S&W 500 Magnum: Whew...a little exuberant

3 ft.......... WOW, I really like that.

And you look like a pretty big feller but that recoil surely got your attention.

I wouldn't shoot a 700 grainer because those 450 grainers was about all I wanted to deal with.

Free to any .500 S&W shooter in my area if you are going to (Arizona, Cowtown or ACSA at Ben Avery).

I have three, JHP rounds that look like they are either factory or new loaded from components.

I'll pull them & you can have them.

Not worth shipping them.

I ended up with them & have no use (or future use) for them.

UNLESS you know of some old odd caliber to form them into , lol

Sheesshhhh!  Not sure... but I believe my entire pistol, cartridges and all... barely weighs 700 grains total.

Lightest pistol ever @ .10 lbs.:P

My Magnum Research BFR in .45-70 Gov't is a beast to shoot!

(not my pic)

001_bfr3in_7-5_2016_right_01s.jpg.23eb8d4c9aa87b88f4591b97da879061.jpg

About ten years ago there was one of those BFR 45-70’s at my local gun store. It was used. I stopped to look at it. I was trying to determine if it was actually real because “Who in the h*** would be crazy enough to shoot that, let alone make one?”

I do not recall the price.
The store owner came over and said “It’s basically brand new. It comes with 39 rounds of ammunition.  Guy bought it brand new and bought 40 rounds of ammo. Fired it once and here it is…you want to hold it?”

”Awe H*** No! No way. That little devil on my shoulder needs no encouragement. Thank you, I’ll pass.”

Over a 3 month period the price came down each month. It came down enough that I thought “I could probably make some wimp loads…”

The next time I was in the store (I went there often because they had a nice shooting range) the BFR was gone. Someone had bought it.

About 2 weeks later the store had another 45-70 BFR that oddly enough looked just like the one they had before AND at the same price.

The clerk said “Yeah, it came back. The guy decided he really didn’t need it. He listed it at the same price (consignment) that he bought it for…AND this one comes with 38 rounds of ammo” then he grinned and winked.

Funny story.

My brother has one of the 45-70 BFRs. He loaded up some lighter, but still potent hand loads to try out in the revolver. The first 2 or 3 went BANG as expected, the next didn't...or so he thought. He had cocked it to fire the next round when something told him to stop and check the barrel for a squib lodged in the barrel. Sure enough, there was a bullet lodged in the barrel although it didn't really sound like a primer only ignition.

When he told me the story, he said "It probably wouldn't have been good on the hands if I'd have fired the next shot."

I replied "Yeah, it would have ruined your sex life for sure." He didn't think it was funny for some reason.

Hell No!

My days of heavy recoil are done. Period!

A while back in another thread @Widder, SASS #59054 made about hot .45 Colt loads I almost bit and got to work on some Ruger Only loads for my original 7.5” Vaquero. The little angel won. ;)

My wrists are screwed up enough as it is. I don’t need any more stout handgun shooting.
I am not even real keen on stout rifle loads any longer.

My 500JRH BFR Bisley is all I want to handle. After seeing the video of 3 Foot shooting his S&W500 mag, no thankeesir!

This thread has generated some good stuff and some good stories.  Thanks everyone.

I still enjoy my .22's, rifles and pistols.   And for now, I'm waiting for my 460 brass to arrive, work

up a few 'thunder boomers', and carve a few new ditches into the back hillside.

Of course, the glove and wrist wrap will be dress code for the day...... :)

I also enjoy my 22s at the range every week.
This week is 44 day... my Redhawk, Alaskan and a virgin Smith 629.
I'm curious to see if the Smith smacks my knuckles like the Redhawk does (and Alaskan does not).

44 is all I want to tolerate for recoil..

A lot of whether it smacks your knuckles has to do with the grips. S&W factory grips do not fit my meathooks. I have only one N Frame Smith, and it wears Herrett Shooting Star grips. They feel like they were custom made for me.

Yep.
My Alaskan is my most kind shooter regarding knuckle slaps.
My Redhawk is the worst.

I have a set of Hogue for the Redhawk and SP101 357 that are both knuckle slappers.
Free time being none, they remain uninstalled for now.

It is easier, cheaper and more fun to shoot a bucket of 22s every week....

NICE..... that 629.

I almost picked up the 629 'competition' I think its called..... or competitor.

But couldn't decide if I wanted it or the Stealth Hunter model instead.

Sooooo, I bought an H&K .45.

I already got the Anaconda and basically don't shoot the .44 as much as other revolvers.

I see that logic. I use similar logic all the time. It works!

How PR.

Its kinda like that rich man who had 3 girl friends and couldn't decide which one to marry.

Girl friend #1 was beautiful, as were all of them.  But she was well educated and had a good,

secure job.  Her dad owned his own diamond mine down in Africa.  She even knew how

to drive a straight shift pick up truck.

Girl friend #2 was might fine and had one of them 'take a 2nd look' type walks as she strolled

thru the shopping malls.   PLUS, she was talented in music of all kinds and a great dancer.

She had inherited a little money which she turned into a successful business..... AND had

spent a good amount of her money on buying the rich man some fine golf clubs and

membership in his favorite golfing spot.  She knew how to please him.

Girls friend #3 had eyes of an Angel.  Her smile could melt any mans heart.   She had a sweet

Southern accent that enhanced her Southern charm.  She knew the difference between the

sound of a whippoorwill, bull frog or cricket on a warm summer night.

She was also kinda rich compared to most folks and drove one of them Audi sports cars.

But also loved sitting on the river bank fishing and sipping on a cold drink while her long

hair flew in the breeze.

Guess which one he married?

The one with the biggest hooters.

Welcome back, EDG!!!  Long time no see.  Hope all is well with you and yours.

Been busy with the store, growing kids, the farm and my mother now needs 24 hr care so my free time has been pretty precious. We just came back from eot and it reminded me of how much I like to shoot.   I only shot five matches last year.  This year I'm going to try to get to more.
