Chicago kidd Posted February 21 Posted February 21 I had heart issues and had a defibrillator installed on my right side so they said no more shotgun on that side. Any one have any tip for me as how to aim I would appreciate and help or suggestions thank you Quote
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 21 Posted February 21 You should have little trouble judging left and right. I find I need to aim lower than I think needed to get good hits. A longer barreled shotgun might help. PM Kid Rich who shoots Outlaw. 2 2 Quote
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted February 21 Posted February 21 You will miss a lot at first and have to "walk it in" but after a little practice muscle memory will take care of it. 2 Quote
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Shoot the shotgun left handed. It'll take some practice, but shooting from the other shoulder can be learned. 2 Quote
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Your 'OUTLAW' shooters all shoot the SG from the hip. Some use the 87, some use the 97 and some use the SxS. But, they shoot from the hip. I have no helpful tips as for accuracy because I still miss from the shoulder. BUT maybe TN Tombstone will chime in and give some valuable info. He's considered a good OUTLAW shooter and basically authored the rules/guidelines for OUTLAWs. Best regards ..........Widder 1 Quote

slow poke gear Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Try pulling the trigger with your middle finger and point the index/pointer finger at the targets. The couple of times I have played with outlaw class I did this with rifle and shotgun. It seemed to get me close. 1 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted February 21 Posted February 21 With my bad shoulder I'd love to learn outlaw, but most places I shoot have at least a few stages that are engaged thru windows. Some are pretty high for me now, so outlaw would surely not work without standing on a booster chair! Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted February 21 Posted February 21 The first mistake most people make about Outlaw is that you have to shoot from hip level! NOT SO!! The requirement is that you shoot from below sight level. You can raise your shotgun or pistols above the level of whatever prop is in front of you. You’re just not raising them to sight level! Some even fire their shotgun with the buttstock under their armpit. As far as shooting below sight level with the shotgun, think of the gun as a broomstick and you’re poking the targets with it!! It’s worked for others!! 1 2 Quote

Also noted from watching and reading is that the pistols require the elbows bent, agree from shooting at Oak Ridge that is does not require from the hips/waist, but also saw someone at an open house a few years ago shoot shotgun from almost knee level. Looks cool, but I'm not ready to try any of it at a range with zero tolerance for rounds over the berm. But playing a bit at other safe places, it can be learned. The three things I can suggest if a shotgun is not going to be shouldered is to shoot light loads, shoot out of a heavy gun, and practice. And the only other caution to add is if a gun is at all prone to bump fire, not having it firmly shouldered might help bring this "feature" out. Quote
Tn Tombstone Posted February 21 Posted February 21 OP said shotgun so back to topic for a short post Hold the shotgun where it is comfortable, for me that is above my pistol butt. Look where you want to hit on the target, squeeze the triqger. You probably hit low the first time. It takes a little practice but it gets easier. Some of my partners are known to squat a little for some reason.it seems to help them. Let the gun rock a little, dont try to hold it rock steady. I am also not sure why you can shoot the rifle from the shoulder but not the shotgun. 1 2 Quote
Mister Badly Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Rifle is low impact. I CAN shoot my rifle held against the ball of my arm bone but only do it on movers. If you shoot a 97 shotgun don't hold the stock too loosely or the front of the trigger guard will cut yer finger. I put cushioned tape on my trigger finger. Most people miss high, especially from an elevated shooting position. FYI, Outlaws do have more fun. https://youtu.be/vyPKvyKPASc?si=lrVbwkVho6OHJ4-K 2 Quote
Chicago kidd Posted February 22 Author Posted February 22 Thanks to everyone for your help I have a stover supreme 20 in 12 Grage but doctors definitely said no to the right side left side ok but still makes me nervous Quote
X Mark Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Shooting from the hip ain't no big deal . It's easy and you'll catch on quickly . 1 Quote
Tn Tombstone Posted February 22 Posted February 22 oh yea, if you are shooting over or through something you will shoot high every time until you figure out you are not going to hit the table. Quote
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted February 22 Posted February 22 And don't forget....... the 5' and 10' RULE is still the same for hip shooters. ..........Widder 1 Quote
Turkey Flats Jack Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I've always shot the shotgun from my left hand. I use my dominant hand to load the shells. I've never understood how a person was able to load a sxs with their non dominant hand. Everytime I've tried the shells end up everywhere but in the chamber. Quote
G W Wade Posted February 22 Posted February 22 In my mis-spent youth enjoyed trying to do the trick shots from the experts. Lots of fun Show an article on Instinctive shooting. Start with a large cardboard backer with piece of typing paper or paper plate. Step back 1 yard. Draw and fire, one shot. If you hit, take 1 step back. Repeat until pistol empty. Anytime you miss, start over at start position. Muscle emory kicks in pretty soon. Still working pretty good even 50+ years. GW 1 1 Quote

Flying W Ramrod Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Just be aware, there are some ranges that do not allow "unaimed" shots. You can't shoot from hip or shoot outlaw. Not the clubs rule, usually, the range rule. 1 Quote
