Cayuse Jack, SASS #19407 Posted February 23 Posted February 23 I am curious how many here on the wire currently shoot in CAS matches and how many matches per year? Not interested in participation years ago… I currently get to around 35 CAS matches a year. Quote
Mountain Man Champ Posted February 23 Posted February 23 My wife and I attend around 32 matches a year, give or take. Quote
Creeker, SASS #43022 Posted February 23 Posted February 23 My CAS participation has declined to about 15 matches a year. I was once an easy 40+ matches shooter. But after 18+ years as Club Match Director (for a couple different clubs); 16+ years as Club VP and then President - I got tired. After that, a significant knee injury, then Covid hit me hard; shoulder repair and a nasty fall that broke both wrists (not exactly a Gunfighter friendly injury). Since recovery - a lot of my time has been focused on my businesses and other priorities - add in that my primary shooting partner (my daughter) Desert Scorpion has moved on to other interests including running our family gunshop - and my wife, Painted Lady is not quite as passionate about Cowboy as I am; means a decline in my attendance was predictable. But I am still am avid Wire participant and don't really feel the quantity of a shooters matches either validates or invalidates a posters opinions. I see lots of low SASS numbers spouting off ridiculous utterings and plenty of new shooters asking astute and incisive questions. Age, experience, quantity of matches or a low SASS number have less to do with CAS intelligence or accurate information than many think. 5 Quote
Major BS Walker Regulator Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Factoring in the weather and the weekday matches I would say about 40. Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 In the last couple of years, I have only managed a handful of matches, mainly due to recovering from a serious injury and related health issues. Last year I participated in three matches as a shooter and two more as a helper/spectator. For several years before that, I shot as many as fifty matches a year for several years and that included major matches in many parts of the country and monthly matches at two clubs in a weekend whenever possible!! I even did a mid-week match or two! I hope to be back on my feet again in the next couple of weeks and I am already committed to two annual events and will make appearances with the intention of participating at several local clubs! 2 Quote
Last Call Saul Posted February 24 Posted February 24 (edited) I would say at least 3 matches a month for 9 months, so 30ish. But I am still new (4 years in the game) and eager Edited February 24 by Last Call Saul 1 Quote
Hoss Posted February 24 Posted February 24 At a minimum 2x month, some months 3. plus 5-6 annuals/yr and Land Run. 1 Quote
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I'm down to about 14 or 15 a season. Altogether too many venues have gone the way of the Dodo the last 6 - 8 years. I'm also not exactly a "Spring Chicken" anymore. Quote
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 For 20+ years, I shot about 40 matches/year, mostly Frontiersman. I shoot a bit less now that I'm an old fart, maybe 25 matches/year, mostly Frontier Cartridge. Can't/don't wanna drive really long distances anymore. Still have just as much fun tho! --Dawg Quote
Yellowstone Vic SASS#32968 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 36 +/- Monthly and Annual Matches a year. My wife Dakota Wild Kat gets 40 +/- cuz she says she married better than I did..... Vic 2 1 Quote
Doc Moses Posted February 24 Posted February 24 (edited) 12 to 15 a year. Mostly monthlies I try to make a 'big' match each year though. Edited February 24 by Doc Moses Quote
Erasmus Posted February 24 Posted February 24 (edited) 10 or so a year. I try to get to a monthly and the regional shoots in the non-hunting season. Come hunting season, my weekends are usually spent in the woods or the marsh. I've got another 15-20 years of working 40+ hour weeks before I can start making a match every week. Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I had a 40 hour/week job with no weekend work when I started so every weekend. Then in '01 got laid off and from then on worked two part time jobs that were both weekend work, so down to 12 per year at the lowest. When I retired from those jobs a while back I got back to every weekend. 2021: 46 2022: 46 2023: 37 2024: 41 Of those, 5 each year are annuals of the area clubs. Quote
Old Man Graybeard Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Last year…only 2 matches. Had some health issues to take care of…along with some other commitments. Already ahead of that this year. Probably on average 15 to twenty matches a year. And where I live…only 6 to seven months of shooting. Quote
Dapper Dave Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I've only made it to two so far, and the one for March is canceled due to EOT on the same weekend, so in April it will be three. I haven't seen any practice matches posted for my club yet. I want to shoot at least one a month. Quote
High Spade Mikey Wilson Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I prepare for 25 matches per year, and shoot on average about 20-23 per year. Quote
Dantankerous Posted February 24 Posted February 24 No where near enough as I still work. I'm shooting for 15 this year, monthlies and matches combined. 2 Quote
Go West Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Typically 3 per month and toss in a few like Bordertown. Occasional posts on the Wire. If my age and health keeps it up, they'll be using an hour glass to time me. 1 1 Quote
Duke Hunter Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I’m averaging around 35 per year the last 3 years. Quote
Randy Saint Eagle, SASS # 64903 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Around 30 a year including a couple of State Matches, a Regional and Land Run. I’ve had to miss EOT the last 2 years. Randy 1 Quote
Buffalo gus Posted February 24 Posted February 24 This May will be a year of shooting sass. I’ve made it to 11 local matches. I’d like to shoot more but it’s hard juggling work and young kids. Quote

Cowtown Scout, SASS #53540 L Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Don't really have a count of number of matches. However last year (2024) I shot Cowboy Action matches in 9 different states. Seven were multi-day State Championships, one was the multi-day National Championships, and one was a multi-day annual match. Not sure how many monthly matches I shot. This year (2025) the plan is to shoot in 13 different states. Five will be multi-day state championships, one will be a multi-day annual, one will be a multi-day regional and six will be monthly matches. 7 1 Quote
