We got a new drive through coffee house in town. It always has customers.  The other day,  they were lined up all the way around and down the sholder of the highway.  Out of curiosity,  I looked up their menu. Around $5 for small cup. On up as you add foam, sprinkles, etc. More for larger size. They serve buns, rolls, egg biscuits of assortment and breakfast burritos. All around $5 and up. Cookie is $2.50.

How can people get addicted to this?  I made myself a $20 breakfast this morning.  It doesn't seem that tough.

How does anything get this popular? Because it simply because it becomes "The Thing to Do". Somebody that people care, (for whatever reason), about does it, the sheeple follow along, and it becomes mainstream. Only those of us that are , for lack of a better word, outliers, that don't follow the crowd, stay away from it.

I didn't start out to be this way, but I was so NOT one of the "Cool Kids", or part of the In Crowd" in school, that it's how I turned out. Most of the people that have been my friends in my life were the same way. Quite honestly, if there is something going on that EVERYBODY is doing, I go out of my way NOT to do it, unless it actually makes sense to do so. For instance, I still have a flip phone. I either carry a 1911 or a revolver for my EDC, NOT a micro 9.

Many years ago, I was reading a New Years article listing the "trends" that had been popular during the previous year, that now were not. I was pleased to see that I had not participated in a single one of them.

We have one that looks like a bob house for ice fishing. They only sell expresso and always have a line of cars waiting!

I started noticing this trend in CA over 20 years ago. Mostly at Starbucks, but there were others that were popular.

I was told that this had been a trend in Seattle long before I saw it in SoCal.
When I worked in Charlotte from. ‘05-‘10 it was common for some of the ladies to roll in for work discussing how long they “had” to wait in line to get their morning coffee.
In Oregon, 2013-2018 the coffee business that probably surpassed Starbucks was Dutch Brothers, but coffee drive thru’s were all over the place in Oregon.
Here in WV Dunkin’ Donuts seems to be Starbucks biggest competitor.

Personally, I would rather walk in to get my coffee when I buy coffee out snd about, which is rare.

Maybe they just never learned how to make a good cup of coffee. :)

I don’t drink coffee either! Not by choice, but because I’m allergic to it.  But Schoolmarm does and she usually makes her own.

I took her to a Starschmuck’s once and we waited in line for nearly half an hour, (good thing we had already done all the things on our schedule) and I promised her that I would NEVER do that again!!

The Dutch Brothers brand is opening in several locations here in Middle Tennessee and we’ve stopped there a few times when it was on our way to somewhere else. Very short wait and I guess they are reasonably priced.

I too am not one to go with the herd. I avoid most of the “in things” or I did them before they were “in” and have since moved on!

I don’t understand this. If you go to work early, while you’re getting ready, showering etc. make some coffee and pour it in a stainless steel mug (I’ve got 6 of them) and off you go! Pretty easy !

The last store bought coffee I've had was from Casey's (gas station/convenient store). I walked back to their food concession area and couldn't see any coffee.  An older fellow was there so I asked him. He led me to a bank of machines with touch screens.  Fresh brewed each cup. Must have been a hundred combinations possible.  "I just want coffee."  He lead me through the steps to just get coffee.  I got up to the counter and the money taker guy said the guy ahead of you paid for your coffee too. Nice of him. He was well away from me to thank him.

As far as I’m concerned I make the best cup of coffee. ;)

I haven’t found a coffee house, store or restaurant that makes coffee that I truly like better than mine. At least not here in the U.S.

In our area the Dutch brothers are very popular. I've never seen a full go inside and sit down Dutch bros. Just the small drive throughs. They really do a ton of business. Considering that it's just those small drive throughs it seems like a license to print money. I occasionally stop at one in a local small town but I never pull in when there's more then a couple of cars.

That's because you're just drinking coffee. You're not getting a expressodoubleshotlatteesteampunk whatever. It's just coffee, it's not an expression of the lifestyle that you want other people to think you have.

For the most part coffee is coffee.  I set up the coffee machine just before I go to bed,  in the morning I punch the brew button and by the time my morning rituals and ablutions, it's ready.

