T-Square Posted January 26 Posted January 26 This will be my first Land Run, so here is my ask: If you went to Land Run ONCE (recently) what are the Five (5) most important things you wish you knew, before you went? If you are a veteran of Land Run - What are the Five (5) most important things that you would tell a First-timer? I picked the number five (5) so you don't need to write a novel - but the more you share of your experience, the better we Newbies will be prepared. I think we have the basics covered, (1) like bring your guns, and your back-up guns, (2) wear comfortable costumes, and (3) no S#x a week before that could rob you of your Cowboy energy - other than that, what would you want to have known, and want others to know ?? What customs and traditions should we prepare for ? Just kidding on number (3) - I wanted to make sure you were paying attention ! LOL Thanks in advance for all the advice ! 1 1 Quote
Cowtown Scout, SASS #53540 L Posted January 26 Posted January 26 It’s a big cowboy match at a great venue run by great people. Just prepare like any other cowboy match - and go have fun!!! 8 1 Quote

oak creek martin Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Land Run is an exceptional match. If you pay attention closely, you will be amazed at how smooth the whole process is and how little confusion and wasted time there is. Great stage writing. Very gracious targets,Nothing too close and nothing too far. Prepare for any type of weather. Be sure you set time aside to check out the local attractions in Oklahoma City and surrounding communities. Especially an afternoon at the cowboy museum. Some really good restaurants and very hospitable businesses. The most important thing to do is stop by and get a hug from Scarlet at Bullets By scarlet. One of the kindest and most helpful souls you will find in the cowboy action family. 3 1 Quote
Scarlett Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Thanks @oak creek martin! My tip for @T-Square was gonna be bring lots of money - and not just for me! I already get some of his hard earned cash! 😂. There are some neat vendors. More than you’ve seen at the matches here in the South East. ALL weather is possible. The mornings can be chilly and by afternoon it can be hot. Four stages are shot on a rifle range and there’s a concrete floor. In case you want different boots. When you shoot the morning wave, it will be dark when you arrive at the range. Bring a flashlight. I now have “Scarlett’s Lounge” for resting beside my big tent. We have chairs but you can bring your own! 😂 There’s just two rules for the Lounge: No Fussin’ No Whinin’. Plan to hang out at the range (rest up at the lounge). You’ll meet so many wonderful and fun people! A lot of folks you only know on the Wire! You are a really fancy dresser - so enter the costume contest! It’s cool! I’m sure I will think of other stuff. Hugs! Scarlett 6 1 Quote
Kid Rich Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (1) bring enough ammo. (2) bring at least 2 of every gun you may want. (3) bring clothes for hot weather and cold weather, that includes at least 2 pair of boots. (4) make sure you have drinks that will replenish minerals etc. LAST but not least bring PLENTY of ammo. kR PS .Hope to meet you there. 3 1 Quote
Dantankerous Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Shoot as much as you can. Warm up stages, side matches. The shooting is great! And for this, brings LOTS of ammo. The swap meet is full of great stuff so bring cash. Or stuff you have you don't need anymore to sell. Eventually (say 3 weeks before LR takes place) there will be placed in the classified section a "For sale at Land Run" ad where you can advertise your sale items. Go to the evening events. Always fun and well run. Be prepared to make new friends. 5 Quote
Irish Pat Posted January 26 Posted January 26 if you decide to bring items to sell put them on the SASS classifieds ahead of the shoot. Irish ☘️ Pat Quote
Hoss Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Parking is at a premium. Arrive early. Especially the mid-day wave. bring plenty of cash for vendors! best banquet by a long shot! Go early, tour the museum lots of volunteers. Be sure to thank them. Visit the OKC bombing memorial. 3 1 Quote
Diamond Jake Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) Plan lots of time at the range and visit with folks, even those you don't know (yet). With three sets of posses shooting through the days, you might not see the folks shooting in different groups if you don't hang around. Take lots of pictures. I took this picture at the awards banquet in 2022. I didn't know the people, just thought the little girl was so cute. The next year I ran into the family at the lunch area on the range, and gave them the picture. They were so happy to get it. Edited January 26 by Diamond Jake 10 2 Quote
Cemetery Posted January 26 Posted January 26 try to plan to arrive a day early, to site see and just take it easy. Two full days of travel wiped me out. Also try to plan a down day on the return as well. Some how the travel back was more exhausting. also, hydration and electrolytes. bring plenty of hydration packets from the drug store, or wherever, there are also places locally to get these supplies. You can use google maps to look around the neighborhood you'll be staying at to find restaurants, groceries, pharmacies, etc. 2 1 Quote
Dogmeat Dad, SASS #48563L Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Do Not Miss the Opening Ceremony at the National Cowboy Museum on the Wednesday evening before the match. They basically have the museum closed for everyone except for the folks at the match and it is a fantastic place to tour. There are museum staff floating around to answer questions, but you can also just wander. The statuary is just fantastic. You will be back there for the Awards Banquet, but you will not get to wander around as much. I can't say enough good about that place! 6 1 Quote
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Last year tables at the banquet were reserved using a phone app. If you have friends going, reserve a table so you can sit together. Also, leave early for the banquet as parking is limited at the museum. The nearby Chicken Shack is good for a meal. Baums (found all over Oklahoma) has great banana splits. The 5-Stand side match is moderate difficulty and worth shooting. For long range, practice shooting off a bench at 200-yards. Oklahoma weather is similar to Georgia weather so prepare accordingly. However, the area can have ice storms, so give yourself extra travel time in case of severe weather. Some venders will deliver loading supplies to the match, saving you shipping costs. Scarlett is often there and brings powder and bullets. Shooting Fox who makes lead shot and some cast bullets is a local shooter and also delivers to the match. I've bought #7 1/2 shot from him and will be shooting some of it at EOT in a few weeks. 2 1 Quote

