Subdeacon Joe Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) SOS is just a really, really thick Cream of Beef Soup on big, flat croutons. Edited January 23 by Subdeacon Joe 3 Quote

If I had to have some point, it might be, in a diner SOS will cost you $20. In a restaurant Hearty Cream of Beef Soup on Jumbo Croutons is $45. Oh! From the 1916 Army Manual: I'm not sure of the year of this one: 3 Quote

Charlie Harley, #14153 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Our cooks were really good at the gravy part. They’d take just about any leftover meat, chop it up fine, and put it in a thick gravy that was real peppery. You just knew it had to begin as flour and fat and not plopped out of a can. The only problem was the toast. It was tasteless, not well textured, and detracted from the gravy. I asked the chief cook if there was any way they could make biscuits of the same caliber as their fine gravy. About two weeks later while filing into the mess hall she pulled me aside and said, “I got something for you.” It was a breakfast of SOS worthy of being called biscuits and gravy! 3 1 Quote
Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 My Mom would make SOS for the family meal from time to time. Dad would always say, “It’s good, but just not quite as good as the Army’s.” 5 Quote

I gave up trying to explain unless the listener had been in an equally shitty place and just opened a C-rat pack with those magic peaches. Whip out that P-38, open the can, and relish the nectar of peaches and syrup quenching an exceedingly deep need for normalcy. I’m choking up just thinking about them. 5 2 Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 My mom changed up the recipe when we were kids. She’d brown up a mess of ground beef and add in a can of onion soup, no flour, cook it down and serve it poured over biscuits cut in half and buttered. It was delicious and I fix it myself every now and then. 1 3 Quote
MizPete Posted January 25 Posted January 25 I have not seen chipped beef in stores in decades. I still have one of the little glasses it used to be packaged in. I do agree with Charlie Harley about the peppery gravy. 2 Quote

I do agree with Charlie Harley about the peppery gravy. Good googly mooglies. Amazon has it. Four jars for $33. That's $8 and a quarter a jar. For two and a half ounces of meat. Walmart has it for $14.50 a jar. Or you can get the four pack for $34. So it's a dollar cheaper to get the four pack at Amazon. I had no idea that this stuff was made of Kobe beef tenderloin. 14.50 a jar is $93 and change a pound. Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 Walmart Hormel Dried beef, 2.25oz is $4. Walmart Buddig 2 oz lunch meat is 82 cents. Amazon Old Trapper Beef Jerky 21 oz for $20 (that's chopped and formed disks of dried beef). And jerky works fine for creamed beef. 1 Quote
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 (edited) Stouffer's creamed chipped beef, two slices of white toast, salt, pepper, Tabasco sauce (or not), coffee and OJ/AJ mix by, and you're of to a decent start. All in under 8 minutes and easy to clean up. Edited January 25 by Forty Rod SASS 3935 1 Quote

Says it is $6.90. That $15 stuff is gluten free. I guess that's why it's $15 instead of 7. Personally, I thought cow was already gluten free. Edited January 25 by Alpo 1 Quote
Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 (edited) Gluten free is an economic term for cost more. kinda like “plant based”. You can buy regular popcorn for X$/bag, or plant based popcorn for XX$/bag. Edited January 25 by Pulp, SASS#28319 2 1 Quote

Some other brands are chopped and formed, but I’ve never gotten Old Trapper that wasn’t actual strips of dehydrated, spiced beef, usually cut to bite sized pieces. 1 Quote

Quote Enjoy supporting a Scout when you enjoy your s'mores popcorn purchase. Bring the delicious chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker flavors of a traditional s'more home ... without the sticky fingers. Includes one 7oz bag of s'mores popcorn. The reality is, you donate thirty bucks and get an appreciative bag o' popcorn. Good cause... good popcorn... but the reality - again - is that Girl Scout Cookies are a better deal. I'm a BSA Scouter... and I buy GS Cookies. Edit: I'm not allowed to eat 'em... but I still buy 'em and give 'em away. Oh, popcorn too. Edited January 25 by Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 1 Quote
