Generally John Wayne played a cowboy. If he wasn't a cowboy, he was usually in the military.

And there were a few where he was neither one.

But he made - to the best of my recollection - two cop movies.

Brannigan, and McQ.

Which of those two did you prefer? Or did he make another cop movie that I can't remember?

I know he played law enforcement in several westerns but I'm talking about - I started to say modern times but those movies are both around 40 years old so I don't know if that would be considered modern.

There was another that I believe he was a cop in Hawaii. I don't remember the title and the DVDs are out of reach.

Big Jim McClain. Wasn't really a cop though. I think he was FBI. Him and Marshall Dillon were over there after communists.

I like that one myself. Although he was definitely miscast.

In the movie he was Trooper Thornton, a heavyweight.

In the short story they based the movie on Tiger Thorn was a bantamweight. And he still beat the hell out of the brother.

They should have cast Audie Murphy.

Brannigan,  because he used a Colt Diamondback .38 Special.  I owned one at one time.

Otherwise, he was better as Sgt. Striker in Sands of Iwo Jima.  That should have been his Academy Award.

So, many. it's hard to like them all. It was different, so it wasn't just another cookie cutter role.

ill agree , it was good , he showed he was versatile in his acting as did many of his others - cop movies , war movies , but i liked him best in his westerns , i will however watch any with him in it any day of the week ,
