Now there is something I never considered

You have a kid in college. He is not living in the dorm. He rents an apartment off campus.

 

But, because he's your kid and you're paying for him to go to school, you are paying the rent on the apartment.

 

Would you send him a check every month so he can pay his rent, or would you send the check directly to the landlady?

I think that I would send it to him. He's in college. He's supposed to be, at least somewhat, grown up. Should be able to take care of simple little things like cashing the check and then paying the landlady.

I am currently in this situation. He has an account with the rental company set up to automatically take it out of HIS checking account. We have occasionally had to pitch in and help and when we do we cut him a check to deposit in HIS checking account. Not exactly the same but if he were writing a check every month we would handle it the same; HE would write them a check out of HIS account.

On the news occasionally here, the students at Ivy League Dartmouth can't afford to eat!! They drive expensive cars though! I wouldn't trust one to pay for his/her/it's coffee at the always crowded Starbucks let alone rent.

I would venture to guess that very few people are actually writing a paper check. 

My wife and I have separate "checking" accounts, though neither one of us has ever written a check. It's all done online or with a debit card these days. Our accounts are linked to where either one of us can transfer funds between them, and our daughter's debit account is linked to my wife's. If our daughter needs money, (car repair, or some other unexpected expense), my wife can simply transfer her money to our daughter, or I can transfer money to my wife, then she can transfer it to our daughter. Our daughter then pays it with her debit card.

We own rentals in a college town and while we set it up with the student to pay the rent we also require them to put the parents contact info on file.  If rent is late the parents get a call.
