Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Time to raise my game with respect to the cart umbrella. The one I've been using is too small, too flimsy, and simply not fit for purpose. I've now solidly mounted a fishing rod holder to one side of the cart. I'm trying to figure out what to stick in it. Beach umbrellas are lightweight, and both tall and wide enough, but I don't think they are waterproof or even water repellent, since that's not really their purpose or use. Golf umbrellas are not tall enough. What do y'all use for large enough, tall enough, waterproof (or at least water repellent) umbrellas on your gun carts??? Quote
Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L Posted March 2 Posted March 2 check with Texas ShaDi and Calamity Jenn. they have a large umbrella that seems to be able to handle the winds. I'll email you their addresses cr Quote
Ya Big Tree Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I usually look for patio umbrellas. https://www.walmart.com/ip/MS-5FT-RED-SQ-UMB/7020359575?classType=VARIANT&athbdg=L1103 https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-7-5-Foot-Push-Up-Round-Market-Umbrella-Teal/2362669797?classType=REGULAR 1 Quote

SHOOTIN FOX Posted March 3 Posted March 3 (edited) Build a tee from 1.5 inch pvc ab place it between gun holder 2+3. Wide base in the bottom keeps it from punching through and adds stability. . you need one tee fitting bottom center two short legs left and right two end caps for the legs one length of pipe for the center riser if you need pics it will be tomorrow when I get home from EOT. I use it with a 9 foot sun umbrella that is waterproof/ resistant. https://www.amazon.com/Sport-Brella-Premiere-Umbrella-Shelter-Protection/dp/B0846PZ9MW/ref=sr_1_53?crid=31579EXM7VMRV&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.k1H8A9M1Brz45fLxai-CHzc6xeM91SeD0i-FrShpKG3XE1O_vV5p5hpnkeZNyi6jAnEHoYV300ght4t69nQHq3C_Cgh1jNgTe2eMOieFTYFp0poaZsKuU4GhpWEam-IhMLiPsRlQ4FIrrw558onV84ghEmVB1trqeSN-LZg3QmSwEi6Lc6sA9bOHFKeoAImOXEaGxJ21OzxzD7rpW8mTI33GlfpHHKb7DMbSVdnhyKAruyRI1WIk_D5UrRFu8HUvLdc5ukU6mbKBLACoFyzlh7fXKVJ6blHBlVka3ePur7Es3Z2W1xZ4LQFBSpZXvIsnDMVo5t4Hk2BcRy5D6g72wKcO2wCcuFDvin_0kOGZtOQ_ZNEuiGvLa_rYm4obv300pUE45PUrRfRDTDXlpDgv7jedHlK-tbIgRLA5tnZYbsZS-jFEmJxSV8HnzTRolQqh.9jkE8774QX-axE2gRGc53FyXEqoFGvQUjPQLvDH6xqg&dib_tag=se&keywords=sun+umbrella+uv+protection&qid=1740966600&sprefix=Sun+umbre%2Caps%2C192&sr=8-53 Edited March 3 by SHOOTIN FOX Added link 2 Quote
TN Mongo, SASS #61450 Posted March 3 Posted March 3 It depends on what type of gun cart you are using. When I had a wooden cart, I had a large, lightweight patio table umbrella. Now that I am using a Rugged Gear cart, I've been able to find attachments to hold a XL golf umbrella on the push handle of the cart. If it's a heavy downpour, I use the Rugged gear cart cover. 1 Quote
Yul Lose Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Back when I was supplying umbrellas with the gun carts that I built I got beach umbrellas from ShadeUSA. Fast shipping and great umbrellas. Quote
Cowtown Scout, SASS #53540 L Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Keep the ballist weight of your cart in mind. I have seen some that have blown over because of thier large umbrella and a strong wind gust. 3 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Several actually! Especially narrow wheel base ones. 1 Quote
Chief Rick Posted March 3 Posted March 3 I use pretty much the same setup as @SHOOTIN FOX. The upright portion can be made to whatever length you need for your particular umbrella. A small bungee cord between gun holders 2&3 keeps the holder in place. 1 Quote
Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 Thanks for all the great ideas and suggestions! I've got Plan A and Plan B now firmly in mind. If any of you are shooting at Battle of Plum Creek or Land Run, you'll see how it all turns out. Nostrum Damus Quote
watab kid Posted March 4 Posted March 4 i use golf unbrella on my golf cart based gun cart , you do have to think about the balast Quote
Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 My cart is built on a "twins jogging stroller" -- double-wide three-wheel base, heavy wood platform for the long gun butts and on which also sits an always too heavy "trunk" full of the goodies. Neither stability nor ballast are any problem. 1 Quote
Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 (edited) And that gap in the center between the double gun holders is just the right place to install a PVC pipe mount. The bottom end of the beach umbrella will sit in a hole in the butt holder section. Sounds like a plan. The hole to receive the end of the umbrella will be where the blue arrow is pointing. Scarlett Posted March 4 Posted March 4 The Umbrellas that work with the Umbrella Mounts that I sell (for Rugged Gear carts) are the Sport Brella Super Brella umbrellas. These have two zipper flaps that you can open if it is windy. The ones that Shootin Fox mentioned have the bigger pole. lots of different umbrellas will work with lots of different gun cart applications. The biggest thing you need to be aware of is, as @watab kid said, ballast. The only time my cart has EVER blown over was with the (bless their hearts) Rugged Gear handle mounted umbrella that was more like a golf umbrella. Two points of contact or a rod holder… the ones I sell have a pin that holds them at the bottom. I think you need to secure the pole somehow or the wind can just carry it off! Hugs! Scarlett PS if this doesn’t make sense I’m tired. Made it to Gallup NM today from EOT. 🤦🏼♀️🤣😉😂 3 1 Quote
Grizzly Dave Posted March 4 Posted March 4 Patio umbrella for me. bottom perm attached, top is put in when needed. as others said, wind is a factor, even with the little 'clamp' thing, I've had wind pull the umbrella out going up....then down a few feet away. My cart is heavy enough never had it blow over, then again if it gets breezy I fold the umbrella up 1 Quote
Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 (edited) All good stuff, thanks again. Mine will require some clever Rube Goldberg gadgetry due to the way the whole thing folds up to nothing when not in use. I've already had the kind of umbrella that just clamps on to the handlebar -- it was sub-optimal at best. I can't, however, permanently attach the lower section of a beach/patio umbrella because the handlebar folds at the hinges just above the wheels, up and then forward and then over (upside down) for stowage. There are solutions to every puzzle. Edited March 4 by Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Quote
watab kid Posted March 4 Posted March 4 scarlets right , grizley daves photo shows an excellent example of the system , my issue is my ultra light approach doent allow for that system , - but mine is not a handle mounted unit its attached lower on the main cart frame - still wouldnt trust it in high winds either , i may have to look into one of scarletts umbrellas Quote
Rip Snorter Posted March 4 Posted March 4 I had a contractor trash bag for the cart and a waxed Aussie style hat and Drover coat for me - still have them, still work. Never needed a parasol. 2 Quote

