Dr just left after putting my blue Merle Aussie to sleep. Cali would have been 15 years old on Friday. Me and Sharon are just sitting here and crying a little.

I'm very sorry for your loss.  I understand how dogs weave their way into your life.   It's happened to me.   It's always hard to loose a member of the family.

I am not a fan of Kipling, but this is one he got right:

The Power of the Dog

Rudyard Kipling

1865 – 1936

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?

Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—

Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.\

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But… you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,

A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

This poem is in the public domain.

Please post a your favorite pic of Cali. This is Dash:

Harsh, been in your shoes quite a few times.  Sincere sympathy.  The only bad part of having dog friends.  The rest outweighs it,  IMHO.  I will always have dog friends.

A few things to contemplate.  Please note that neither of these are an official position on animals and their place in creation and salvation.

" In the words of Starets Zosima in Dostoevsky's master-work The Brothers Karamazov: 'Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and an untroubled joy. Do not trouble it, do not torment them, do not go
against God's purpose. Man, do not exalt yourself above the
animals; they are sinless, and you, you with all your grandeur,
defile the earth through your appearance upon it, and leave
traces of your defilement behind you - alas, this is true of almost every one of us!'21

Many of us here on the Wire can sympathize with you and share in your grievance.

Our little 'Benji' had to be put to sleep a few years back and his memory still occupies fun conversation between me and the wife.

Indeed...... those pets become part of the family and basically, we are blessed that THEY have allowed us to be a part

of their lives.

So very sorry.  We lost two a few years ago.  The pain is still there even after all this time.

But we pushed on and adopted two rescues that help ease the pain.

Biggest mistake I made when my first boy went (when I was an adult) was letting 4 or 5 years go by without a dog friend.  Now never less than 2, usually 3.  Dogs rule!

I know that pain all too well.  The last one I lost was on 4 Dec 2023.  In Sept 2024 I got another little girl who now rules the house and me!

That is the only way to heal the break in your heart.

I would like to thank everyone for their support and kind words. They mean so much that I cannot adequately express my gratitude. Thank you also for the pm’s and personal experiences that have been shared, they are helping us to know we are not alone. Sharon and I are reminiscing today, remembering all the days camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains, the times we spent playing tug (her favorite game) and how she showed us to love completely when she would cuddle with us on the couch if we were down or just touch us at night to let us know things were okay. A special girl, to us more than just a dog, truly a friend and family member.
Again thank you.

Respectfully

Been there - Done that more times than I would like to think about. Our hearts go out to you and the family. For most of us they are part of our family, not just a dog. We have gotten into always having 2 now about 5 years apart so we always have one around. It does make it easier to transfer more love to the remaining one but yes, there is a big hole in your heart for awhile. I just hope and pray that they will be there to meet us when we cross that bridge.

It’s been since late spring since The Boobie left us.  Shopping around for a suitable rescue to replace her.

I’m so sorry for your loss! You’ll remember Cali with joy and laughter as time passes.

Don’t wait too long to find a new friend!!
