My brother and sister-in-law were talking about having my wife and I over for dinner soon. My sister-in-law mentioned fried SPAM and I couldn’t say “NO!” fast enough or forcefully enough. She thought I was kidding. My wife told her “He’s not kidding and if he gets just a whiff of it he will leave.” SPAM is one thing I will get rude over. I was forced to eat it as a kid. Ain’t happening now.
Rip Snorter Posted February 5, 2025 Posted February 5, 2025 Right after WWII, Dad was out of the navy and into Med School. Grandfather had a store, and a bunch of Spam that was no longer selling. I ate Spam made with every possible variation. I detest it to this day, and the smell is nearly as bad as the taste.

Ain’t happening now. After WWII a lot of public schools got surplus rations for the school cafeterias. Now after all these years I still can't stomach SPAM, stewed tomatoes, potato soup, cooked cabbage, strawberry jam, lima beans, navy beans, and a number of other delicacies. I picked up the "S.P.A,M." from a kid from Arkansas who was my bunk mate the second time I went to 'Nam.
J.D. Daily Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Don't really care for Spam; however, when with the 25th ID in Dau Tieng running the Div's pirate radio station the platoon Sargent who was also running a MARS radio station had a deal with the base S4 Sargent. The deal is we got LERP rations, steak, chicken & fresh veggies for the S4 Sargent not having to wait in the station waiting room until a phone connection was made to his wife. Compared to the food served by the base mess it was 5 star. PS I'd rather eat ham since it has less grease & salt. Since 1971 I've eaten it a few times most when visiting HI.

The last job I worked in L.A. before retiring one of my bosses was from Hawaii. Everyone assumed he liked SPAM. He did not. One day he ran down a list of SPAM, uh, “delicacies” that his family made for get togethers when he was a kid. I couldn’t believe how many ways Hawaiians came up with to eat that stuff. The one that pretty much shut my appetite down was something his aunt made that included marshmallows and papaya jelly. I don’t recall the other ingredients. I kind of phased out at the thought of it.
