Think thatched roofs, from days when labor was the cheapest thing - nothing to pay out.  A nearly opposite paradigm these days.

Thatched roofs aren't common in the U.S., but there are still parts of the world using them.  

 

Today's useless fact: I know that in the foothills of Nepal, Gurkha families still use thatched huts and a Gurkha rifleman in the British Army will send money home so that his family can buy a tin roof, which is considered a luxury item.
