Alpo Posted January 29 Posted January 29 These are both based on a television show. Question number one. Vietnam. 1969. Widowed mother, one child. The sole support of his widowed mother. Would that prevent him from being drafted? Would that keep him out? Question number two. Cowboy boots. You have the foot, and you have the shaft. If you were to put the boot on one day and the heel tore loose from the shaft - the foot is in fine shape, it just came loose from the shaft. Couldn't you sew it back on? Assuming that the thread tore through the leather, either on the shaft or on the heel or both. Could you take the shaft and trim the bottom of it, or shave down the top of the heel, to get rid of all the thread holes, then sew it together like you were making a new pair of boots? Then your left boot would be 1/8 of an inch shorter than your right boot, but you pull your pants legs down over the shaft so no one would ever know. Quote
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted January 29 Posted January 29 (edited) Mike Frank's boots were pretty much done for. The only thing I can think of to repair them would be a leather patch on the inside of the heel and the remnants of the boot sewn to that. But the reality of then is that if that part of the leather was that rotten, the rest of the boot wouldn't be far behind. And based on the story line, those boots would be about 30 years old. Unless Mike took exceptional care of them, they'd be toast. As for the show, I like it so far with one exception. IT SHOULD TAKE PLACE IN THE D.C. AREA!!! Edited January 29 by Sgt. C.J. He was stationed in Pendleton. His wife and kid were killed in Pendleton. And they have that little hidden arc that he doesn't know about, where one of his coworkers was supposed to be the guard, but he begged out because his kid was sick, so another guy took over and the other guy got killed. That wouldn't work if he was in DC. 1 Quote

No. He had the house in D.C. that he still lived in when he was at N.C.I.S. He took years before he was able to sleep in his marital bed again. They showed flashbacks of his daughter helping him in the basement. His daughter and her best friend buried a Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox in the backyard with some keepsakes in it. Duckie originally bought that house for him and his mother. He showed Gibbs the house before his mother arrived from England. Duckie's mother hated the house, so Gibbs got the house, though I don't remember if he bought the house from Duckie or what, but he had the house before he married Shannon. Quote
Alpo Posted January 29 Author Posted January 29 Ducky rented the house and brought his mother over. She didn't like it. They found another place to live. Gibbs bought the house. Married Shannon, had Kelly, got transferred to Pendleton. That's what pissed his mother-in-law off - "you took our girls to California!" Remember the mother-in-law episode, where she killed her fiancé the Navy captain because he had been involved with the cartel that Pedro was a member of, so he was just as guilty as Pedro. They had an episode with this DEA agent. He was the son of the NIS agent that had been the guard for Shannon and Kelly. At the end of that episode Gibbs went to California and he and the DEA guy poured the dead agent/father's ashes in the Pacific. While he was there he went by this house. He and Shannon and Kelly had lived there. There's a bird bath in the front yard that he had built. In the concrete in the bottom of the bowl all three of them had put their hand print and signed them - Mom, Dad, Kelly. In the last episode - before the Christmas break - he couldn't stand to live in the house because Shannon and Kelly were dead. This was before he was NIS, before he went South and killed Pedro. While he was still stove up from being blowed up in Kuwait. So he rented an apartment. And he took his rules outside and threw them in the garbage can, and his father took them out of the garbage and took them back to Pennsylvania with him. Quote
watab kid Posted January 29 Posted January 29 (edited) my recollection of 1969 is that there was some deferment for hardship and sole survivorship - my good friend in college was deferred because his brother was killed there and his father had passed away , now i wasnt really paying that much attention then i was 1A and got a student deferment , i just remember him telling me that , he was sole support for his mother , as to the boots , i had a pair back then that i wore the heels and soles out on , there was a shoe store in town with a cobbler , he resoled and rehealed my boots to like new , but i dont think there are a lot of those craftsmen left today , its a just buy new society now , i came back to add i like the origins series but ive not fact checked it as close as all you have , Edited January 29 by watab kid Quote

Alpo, because of you I have to say something I rarely need to, I was wrong. I had completely forgotten about Gibbs being transferred to Pendelton. We watched that episode today, so that clears up what I had thought was a massive continuity error. I'm not wrong often, (I know it sounds like I'm blowing my own horn here, but I try to get things right), but when I am, I make it a point to admit it and thank whoever showed me that I was, so Thank You. 1 Quote
