Anyone missing a tooth North or South? I woke up in pain a few days ago and it increased over the weekend (which was a Long Weekend Holiday) to an unimaginable level....seriously it was hard to get through hour by hour. No emergency dentist available till Tuesday morning.

It was a cracked middle upper tooth molar and abscessed, it had already had root canal many years ago so couldn't be saved and was pulled.

I wasn't in much less pain last night.....hopefully it will start to ease. Still bleeding pretty badly, so going back in today to get checked.

This is the first tooth I'm missing, the gap feels absolutely horrible to my tongue....though you can't see the gap when I smile.

Did you get a replacement tooth or did you just leave a gap and learn to live with it?. The dentist talked about putting in an implant in about 3 months when it settles down.

Golly, back before modern dentistry.....people must have suffered horribly and had horrific drawn out and unbelievably painful deaths :(

Like Rye says get the implant and new tooth, you’ll be glad you did. I have a couple of them, I don’t chew ice or eat pop corn anymore.:D

Still got 'em all, (minus my upper wisdom teeth) but several are crowned.

Modern dentistry and anesthesia are the main reasons I am grateful to be living in this day and age.

Without pressure from the missing opposing tooth, the one opposite the gap will eventually loosen and cause problems.  Trust your doctor's recommendation.

For emergency, oil of clove helps till you can get to care, BTDT.  As to replacement, apparently it is what you can tolerate. Dad, a Doc, (with a superb dentist) had a slightly visible tooth gone and couldn't stand the appliance and showed a gap on occasion for years till he passed.

I’ve got 2 implants where the teeth had to be extracted. These were at two separate times and both times my dentist sent me to a specialist to extract the tooth and then went back to the same specialist to install the metal base into my jaw. Then back to my dentist for a mold and a temp tooth. Once the permanent tooth came back my dentist removed the temp and installed the permanent tooth over the metal implant. Get the implant!

Geez mate, that's horrible. Hope it heals up quick for ya Bear. I've got a crown on a lower molar. Oddly even with the root canal, it gets painful from ice or ice cream!

Thanks Pards, just back from the dentist he said its all going well and the blood clot is still in the socket and I have to be careful to not dislodge it because of something called 'dry socket' which he said I don't want (there's always kicker in the fine print ain't there!).

He said I need to wait 3 months for the bone to heal and then I can get a titanium screw and an implant.

Wow I don’t remember having to wait 3 months before getting the implant.  I don’t remember how long I had to wait. But seems like it was weeks and not months.

Definitely have to wait, he said something like the bone has to grow and fill in.

yes , i had one split - a filled one , yes i went through some pain , the gap is something that is strange yet somehow ive gotten used to it , but then i had one that was crooked as a kid and had braces to fix it so ts not that strange - just going back in time in a lot of ways i guess

I would get the replacement tooth.

I did since my age (81+) says I will loose more.

Since I'm a "Gagger" I was advised an upper plate might trouble me, so I opted to begin laying the foundation for a full set held in place by posts for the potential uppers.

I would make absolutely certain of the doctor's credentials and experience in implant dentistry.  I had a real nightmare experience with implants and will never do it again.

Haven't had one but have heard enough experiences like yours to pass on an implant!

Many (60) years ago I had a molar on my lower jaw extracted, due to a vertical fracture.  Then a couple years later. I had exactly the same thing occur on the other side.  In those days, nobody had ever heard of implants, so I learned to live with the two gaps and frequently crushed and bleeding sides of my tongue.  Today, after 50+ years, the entire row of teeth on both  sides of both gaps is strongly tilted 45 deg. into the gap.  It occurred gradually, changing my bite surfaces, causing extensive surface wear on all except my front incisors.

Two years ago, I needed a rear molar extracted.  I didn't hesitate 10 seconds on the implant decision.  Glad I went for it.  It is now my best chewing surface.

My advice-- go for it.  Get the implant.  It will save a lot of later problems and pain.  Implants are not the complicated deal, medically, that they were 10 years ago, but they do have some associated $ cost.

I had to wait 6 months on my last one.

Had lunch with a good pard today and he’s having his upper 4 front teeth removed next week. Severe bone loss and after the grafting is done it will be 3months minimum before they can do anything further, even then it could be longer depending on the bone growth and fill in. Not fun.

I was just talking to a mate on the phone, he told me his grandfather (now passed) went to Thailand and had all his remaining teeth pulled, had four screws put in top and bottom and whole set of teeth top and bottom held in by those screws......my mate said he came back looking like a horse as the teeth they put in were wayyyyy to big!!!

For those that had successful implants were they uppers or lowers?

Mine were both upper.

I had an upper molar that had a root canal and crown fail after about 25 years. I had it extracted, a bone graft and an implant. The implant failed after a few months (very painful). I had it extracted and another bone graft and implant done. It also failed after a few months, again very painful. I decided to live with it since the gap isn’t visible and clearly my mouth doesn’t like implants.

One is upper and one is lower, both on the left side and the back chewing teeth. They do not line up with each other as one is further back than the other.

This is a large part of why my implant failed.  When the tooth next to the now open area cracked and needed to be removed, I was asked if I wanted to have another implant.  I responded with a passionate NO!!!

40 years ago I was in a car wreck and as a result all of my lower front teeth were "mobile" for 40 years... and caused problems off and on.

Last year it got to the point something had to be done due to bone loss.  I had all of the lower front teeth removed and a bridge installed which is anchored to the canines on both sides.  The day of the extractions a temporary bridge was installed.  Three months later, after things had healed and "settled", they digitally imaged my mouth again and built the permanent bridge.

I don't eat corn on the cob or take a bite right out of an apple, but I haven't for 40 years.

I would suggest he ask about a bridge.

Looks like he’s going the bridge route.
