Its June,  but my mind is on October.  Who else here hunts with BP cartridge?

Do you post hunting videos on YouTube?

I have shot a deer with BP in my 45-70. Did the job handily. No vids for me.

I've been very successful with BP muzzleloader hunting for deer and elk.  Would not even think of hunting with BP pistol caliber cartridges, except in a survival mode.  Just my sense of a fair hunt and clean dispatch.  GJ

Same here.  Replica Sharps carbine.  Two point muley buck, range about 45 yards. Hit at the base of the neck almost exactly where I was aiming (3" forward of that point).  Jumped a bit and landed on his chin.

Took me longer to clean the gun than it did the deer... but he tasted great.

Shanley took the boys out dove hunting...used his sXs and bp shells.

The boys thought it funny...the other dove hunters, not so much😝

I have never attempted to hunt deer with BP Cartridges.  I have taken 2 whitetails with a .54 Hawken loaded with .45 caliber hollow points in sabots.

That said...

I shot full house .45 Colt BP loads in SASS competition for several years.  Those big bullets really made noise on steel.  I would not feel unsportsmanlike using a 250 grain .45 Colt bullet over a case full of 2F or 3F Black Powder or substitute out of a rifle at 50 to 75 yards.  With reasonable bullet placement,  the deer will die quickly and humanely.

Years ago I read somewhere that the .44/40 had killed more deer than any other cartridge.  Sorry, no reference or citation.  But I don't doubt it.

Exercize judgment, keep the distance reasonably short for the ballistics, recognize that you can't be a long range sniper.  Enjoy putting venison in the freezer within the cartridge limitations.

No hunting videos, but a few BP videos on YouTube:

Yeah.  I took my best pair of SAAs to a range and fired about fifty rounds loaded with FFFg.  Absolutely no wind, a rarity at this range, and I got all bruised and battered by the nasty looks I got.  ;D

Some old marketing adds claimed the BP 44/40 was great on Bear ????

38/55 on deer of 45 Colt with 777 works great!

Ruger Old Army and 777 with a ball worked on a doe  She ran less than 100 yards

.44-40 WCF  cartridge from a rifle will kill black bear just fine, so long as the marksman does his part.

I've taken several deer with my "buffalo" rifles in 45-70 and one in 50-70.  One season I was slipping along a ridge and paused behind a white oak tree where I had a good view of the draw below me.  Wasn't long beforerd of 6 or 8 deer came by in single file, probably about 50 yards away.  I picked my victom and shot. She flinched like bit by a horse fly.  All the deer stopped and turned in all directions looking for where the sound came from. Then turned around and slowly headed back from where they came. I waited a bit. There was a crust of new snow on the ground and tracking was easy. The doe was dead about 50 yards from where I ambushed her.  Another season,  I went out after lunch and slipped through the woods. There was an old tree top with a limb just the right hight to make a good seat. I sat on it and it broke with me. I fell backwards over the limb an main trunk of the top. Embarrassed, I grumbled as I got up on my knees.  There about 30 yards away were a doe and two fawns looking it me.  I suspect they had been bedded down there as I walked past. I picked the nearest one and plugged it with my 1869 Springfield in 50-70.  I could see the bullet hit like a bowling ball.  It only went a few steps.

I haven't yet. But I am considering going bunny busting with 12 ga Magtech shotshells loaded with the Holy Black, when my hunting partner gets healed up.

I was a Pistol hunter for years .

My longest harvest was with a Ruger Hunter 44 magnum Beasley model.

A hand rolled cartridge with no scope at 83 yards One Shot .

I used a Ruger Old Army with 35 g of Goex and a 200gr Conical for Black Powder Season.

Health Issues Provent Me From Hunting Anymore.