About 25 years ago we'd walk over to the local Starbucks on a Saturday morning for a splurge on one of the dessert coffees after breakfast.  Sometimes we'd join the local cops since we knew them from the range, sometimes just sip as we walked home.

Any more I'll only buy at a coffee shop if we're out and about and my travel cup has gone dry, or if I want a specific type of coffee,  usually Yirgacheffe or Sidamo.  20 oz, 2 sugar or honey.

We just got our first “Dutch Bros”.  Being new the traffic is crazy. Terrible traffic flow pattern is affecting and blocking businesses on both sides of the store. Have to go around 3 sides of a square to get into Taco Bell, can’t access south bound thoroughfare anymore when leaving, brand new tire place lost their entrance because traffic is backed into the parking lot. Had a free drink day on opening, coffee is okay but nothing special. Prefer my home brew by quite a bit. Hoping things settle down soon but doubt I would go out of my way to get a coffee.

City planners and code enforcement got wise to what occurs in California when a Starbucks or In & Out Burgers wants to build a new restaurant and they make them show how they will route customer vehicles without disrupting traffic or access to other businesses.
If their plan is inadequate they don’t get to build.

We buy whole bean from a local coffee house (not a chain) that buy's beans from all over the world roasts them in-house.   Takes about 45 seconds to grind and about 5 minutes to brew in the Bunn.  Been doing this for about ten years now and simply can't go back to Folgers/Maxwell House/etc.  So I guess we're coffee snobs.

Once in a while we'll get a frappa-whatever of the day when we're there buying coffee.   Usually in the afternoon.

If I need COFFEE on the go I pull in at the next gas station.   Need to do that once in a while to keep the immune system in shape anyway.

But then those same planners will just pencil whip through an 800 unit housing project with only one entrance/exit onto a 2 lane road, claiming that it will have no impact on local traffic.

Ya'll's mindset is pouring a cup of coffee. 90% of the people in line aren't getting a cup of coffee. Thats called an Americano. So, espresso, lattte. Mocachino, added flavors, double shots, teas. etc.

Also the big thing is convenience. Who here has a real latte or espresso machine at home? Regular coffee made on an espresso machine is far better than "brewed" coffee that sits in a pot. Its fresh and lava hot.

Their brewed coffees have multiple flavors you can ask for. So you don't have 4 bags of beans sitting at home going stale.

Its not abut being part of the in crowd. Its getting coffee and food you can't get at home without a lot of hassle and expense.

Me, chai tea latte with a shot of espresso!

Americano is not just “ a cup of coffee” if made right.

The least expensive coffee I've found is Kirkland from Costco.
I have to feed 50+ people on a regular basis at my lodge, so cost is a consideration.

The Kirkland coffee is 100% Arabic as well.

Howdy

Over the years I have helped out with makin coffee in offices.

One place ten cents got you one cuppa coffee honor system.

A while later the coffee maker stopped and I couldnt get it runnin so

I took the accumulated money and bought a new one for right at a hundred

bucks.  Didnt have to ask anyone for donations at all.

That was dunkin donuts regular coffee. Only one lady said it was too weak.

Cant please everone, I guess.   ten cents probably twenty today.

And a whole office of programmers nearly lived on coffee.

Best

CR

five bucks   no way.  Lets buy some stock....

We had a coffee pot set up in our supply closet.  First in put the coffee on.  I find Starbucks pretentious.  The coffee (black, please) is just as good at McDonald's.

At the cafeteria at work, they made the coffee really stong. I'd say something about it but cafeteria lady would explain, if they made it any weaker, people would explain. I'd get a half cup and top it off with hot water.  But still it was just coffee.

I have a programmable pot that I fill at night and it’s waiting on me, usually, when I wake up. Like mentioned above, I put it in a cup and go. It also has an insulated carafe and shuts off the pot when finished brewing. I like both of those features.

I guess that's it. I've never had any of the fancy stuff to develop a taste for it. Born with a wooden spoon in my mouth.  :P
