Pat Riot Posted March 23 Posted March 23 My son-in-law sent this to me. Why Chicagoans do not put ketchup on hotdogs. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DGg55MWCCnw/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D 2 2 2 Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted March 23 Posted March 23 So instead of catsup to cover the taste of rancid meat, Chicagoans let the meat spoil more and cover it up with a pungent yellow mustard, alien green relish, onions, pickles, peppers, celery salt, and tomatoes. Makes sense to me! 4 2 5 Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted March 23 Posted March 23 (edited) The ONLY THING worth more than two dead flies to come out of Chicago is the Chicago Dog!! Best with spicy brown mustard!! Ketchup is for fries or onion rings!! Frankly, (see what I did there?) if you’re eating most hotdogs, you don’t much care what it’s made of or the quality anyway!! 🙄 🤣 Edited March 23 by Blackwater 53393 5 2 Quote

Doc Shapiro Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Ketchup is a vile, disgusting, overly sweet concoction. Did I mention that I can't stand the stuff? 1 4 Quote

Trailrider #896 Posted March 23 Posted March 23 What are many Chicago hot dogs made of? Beef, pork,...horsemeat? IIRC, a while back there was some problem with hamburgers being made with horse meat. It wasn't what they were made of, but the fact they were being advertised as beef! Anyway, regardless of the reason, custom dictates mustard on hotdogs, katsup on fries! That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! And I was from Chicago a long time ago. 1 1 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Had one of those on more than one occasion!! Wasn’t bad! They also would put chili and cheese on the same dog and they called it a “garbage dog”! Wasn’t bad. A whole meal on a bun! Sold ‘em in foot long too!! 🤪 1 Quote

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted March 23 Posted March 23 It’s not much different from why much of the tropical regions heavily spice their food. Quote

TN Mongo, SASS #61450 Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Having spent my college years in Chicago, I rather like a Chicago dog. My favorite place included a spear of a kosher dill pickle and handful of fries wrapped up in aluminum foil (no you didn't eat the fries on the dog). True, ketchup historically was invented to cover the taste of rancid meat, but applying it to a hotdog, is a matter of personal preference. Plain yellow mustard, IMHO, is disgusting. A proper spicy brown mustard is the only way to go. I'm a mustard only guy when my dog is topped with sauerkraut and onions, but I will dabble with ketchup when other topping are involved. I'm much more picky about the brand of hotdog I buy. Many taste like baloney in tube form. Nathan's and Hebrew National are the only big brands I will eat and, surprisingly, Costco's Kirkland brand, are delicious. As a kid, growing up in Wisconsin, you could face capital punishment for putting ketchup on a bratwurst. My "Southern Girl" wife put ketchup on a brat in front of my parents and I almost had to break up our blossoming relationship. 1 3 Quote
Cypress Sun Posted March 23 Posted March 23 (edited) Everyone knows....a hotdog needs to have Miracle Whip on it w/cheese. Okay, I'm kidding (or not)....hot dogs need chili to make them truly delicious. Edited March 23 by Cypress Sun 6 Quote

I won’t buy Heinz because of Kerry’s wife ( I know they sold it but still) I guess I’ll see you in court and whomever serves those papers better be careful coming round here! It’s Delmonte and now I’m down to one bottle! 😳😂 1 2 Quote

I have tried every other ketchup available and to me the rest just ain’t right. There was a ketchup sold by Smart & Final under their brand name that was actually pretty good, but they screwed it up…probably put DelMonte in their bottles. 1 1 Quote

A little sharper than French’s and not as watery. 1 Quote
