Does anyone still have load data available for .45 Cowboy Special loads under either 160g or 185g RNFP - for Trail Boss?

RR

*Yes, I know TB is no longer available but I have a bunch...

NO, I don't, but like everybody else who drift the thread, I can fix you up with 3F APP. 😁🤪

4.1 gr under a 160 gr bullet works great for me. That’s a mid-range load. Burns really clean.

No data, for a Trail Boss load?

Just use this proceedure.

Figure out how much powder will fit in the case so that it just touches the base of the seated bullet.  This is your max charge.   70% of that charge is your starting load.

This "formula" was published by Hogdon and will supposedly work for any caliber.   I have used it myself for more than a few.

From Adirondack Jack's C45S Webpage:

160 grain bullet, 3.8 grains Trail Boss, 520 FPS velocity, Remarks -- A winning load from a state Champion

When I shot C45S, I had very good luck with 3.9 grains of TB under a 160 RNFP.

The load I use for my wife in C45S is a Barnstormer 130 gr. over 4 gr. Trail Boss with a Federal LPP.

She has arthritis in both wrists and handles these pretty easily.

These loads were listed by other members on the wire. I have used a couple of these loads but have no personal experience with most listed. Double check the data and use at your own RISK!!

I wouldn't waste the last of my TB in .45 Short Colt* Titegroup is fine for that cat'ridge.

TB in use for my rifle using .45 Long Colt!*

* See what a discussion/argument I started there?**

Responding to such a flagrant, yet whimsical misuse of names would be like a  stump.png.f26d209dcdd1cd1c06c374a0719d38d8.png arguing with you.  Especially as you obviously know it's correct nomenclature:

Humor is always welcome... 😁.

Oh, and for those the say Starline calls it the 45 Cowboy Special... don't confuse their numerical listing as their name for the case... it's clear to anyone who can read their description of this product:

Quote

The Cowboy .45 Special is a case that is optimized for use with light loads in .45 Colt caliber revolvers for Cowboy Action Shooting. Light loads with excessive airspace are a recipe for case splits and erratic function. By using the Cowboy .45 Special case...

Just an fyi on Trail Boss availability - at the SHOT show Chris Hodgdon made the announcement that Trail Boss will be available this year. Perhaps this summer or maybe in the fall.

That may be an absolute possibility.

I use 3.6gr TB for 130gr to 160gr. Same load for rifle or pistol.

Hawkeye Kid...  Thx... Are you shooting .45 Cowboy Special in a "rifle?" If so, which one?

I do sometimes. A Uberti Henry with a 18.5 “ barrel. I use the 160gr or 170gr RNFP bullets. Same 3.6 gr of TB load. Also have used 3.8gr of WST with good success.

HK... So, no feeding problems with the .45CS in the Henry?

RR

None at all. The Henry is short stroked, all I did was modify the carrier with a stop ( set screw) to compensate for the cartridge length. The front end of the bolt also needed a little filing to clear the set screw.

Hawkeye Kid...

Nice!!!
