Uriah, SASS # 53822 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Let me get this straight. The movie, “Winchester 73” was an actual 1/1000 gun? Add not some prop gun? Uriah 1 Quote
Dapper Dave Posted March 29 Posted March 29 I am not a collector, but a user, which would lead me to ask, as a movie gun, is it neutered or is it completely shootable? I see damage to the muzzle - was it ever properly cleaned after using all those black powder blanks, or are the insides destroyed, bore pitted, etc.? I agree, it's fantastic, such a rare firearm...can I put a few rounds through it, or is it just a cool walllhanger? Quote
High Spade Mikey Wilson Posted March 29 Posted March 29 My favorite western movie. That's where I got my alias from 3 Quote
Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Learned how to load a Winchester watching Jimmy do it when I was a kid. Any film with Tony Curtis and Rock Hudson in it had to be great. 😀 Quote
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 As I recall, that rifle got thrown around a lot in the movie. I wonder if they had a stunt rifle double. 1 Quote
Zach Taylor,SASS#14359 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Three rifles were made for the movie, they were not 1 of 1000, in fact 2 were 38 40 , one turned up for sale a number of years ago, but the others are missing. Quote

The guns I shoot look like they were stunt doubles for the stunt doubles....but they work.....well right now they do 😎 Kajun 1 4 Quote
Smokin Gator SASS #29736 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 In True West, I believe, there was an article talking about the making of the movie. Previously the 1 of 1000 and 1 of 100 rifles were not a huge deal to collectors. After the movie came out they became a lot more popular. 1 Quote
T.K. Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Awesome Movie. I just wish they would have spent the extra $$$ and shot it in color! Quote
watab kid Posted March 30 Posted March 30 i loved the movie and enjoy him - i hate his daughter and dislike his son , so much in life is about the choices we make , hanoi jane made hers , im not sure why we didnt deport her - maybe we should , im sure hanoi would take her 2 Quote
Wild Willi Posted March 30 Posted March 30 You should not shoot a collectible firearm but it belongs to you and you can do whatever you want but shooting could reduce the value but it’s real value is only what someone will pay for it Quote

Boils down to what it's worth. Back in the early 2000's I wanted a Winchester 94 in 38-55. Couldn't find one. At a local gun auction in 2003 a 1979 Winchester 94 Legionary Frontiersman commemorative was listed new in box. I did some research and found it sold for around $500 when it came out, and was about the same value 24 years later. I won the rifle for $525 and I still shoot it yet today. It's very accurate and I won a couple of big bore rifle shoots with it years ago. I never regretted shooting it. Quote

I also have one these some of these have a problem the forends they were salt cured wood and it eats the German silver forend tip. These are not really the kind of collectors guns I was referring too. Those were made as collectors guns but they never seem to bring much money I also have several NRA winchesters again not big value in them plus you need the box and the sleeve 2 Quote

Not sure what collectors you know but Bill Koch had 2 1873’s and 1 1876! I saw them back in 2018 (I think) at an exhibition in WPB FL, soon after he had Billy the Kid’s tintype. He also had Volcanic rifles and pistols, Henrys, and a Colt 1873, serial number 1, and my favorite, Frank James’ 1875 Remington. I was very impressed with the 1873s!! Quote

My reference was just that prior to the release of the movie they weren't considered as so highly desirable. Not that some collectors didn't look for them but interest dramatically increased after the movie. Quote

Just wanted to inform everyone of a personally known collector. Perhaps the very existence wasn’t known but to only a few prior to the movie. I was surprised that they didn’t use a 92 “Henry” and instead used a blackened 1873?!? If I my post was upsetting it was not my intention, my apologies if it was. Quote
