Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 22, 2025 Posted February 22, 2025 This was the easiest trip to Ben Avery in years. Both I-40 and I-17 had been repaved. There was no dust, snow or even a head wind. Our camp site at Ben Avery was vacant when we arrived and I set up the trailer in time to shoot 5-Stand after dark. The presentations were fairly easy except trap #1 that threw a fast teal due west. It quickly disappeared from the flood lights and had to be engaged quickly. IMG_7232.mov IMG_7212.mov
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 22, 2025 Author Posted February 22, 2025 This morning on our way to Costco we stopped at Bruno’s reloading supply store. Two mummified critters greeted us at the door.. There was almost no Alliant powder in stock. I bought the last two bags of reclaimed shot to use in raffles.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 22, 2025 Author Posted February 22, 2025 Cactus League Spring Training is underway and we watched an afternoon game at the nearby Peoria Sports Complex. The Padres and the Mariners are both resident there and they played today. The Padres played well but the Mariners showed problems in both hitting and pitching.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 22, 2025 Author Posted February 22, 2025 Dinner after that game at the Biergarten German restaurant on Bell Road. I had the Cordon Bleu.
Choctaw Jack Posted February 22, 2025 Posted February 22, 2025 Thanks, Canby! Can't be there, so I'm looking forward to your blog. Choctaw
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 22, 2025 Author Posted February 22, 2025 There was a big crowd at Fire and Ice this morning. Parking is much improved but the need to sign new liability release forms for the new Cowtown management slowed entry to the range.

Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 They started out brightly polished and were loaded with APP. In the dry desert air tarnish builds up slowly. Some of the cases went two days without cleaning. They were rinsed twice in hot water then bathed in a weak vinegar solution for three hours then drained and set out to dry.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 Today was a shopping day. We make a trip to Mesa where Wild West Mercantile is located. They give a discount to EOT shooters. Many of the trousers I wear shooting came from their bargain bin. If you are skinny as a bean pole or morbidity obese the bargain bin has a good selection. For all sizes in between one should not be picky in color or pattern. While in Mesa we shopped Superstition Market, a large produce and fruit outlet with very low prices on locally grown items. Below Doc selects lemons sold for 25-cents each.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 We stocked on locally grown icitrus. Update: I ate an orange and a grapefruit when I returned to our campground. They both were tree-ripened and very tasty.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 Bell peppers for our eggs while camping.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 I use molasses when baking dark breads and restocked for the year.

Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 Doc went to med school in Moscow and likes many Russian foods so we visited the Yasha from Russia store. Doc bought some “Jewish sausage”, rye bread and buckwheat.

Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 I always feel the need to photo the dried fish.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 24, 2025 Author Posted February 24, 2025 No blowing dust tonight- time to grill for dinner.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 26, 2025 Author Posted February 26, 2025 I shot the sporting clays side match yesterday. Hot Tamale, Hawkshaw Fred and Lightfoot were on my squad. We shot fifty clays in report pairs on the Quail Course - a beginners course located just behind the Clay Target Center office. No motorized cart was needed and the course was shootable with short- barreled, cylinder bore shotguns. I shot black powder and had some trouble seeing the second clay.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 26, 2025 Author Posted February 26, 2025 This morning we shot the long range, rifle caliber lever action rifle side match. Our Marlin 336 in 30-30 plunked rounds on large, white steel plates. While one had ten minutes to shoot five rounds, I tried to shoot faster to be competitive. I shot in 43 seconds. The leader when I left shot in 23 seconds. Doc looks forward to shooting the rifle elsewhere this year.
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 27, 2025 Author Posted February 27, 2025 This afternoon I bought a new gun belt from Mernickle. They finally had one in the length, color and style I wanted. It is time to retire my old tool belt. I shot the Plainsman this afternoon. There were two posses and Tex was on mine. Calamity Crow, another local club member shot her first Plainsman with a borrowed Handi-rifle. She is now shopping for one. IMG_0604.mov
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 27, 2025 Author Posted February 27, 2025 Wind blew hard all night and this morning the riverboat prop was on the ground. Two other props are being supported with forklifts. One Posse 17 has shooters from Germany, Australia and New Zealand. I will video them over the next three days and post.
Barry Sloe Posted February 27, 2025 Posted February 27, 2025 We shot with the Kiwi group last weekend in Tombstone. A great bunch and FAST. Enjoy yourselves, Barry Sloe and Trizzlee