Sixgun Seamus Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) +1 on the weather. It goes back to 2018 when Land Run was the SW Regional. First day was near perfect day for shooting. Second day was probably the worst conditions I shot in for cold and rain. Quite a few people didn't even show up on the second day. Most if not all bays have some sort of cover now, but not back then. Prepare for a fantastic, well run fun match. Follow all of the previous advice. See the local sights. Stay away from Kid Rich. He is a bad influence and will warp your mind. Edited January 26 by Sixgun Seamus 2 1 1 Quote
Sixgun Seamus Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) Addendum.... You are already a cowboy with sartorial splendor and acumen. Please continue as such. It's not how you shoot, it's how good you look when you shoot. Edited January 26 by Sixgun Seamus Spelling 2 2 Quote

T-Square Posted January 26 Author Posted January 26 Thanks for all the replies ! Follow-up - The match round count is 120 / 120/ 64+ and the warm-up is 40 / 40 / 16+ = so are we talking 200 / 200 / 150 ? I'll keep an eye out for banquet seating the App - I like meeting new people. There are a few Cowboys & Cowgirls coming from Georgia, per the current list. Definitely going to do the Costume Contest ! The pageantry is an important part of the game to me. I'm having to get all new costumes. I've lost 50 lbs this winter - so even the sheriff does not recognize me. Everyone said bring the Gold - I hope there is a Vendor list. I don't need guns, but everything else is up for consideration ! It is important to support our Vendors too. Extra Boots - That's a great suggestion !! Rain or shine / warm or cold - we'll be prepared. Thanks Scarlett for the invite to the VIP Lounge. Spending time with you and Tommy is always a highlight. Kid Rich, Sixgun Seamus, Cayenne Kay, Scrub Oak Willie - all great partners ! We will see you before Land Run at the various State matches over the season, I'm looking forward to seeing you again ! This match will be the Best ! I hope this thread helps other newbies. 2 1 Quote
T-Square Posted January 26 Author Posted January 26 Scarlett - you are too kind to me, thank you for the very kind word. I'm going to try and meet all 700 Cowboys and Cowgirls and shake their hands. I hear some of the ultra-shooters are a little stand-off-ish. Didn't one of the famous One's decline to have his photo made last year ?! I met the musician Van Morrison once, and he thought a picture would steal part of your soul. At least Van had a legitimate reason !! LOL Super excited for Land Run ! 1 1 Quote
Anvil Al #59168 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) 1. Don't overthink it. Meaning Relax. Don't let nerves get to you. 2. Listen to the stage instructions. ALL OF THEM. Make SURE you understand them. Land Run crew does a great job at writing stages. But see so many shooters talking instead of listening to all the stage instructions. 3. Check and double check all your ammo before you go. Make sure you have it. Don't know how many times folks show up and forgot all their ammo. (and or guns for that matter) 4. Attend all the events you can. But also. Don't overdo and get too tired to shoot. I have done that on days we shoot late. I get bored at the camper/hotel. So go ahead and go to the range. By the time it is our time to shoot. I have walked around so much that by the 2nd stage I am wore out and it hurt my performance. 5. Have FUN. This should probably be #1. I mean really. That's what you are there for. Will also add. Bring comfortable footwear. There is a lot of walking. And as others have said. Bring rain gear, it can be hot one day and cold the next. You never know. So be prepared to any kind of weather. Edited January 26 by Anvil Al #59168 2 1 Quote
Dantankerous Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I think someone already mentioned the vendors. Bring money or plastic and support those vendors. They do a great job and sell most excellent cowboy items. I always usually spend too much and never regret it. 3 1 Quote

It’s much easier to take ammo home than it is to find some if you run short!🤠 I tear down all my guns, main match and backups, and clean them. After I’m finished I shoot a match with them to make sure everything works, I shoot smokeless. I think everything else has been covered, remember Rule #2 HAVE FUN!! Randy 3 1 Quote

The way I figure, One batch for me, and One batch for the unfortunate Cowboy / Cowgirl who arrived without theirs's. I hear that happens often. Of course, it's 44-40 with real Goex and genuine BP 12 ga shotgun shells to match ! Any one have any thoughts on extra gun parts? What if your you throw a spring, break a lever, or drop a hammer? Are there gunsmiths on-site for emergencies? I'll bring at least one set of back-ups just in case - but what kind of gunsmith services will be on-site? I saw an engraver in the 2024 photos. 1 Quote

I don't recall from our brief encounter at the 2024 Ides of March, but if you shoot a 1866, keep a spare loading gate in your kit. Holli has had hers fail on her a couple of times over the years, and always at a big match! It's a quick fix, if you have the part.... Quote

Sometimes even that isn’t enough. I think it was 3 years ago I broke 2 rifles. Fortunately Reno Mustang let borrow his to finish the match. 🤠 Randy Quote
