LT and to the ULT. It’s a fun challenge. 3 1 Quote

Frontier Lone Rider Posted June 18 Posted June 18 Our club only shoots revolvers. So, one needs five revolvers. I use my regular holstered revolvers for the revolvers, two 7 1/2 inch revolvers for the rifle and a 7 1/2 inch for the shotgun. We have a JW Charity Match in November and donate the funds to the local community to assist with purchasing Christmas Gifts for the local families. 2 Quote
