Johnny Buck Posted April 7 Posted April 7 (edited) I just received my Birdseye maple box from Yul Lose. All I can say is "AMAZING." The new Nighthawk Custom 38 Super fits perfectly. He said he used a new dovetail joint and she is never coming apart. Perfect addition to my nightstand. JB Edited April 7 by Lawdog Dago Dom personal info removed 13 4 Quote

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted April 8 Posted April 8 That is not a typical dovetail. Remarkable! 1 Quote

John Kloehr Posted April 8 Posted April 8 I was looking at that box, had no particular specific use but very nice box. Glad you have a specific purpose and will enjoy it. Quote

Yul Lose Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Here are a couple of different dovetail key joints done on a scrap of wood. The first one with the redheart dovetail key is pretty easy to make on the router table with a fixture that I built. The second one is a maple tapered dovetail key and I used a jig from Infinity Cutting Tools to cut the tapered dovetails and dovetail keys. Notice in the still shots the difference in the dovetail slots and the key shape. I’ve built hundreds of boxes using the straight dovetail key method but since I got this Infinity jig it’s by far my favorite, the reason being that occasionally with the straight style of dovetail key the key sometimes would not seat on one end or the other and there would be an unsightly glue gap usually on the front face of a box. The chances of that happening with the tapered dovetail key are far less likely. IMG_5565.mov IMG_5567.mov 2 2 Quote
