Father Kit Cool Gun Garth Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 At this st(age) in my life I wish I had been introduced to the world of firearms earlier. I'm truly jealous, yet highly impressed with the knowledge base for which many of you exude this quality. From knowing firearm mechanics to reloading capabilities, all of which I lack. I've learned a lot from reading those threads you post, albeit with very limited understanding. They say it's never too late learn, but I firmly believe that programs that teach these fundamentals early (at the right age), would go a long way to ingrain firearm safety. https://greenlinearms.com/teaching-children-the-basics-of-gun-mechanics/ https://gundigest-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/gundigest.com/gear-ammo/reloading/the-importance-of-getting-youths-involved-with-reloading/amp?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQIUAKwASCAAgM%3D#amp_tf=From %1%24s&aoh=17474057762691&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fgundigest.com%2Fgear-ammo%2Freloading%2Fthe-importance-of-getting-youths-involved-with-reloading
Subdeacon Joe Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 Thanks. I was brought up around guns, we went out plinking a couple of times a month. Some of my earliest memories are of being prone on a canvas tarp, single shot .22 on a sandbag, and Dad next to me, coaching me and doing the actual aiming while letting me think I was doing it. I can still see him drawing what the sight picture should be in the dirt.

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 Garth, old son, I grew up with and have been immersed in, guns all my life. I pride myself on knowing as much as I do about them, but seldom a day passes when I don't learn something new and useful right here on this site. I've dropped almost of the magazines I used to subscribe to and the places I used to go to on the internet and some of the clubs I have belonger to, but SASS and the NRA are always there when I need them. Cherish the good you can find here almost instantly and avoid the crap you have shoved at you almost everywhere else. I dropped almost every publication I used to go to regularly and (aside from the link to TV I get from Amazon and seldom use) I don't have a TV contact. My life is calmer than it was before I started flushing these things.
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 Cool Gun, You are right.... there is an abundance of very knowledgeable folks on this forum that are always willing to help. There are a good handful of folks in which I read their post with great interest. To ALL of YOU who take the time sharing your knowledge, wisdom and experience....... THANK YOU! ..........Widder

Pat Riot Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 My Dad taught me very little about guns. I began learning about guns at the local library as a kid. I was a gun nut from the get go. In the Navy I was a Gunner’s Mate - Missile. All GMs have the same “A” school where we learn about gun and missile systems and, most pertinent to this thread, we learned about small arms (firearms). After that I went to “C” school where I was trained to work on and operate missile launchers but I volunteered to do work in the armory aboard ship and did so every chance I got. After the Navy I got into shooting Bullseye matches then tactical shooting and also target shooting. This led to learning about my guns and I started buying books on gunsmithing and working on my own guns. And again I would go to the library to find books on guns and gunsmithing. I used to get several gun magazines a month. I still get a couple of magazines, but the internet is my gun magazine now. I have learned a great deal in my internet searches and my time in forums. One does have to be careful with info from the internet. Always double and triple check information. No offense to anyone here but if I learn something anywhere on the internet, including here, I always double and triple check info, especially on reloading and firearms mods. Did I mention the library? You would be surprised how much info you can find there b
Subdeacon Joe Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 To me, the best general overviews of firearm history and function can be found in the front matter of the Lyman and Sierra reloading handbooks.
Alpo Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 We didn't have guns. The summer my older brother was 14 my mother's father died. And somehow my older brother ended up with Grandpa's 410 Iver Johnson Champion. I am pretty sure that that gun helped to feed the family during the depression. I'm also pretty sure that they did not do things sportingly. Shoot the birds on the ground, not in the air. Shoot the birds out of season. Food on the table is more important than sportsmanship. Anyway. That summer he got that 410. For Christmas he got a double barrel 12 gauge. And that was the guns in our family. A school friend of mine - Junior Assistant Scoutmaster - bought a Mossberg 320B single shot 22 from Boy Scout camp. Sold it to my older brother. Now he had three. But he decided he did not like it, and sold it to my father who gave it to my younger brother for his 15th birthday. Finally - FINALLY - for my 18th birthday I was given a 22 rifle. My first gun. Still got it. The first of a few. But everything I know about guns I had to learn on my own.
