Ruger 10/22 Magazine Fixes—-UPDATED

My son gave me a Ruger 10/22 75th anniversary edition rifle as a gift. We took it out to the range on Monday and the magazine that it came with and 2 others all had loading and feeding issues. I called Ruger and they said to send them in for repair. I guess I could but would rather not do it if there is an easy fix. These are the ones with the red plastic rotary cartridge holder inside. Any help would be appreciated. I had an old magazine and it loaded and fed flawlessly.

UPDATE: Well I disassembled the magazines and sure enough the spring tension was non existent on one and the other it wasn’t 2 turns, if that, so I wound the spring tension on both of them up and put them back together and they feed flawlessly. Mrs. Lose had to leave on an errand so I fired off both magazines in the back yard with no issues. Thanks for all of the help and suggestions.

Didn't know Ruger would fix their mags, will have to remember that.

When I have a mag fail, I take it home, give it a full cleaning.  Next time I go to the range, if it still gives me issues, it usually ends up being a target.  More fun than just tossing them.

I use a paint pen to number all my mags, that way it is easy to identify any that have issues.  Life is too short to have to deal with magazines that wont feed reliably.

My buddy has a fix for those pesky magazines. Darned if remember but it was something l8ke this.

Nah.  Ruger will fix 'em for free.  A little postage and save yourself the aggravation.

I'll look at sending mine in. Every single 10 round magazine I have (I think 7?) has feed problems. Not a single 15 round magazine (I think 6) has any problem at all. I have not fully tested my second rifle, but for what I did try, both of my 10.22s seem to have the same magazine preference.

But I do not want to send in the rifles as they are otherwise flawless.

@Yul Lose a few years ago I bought a 10/22 rebuild tool for setting the spring up to factory spec. It works.
I bought several mags for my grandson and they had issues.
All I did was use my till to properly set the springs and they have worked great ever since

Cool, thanks. You’d think with this being a special edition rifle that Rugers quality control would be a little bit better, I guess not.

I think they just grab mags out of a bin and put them in the rifle box.
The sad thing is Ruger has known about their magazine issues for a few years, yet they still let a few out that aren’t timed right with the spiral springs.
I think they have one lazy sonofa…in their magazine assembly area that just keeps on doing crappy work.

My friend did this fix on my Ruger magazine in about 5 minutes. Oddly enough I have another 25 rounder, a PRO MAG and it works fine.Never had a problem with that one.

Pro Mags make excellent targets when they malfunction. ;)

Hmmm….never had a problem with the two I have and I’ve shot hundreds of rounds through them. 🙄

I haven’t really had any

problems with my Ruger mags…at least in my 10-22’s…but I have a Ruger American 22 that I have just 3 or 4 mags that work well in. Others will work…but kind of catch when you are trying to chamber a round. The 3or 4 mags feed smoothly.

It's been a few years since I've messed with them but I've had problems with some factory rotary magazines.  The cure was more spring tension which is easy to do without any special tools.  Just an Allen wrench.

I've got a 10/22 and a Charger pistol, started having feed issues with both using bx-15 and bx -25 mags. Oddly enough, if you held the mag like a vertical grip, it worked fine.

After winding these springs a couple of times and having trouble with these old fingers I took a spanner tool that I used to use for conversion cylinder firing pins and deepened the slot. I then drilled 2 shallow 1/16” holes in the winding nut on the magazines. Now I have a winding tool for future Ruger 10/22 mag springs. Works pretty slick and the magazines feed flawlessly too. Probably never have to use it again but I thought I’d share.

I bought 5 double mags from TandemKross several years ago.  They are easier to insert and remove because the second mag works like a handle.

All the spring in the BX-10 magazine needs is  1 1/3 turns of tension to work flawlessly. This also makes them a lot easier to load.

Below is a video showing how to properly tension the Mag spring.

TandemKross also makes a tool to make tensioning the Mag nut easier.

One of the reasons I bought the tool I did was because when I tried tensioning the spring and then reassembling on several 10/22 mags I had my front garage door open. The neighbors and passers-by on that first sunny day in months got to hear lots of colorful language. I was pretty angry with that “creative” design as I tried reassembling those mags.
