Crooked River Bob, SASS#26199 Posted March 12 Posted March 12 I would like to know if the basepin for an original Colt SAA with the blackpowder frame will interchange with the basepin on a Cimarron/Uberti Model P with the "Old Style" (blackpowder) frame. I have a Cimarron 7th Cavalry Model P in the "Original Finish." It's a dandy revolver, nicely put together, and very smooth right out of the box. They did a good job with the finish, too... It really looks like a 150 year old veteran. Like the original Colts, it has a removable cylinder bushing, solid, hammer-mounted firing pin, and "four clicks." This particular one also has the correct military markings, including the Ainsworth initials on the left grip panel. The bottom strap has 7th Cavalry Co. I stamped in (I think that was Keogh's company). Really, the only thing I don't like about this revolver is the goofball "safety feature," which consists of a too-long, two-position basepin. When pushed in all the way to the collar, it protrudes out the back far enough to block the hammer. They call that a safety. The basepin has two rings turned in it to engage the retention screw in the front of the frame. The idea is that you loosen the screw, pull the basepin slightly forward, and then retighten the screw to engage the innermost ring on the basepin to get the revolver in shooting mode. Getting the amount of protrusion right, so the screw engages properly, is a delicate operation. With a caliper, I've determined that with the basepin secured in firing position, 0.162" of the basepin shaft is exposed between the collar and the front of the frame. Logically, I should be able to just grind off 0.162" from the distal end of the basepin and be good to go... Just shove the basepin in all the way to the collar and tighten the screw, with no delicate fiddling around to get it positioned properly. However, I don't want to do that. I would rather leave the OEM basepin as it is, and get a spare. Replacements (new manufacture) are available for the original Colts, and I was hoping someone who knows might advise me whether one of these would work or not. The diameter of the basepin on this Cimarron/Uberti Model P is 0.249". The cylinder fits well, with no discernable wobble. I'll try to post a picture of the left side of the revolver so you can check 'er out. Crooked River Bob SASS#26199L Quote
Boggus Deal #64218 Posted March 12 Posted March 12 You can cut off the rear end of the base pin you have. 2 Quote

Yessir, I could cut or grind some off, but I don't want to do that. I would rather keep the original as it is and get a spare if I can get one to fit. Cimarron does carry some spare parts, but I would just as soon get a spare basepin with only one ring on it, like the originals. Replacements for the original Colt basepins are available. I just need to know if they will interchange with the basepin on this Uberti. Crooked River Bob SASS#26199L Quote
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted March 12 Posted March 12 (edited) Bob, the newer Ubertis with 3 clicks have the original single-groove shorter base pins, so those are easily available. I know VTI had them in stock as of a few weeks ago because I ordered one (to replace the crappy Pietta pins). VTI's p/n for this one is UB:400021/noSafety and it's $21.90 edit: at the time I ordered, Cimarron was out of stock on that base pin. I didn't check Taylors since I had other stuff to order from VTI as well. Edited March 12 by Abilene, SASS # 27489 2 Quote
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted March 12 Posted March 12 (edited) PLUS ONE for Abilene. Don't need a "Colt" cylinder Base Pin. Plus you'll pay a premium for a "Colt" part. Call VTI Gunparts. Two weeks ago I bought three Uberti base pins, the same one Abilene referenced. That Uberti base pin is also a perfect fit for Pietta. PS: Forgot. To your original question, Yes, the Colt part will fit. Edited March 12 by Colorado Coffinmaker Add a comment 1 Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted March 13 Posted March 13 (edited) Just for kicks, I tried swapping a 3rd gen Colt pin into various clones. Uberti, Armi San Marco and others. It fit in all of them. Among other things, the 3rd Gen pin from a smokeless frame fit in an ASM black powder frame. Edited March 13 by H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 2 Quote
