Johnny Knight Posted March 16, 2025 Posted March 16, 2025 HI all, Recently picked up an H&R 1871 Target in 38-55 to try my hand at some plainsman side matches. In looking back through some other threads, I saw that some folks recommended a 1901 Krag site as a replacement for the Williams peep sight. As I understand it, some modifications are required, but I couldn't find what those modifications were, so I thought I would ask. It also appears the Wesson and Harrington long range site that buffalo arms carries has worked well for folks. Any thoughts of the pros/cons of one over the other, since it appears the Krag might be a bit less expensive, but the Wesson and Harrington is a drop in fit? Thanks in advance, Johnny p.s loaded up some .379 ballard 240 gn from missouri bullet company behind 2.8 cc dipper of schuetzen 2f (about 43 gn by weight) to see what it will do
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted March 16, 2025 Posted March 16, 2025 I mounted a Wesson and Herrington sight on my H&R 1871 Target rifle. On my rifle it was a drop-in fit. Folded down the buckhorn sight would work for the Plainsman. You can reduce your powder charge for the Plainsman.
