This is a thread on another board.

"Were pistol rounds used by American law enforcement forced to change as Americans got fatter?"

He mentions how when Roosevelt was Police commissioner of New York City they were issued 32 Colts. But as people got fatter and fatter and fatter that wimpy little 32 would not have enough penetration to do any damage so they had to go to the 38 and the 357 and the 9 mm and ...

And as the obesity rate of Americans is increasing, they'll be using the S & W 500 Magnum soon!:o

I think that guy Alpo is referring to is just some ‘whipped guy making excuses for buying bigger guns and posting it online so he can say “Look honey, these guys agree that I need a .45!”

It isn't the strange questions....it's the answers to the questions that intrigue me.

Heck sometimes my own answers intrigue me.

I was taught the Three Bs:  Belly, brisket, brain.

I think it's true. 100 years ago people hunted deer with 44-40's, .22 hornet and even .22 LR, then when all the easy to kill deer were gone they switched to 30-30, 35 Remington and the like, by the end of WWII they had to move on to .270 and 30-06. Now we use .300 and 7mm magnums.

I think the goal is gun and ammo sales, not deer being harder to kill or further away.
A couple of years ago my nephews wife was bragging to me about the deer she got with her new rifle. I asked what rifle she had.
“Oh, it’s a custom built rifle from (who ever the heck). It’s a tack driver .300 Win Mag.”

I said “How far was the deer out there?”

”Oh, maybe 70 yards. That’s about how far it is for all my deer”
I said “Holy Sh**! You ever consider a .30-30? It’s a lot cheaper, less recoil and it’ll get the job done at those distances.”

She made a face and said “Who want to shoot those old things?”

Yeah, she’s a pinhead…

Yep.  Never mind the  hundreds of thousands,  if not millions,  of deer and elk that have been taken with the venerable 30-30,  it's totally inadequate for anything bigger than a gopher.  You need at least a 11.4x99 for even California deer.

I think I need to turn it up all the way and break the knob off.
