Rootin Tootin Posted February 3 Posted February 3 I recently purchased a lightly used Uberti 357 1873 rifle with a pioneer short stroke. The shooter wasn't very fast so there was no problem, but I cycle a rifle very fast for an old guy. (10 rounds in 4.2 seconds). My problem is that the bolt shoulder catches on the front taper of the carrier and stops the bolt from full travel backwards, when running it fast. It has Wisper springs for carrier and lever. How can I fix this speed problem? Do I notch the lifter, so it rides lower on the down movement or do I file the shoulder on the carrier? My other 73, 357 rifle has everything the same except there is a deeper notch on the lifter arm. Quote
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted February 4 Posted February 4 The rifle is slightly out of time. Needs a slight adjustment of the Carrier Block Arm or a replacement carrier block arm to be correctly timed. 4 Quote
Rootin Tootin Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 (edited) So do I notch the arm on the top, where there is already a slight notch, a little bit more, or add to the bottom of the ball section on the tip of the arm Edited February 4 by Rootin Tootin Quote
G W Wade Posted February 4 Posted February 4 RT, I would suggest you get out the directions and start from square one. If you don't have them, Pioneer has videos to show you how. Remember, I never lied to you GW 2 Quote
Red Rider Rudy Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Mine was doing that, and it was a weak spring on the right side. Wasn't holding the carrier down. 1 Quote
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted February 4 Posted February 4 The right side spring doesn't "hold the carrier DOWN." It holds the carrier "UP." If the spring is weak, the carrier begins to drop immediately and the Bolt jams way forward. 3 Quote

Rootin Tootin Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 Problem resolved. Joe at PGW suggested opening the throat on the carrier where the top goes from wide to narrow. 1 Quote

Thx Perhaps it's what is seen in the 4th video here: https://www.pioneergunworks.com/pages/installation-instructions-technical-info? RT - that may work but it still seems like there's an issue with the timing. Double check your lifter spring and height of the carrier at full stroke. 2 Quote
Rootin Tootin Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Timing is perfect, springs are new. After discussing the problem with Joe, It took 5 attempts at removing a little from the carrier throat at the ridges where the wide portion tightens down to the narrow section on the top of the carrier. Runs great. Called Joe and discussed the results. All is good. Thanks to all that chimed in. Regards... RT 3 Quote
