Looking at Age based categories shb pg 6. It states for revolvers any legal style except gunfighter.  This tells me that Senior Gunfighter is not a category.  Yet some clubs have it.  Can someone please verify this?

It isn't but it is... See pg.11 Category Matrix

Base categories can be broken into more categories based on age, gender, etc.

Gunfighter, Duelist, Frontiersman, basically any category can be subdivided into age brackets. The rules for firearms revert to the base category (Gunfighter, Frontiersman, etc).

Senior gunfighter and senior duelist are not age/based categories. They are shooting style categories with an age restriction.  Adjustable sight revolvers are not allowed.

I don’t remember what year it changed but senior duelist used to allow adjustable sight revolvers.  I had a pair of Blackhawks I had intended to get short stroked to used in Senior Duelist but the rule changed  before I turned 60.

Confusing, I see the example on page 11 says senior lady gunfighter.  So why on page 6 does it say except gunfighter.

Thanks for the basic lesson. My point is why is there a discrepancy in the book.

There is no discrepancy.

"When breaking down all style/costume categories, the regulations for the base category are to be applied first, then the age limits."

In the cited example, the "base category" is GUNFIGHTER.

It shows how GUNFIGHTER category can be subdivided by gender, age, and propellant:

"- Gunfighter -> Lady Senior Gunfighter -> Lady Senior Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter."

There isn’t a discrepancy in the book in this case.  In ANY category where Gunfighter is part of the category or subdivision name, you may not use revolvers with adjustable sights!

You may use revolvers with adjustable sights in any category except those where “gunfighter” or “frontiersman” are part of the category title.  This also means that you can’t use revolvers with adjustable sights like the Ruger Old  Army or the “Target” variety of any other cap and ball revolver that has them in Frontiersman or any subdivision thereof.

OP is not asking about what revolvers are legal, he has omitted an important word.

There are age based categories.

There are shooting style categories.

The shooting style categories can have age bases within them (if participation allows). IE: the age base part is an add-on to the main category.

Gunfighter category is the only category that gunfighter style may be shot. NO other categories (age based, duelist, etc etc) can gunfighter be shot… with the exception of B-Western.

With one exception...

B-Western/Lady B-Western Category

...

Firearm Rules:

- Any main match revolver may be used.

- Revolvers may be shot in any SASS legal shooting style, at the shooter’s discretion.

I’m not trying to be difficult here, but page six states

For age based categories (senior in my example)

Revolvers may be shot in all legal styles EXCEPT gunfighter.

Is this referring to something else?

If you're shooting SENIOR as a "stand alone" category the restriction applies.

If SENIOR is applied as a subdivision of any other category, those category regs/restrictions apply.
