Father Kit Cool Gun Garth Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Considering adding a knife to my SASS outfit. Haven't spent much time looking at actual knives, except at the local flea market; however, they did not have one that appealed to me. I have done some research online, but again, nothing that made my heart pound. Closest I've come was this one online. Would like it to be a period replica. What do you carry and where was it obtained.? Hopefully your suggestions will make my heart skip a beat! Quote
Alpo Posted May 9 Posted May 9 You want something period correct? https://www.iverybers.com/product/old-hickory-7-in-straight-edge-butcher-knife/?msclkid=c81df1c9c0321bb04b5d99d7a3435d0f $6 at this place. You got to make a sheath but, I'm sure you can get a sheath for less than the $93 extra that the canoe knife would cost you. 3 4 Quote
Rip Snorter Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Check Etsy - I have a couple and might part with one if you don't find what you want. 1 Quote

I could then use the extra savings to have my local leather guy make me one. Quote
Father Kit Cool Gun Garth Posted May 9 Author Posted May 9 Can you show me what you use and what do I look for to make sure it has the appearance of an Old West period knife? For example would this one I found on (as @Rip Snorter suggested) be an option? Quote
Black Angus McPherson Posted May 9 Posted May 9 I think any of the above would look fine. I'd find it kind of hard to spend $100 on a knife just to hang it on my belt, tho. BTW, I have a couple "Old Hickory"s in the knife block. Angus 1 Quote
Rip Snorter Posted May 9 Posted May 9 To me, the issues are that the knife is made with materials available in the timeframe and with design features common at the time and before. Both of these leave a great deal of open territory. Anything from Spanish daggers to Bowies, to butcher's knives will work, if to your taste. I haven't competed in years, so can't tell you what is currently popular. I began collecting knives as a boy, many decades before SASS even existed, so I had a variety to choose from and swapped according to mood and the gun leather I was carrying. 1 Quote
Crazy Gun Barney, SASS #2428 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Look in the Bud K catalog. A lot of pure crap in there, but they have some bowie type knives that look period. Some of these come with really not period looking sheaths but some arent too bad. You can get a cheap knife that will look just fine as part of the outfit. 1 Quote
Crazy Gun Barney, SASS #2428 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 These look good to me, but the sheath isn't real period. 1 Quote
Rip Snorter Posted May 9 Posted May 9 A quick trip to Tandy Leather - anyone can make a sheath! You are not gonna be betting your survival on the knife, basically a prop. All it has to do is look good in SASS. If you need more - you have to pay more. SMKW is another possible source site. 1 Quote
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 I have a similar knife to this one, except the grip is blackened, that rides in a boot sheath. It's made by Frost Cutlery with the brand name Chipaway. It's nothing great, but it serves the purpose. And I have one something like this one that sometimes rides on my belt. Frost makes cheap knives, but just as an accoutrement they're fine. As for making a sheath, yes, it's about as easy as any leather project you can do. 1 Quote
irish ike, SASS #43615 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 The first knife you show is period correct. It was offered by many of the trade companies. It was easy to make and durable, Think weight, bowie knives aren't light. The fancy pearl grips and finely made blades an average cowboy wouldn't wear or afford. My $5 qorth. 1 Quote

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 I have two Bavarian style belt knives, one is a 2 1/2" stag handled knife that my grandfather brought back from Switzerland in 1893. The blade was broken so I reshaped it into a 2 1/4" neck knife. The sheath didn't survive. The second is a 4"Linder that I bought about 40 years ago. I sewed the sheath into a beaded buckskin outer shell and it now rides on my shooting bag. I also have a Linder 8"'Bowie style that has a buckskin sheath decorated with conchos, brass beads and tacks, horn pipes, tin cones, and horse hair. All three of these have genuine stag handles or scales in a Dixie Gun Works beaded sheath. My "bag knife" is a Green River 5 1/2" butcher knife with black walnut checkered scales. 1 Quote
Injun Ryder, SASS #36201L Posted May 10 Posted May 10 Had this one made for me a number of years ago. Don't carry it anymore - too big! 1 Quote
Boggus Deal #64218 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 I quit carrying one because I didn’t need it for the category and it was extra weight in the way to haul around while shooting. Quote

Ann & I recently checked on renewing our membership to the Eustis Gun Club and found out that we could not automatically get renewed as prior members, but had to go through a training class first. Has to be on a particular Sunday of the month if I recall. Will be attempting to renew this summer so I can get back into CAS. 1 1 Quote