Never needed a parasol. Beaver fur felt hat and waxed duster work fine for keeping me dry, but that's not the issue at all. Only thing big and sturdy enough for the entire fully loaded cart is a gas grill cover, but just like your contractor trash bag, it has to be removed and replaced each time I need to get into the box or stow/retrieve a long gun, so that's NG because everything gets rained on in the process. Last time I shot a match in the rain it was raining during the match, not just when we were standing around doing nothing. I want access to my stuff while it is raining, without it all getting a good soaking. Edited March 4 by Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 1 Quote

Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 1 minute ago, Rip Snorter said: You ever go hunting? Same deal. Lots. Mostly bow hunting. And definitely not the same deal, in my experience. About 14 months ago one of my sons and I sat through 72 hours of downpour in Laguna Atascosa NWR. We took more than a third of the area's annual rainfall in 72 hours. I know about being wet; ground that was sandy on our way in was large lakes on our way out. I can dress accordingly (though I doubt anything could have kept us truly dry on that miserable hunt), and I can choose hunting gear and weapons that can stand getting wet a whole lot better, and are a whole lot easier to clean and dry out, than my 90 year old shotguns and lever guns. Bows and bolt guns are really simple. The compound bow doesn't even care about getting wet. My hunting rifle wears a finger cot over the muzzle to keep rain out of the barrel; the bullet doesn't notice it on its way out. I load the 4-round magazine into the rifle as I leave the truck; I don't touch the ammo again until the day's hunting is done. Even my Winchester SX3 wasn't that hard to clean after it took a bath in Laguna Madre's brine while shooting at ducks. Cowboy guns, not so simple. And I usually only have to clean one hunting tool at a time, not four (or eight when Bullion Rose is shooting, too). Definitely not the "same deal." Anyway, we're way off track here, sorry. I'm getting me a big umbrella for Nostrum Damus's gun cart. Anyone who wants to stick with the trash bag option is welcome to do so. Quote

J.S. Sooner, SASS #73526 Posted March 9 Posted March 9 This system works well, I have one on my Rugged Gear cart. http://ryderumbrellamount.com/ Quote
Tall John Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Several of us use a sportbrella. Very tough, super lightweight, well made and adjustable. and they have a vent that you can open when it gets breezy. They make an 8’ and a 9’ versions. I got lucky and got mine for $20 but Amazon sells them. https://a.co/d/86oLGC8 Quote
Nostrum Damus SASS #110702 Posted March 14 Author Posted March 14 I ultimately used a $17 beach umbrella (from Amazon) and spend the big bucks ($39.95) on a 90-degree clamp to secure the thing to my cart. I used an adjustable 90-degree drum kit clamp: Quote
watab kid Posted March 15 Posted March 15 now thats a clamp i would but into , i like it - never thought to use something like that but i see the advantages and one may show up on my cart soon Quote
