I got an email from Menards this morning. They got this gizmo on sale they call a cup crate.

This itty bitty plastic milk crate looking thing clips on to the side of your soup bowl, and you can put your soda crackers in it. Or eclipseCLIPS on to the side of your milk glass so you can put your chocolate chip cookies in it.

And I thought that was kind of cute, in a nerdy sort of way. And it's on sale for $2. And I thought about that and figured that was probably what it ought to go for - a dollar or two.

But the more I thought about it the more I wondered if it was a real thing. And I looked it up.

It's real. And MSRP is $15.

I would have had to think about it for a while before spending $2 on it. $15??

Yowzer.

I'll bet that they make a ton of money from this ingenious device from the same discerning shoppers that bought pet rocks.

When pet rocks were the craze a man in San Bernardino opened a grave yard for pet rocks in his back yard.

One year for Christmas I got a very heavy present. When I opened it it was a brick.

Not your normal red clay brick with three holes in it. A concrete brick. But it was still 8 inches by 4 inches by 2 inches.

And on it my little brother had written with a magic marker:

PET BRICK

I guess he didn't have any money that year for presents.

It's the thought that counts!

Did he have formal interment ceremonies?

I have no idea.  I thought it was stupid then and still, do but I don't let anyone tell me how to spend my money and I don't tell anyone how to spend theirs.....no matter what I feel about their sanity.  :P

Back in 19 and 68, back when dirt was young and so was I ... back when I was young and skinny ...

(Yeah, yeah, get to the point!)

(harrumph)

My seventh grade teacher told us of an enterprising huckster who made a surprising amount of money.

He ran an ad that said "SURE FIRE WAY TO HOLD DOWN YOUR BILLS EVERY MONTH, SEND ONE DOLLAR, NO STAMPS."

The luckless souls who answered the ad received this Sure Fire Method.

A hand written note that said, and I quote:

"Place bills on table.

"Place brick on bills.

"Bills are now held down."

(Sorry ... that was the stray memory that came floatin' up when Alpo mentioned The Pet Brick!)

I thought those people would get instructions to run an ad that said: "SURE FIRE WAY TO HOLD DOWN YOUR BILLS EVERY MONTH, SEND ONE DOLLAR, NO STAMPS.""

That would have been false advertising - it was increasing income but not holding down bills - and would be mail fraud.

There was a  similar story,  an ad in the back of a tabloid or magazine,  "For information send $5 and stamped,  self addressed envelope to P.O Box ### "  The guy sent people who responded a page from a dictionary.  Someone filed a  complaint alleging mail fraud.  He beat it by pointing out that the information type wasn't specified and that the pages he sent did contain information.

Back in the early sixties, if memory serves me correctly, a student from Yale university placed an ad in newspapers in all of the major cities. It said, simply, “Send me a dollar!” with an address included.

He allegedly received hundreds of dollars.

My favorite along these lines but a bit different is a guy who bought a bunch of cheap umbrellas and put a label on each something like:

If found, please feel free to keep this umbrella and send $5 to me at [address].

Then he left them on subways. He got money for a few of them, some time later some additional money. Every now and then, another $5. Every time someone lost one of those umbrellas on the subway, there was a chance someone who found it would send him $5.
