DeaconKC Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Good afternoon folks, temp has dropped 10 degrees in the last hour and the strong storms predicted started about 15 minutes ago. Supposed to hit 25F here tonight, it was 72 here at lunchtime, with tomorrow in the 30s. Then it will be pushing 80 by Friday. Wow. Great day at Church today, my Great Nephew preached this afternoon, he will turn 14 next month and is growing like crazy. Eating like a starving elephant too. He's my shooting buddy, maybe we can hit the range later this week. Gonna get off of here and put some paint on the railcar I have been working on, it is nearing completion. I have so much *GRUMP* that I can't even express it. On the other hand, I put in an order at the LGS for a Ruger Alaskan in .454. Now I need to find a cowboy holster maker to make me a rig for it. Some of the ammo I got the other day is loaded with Pyrodex. I won’t shoot that stuff, so I’ll need to set up my Frankford Arsenal Piledriver so’s I can salvage the components. I’ll do that when I get back from n this next weekend’s match! Tommorow, I’ll start final check on the guns I plan to take. It’ll give me something to do while it’s cold and rainy! Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted March 19 Posted March 19 - 10 C here in Ottawa, at the moment. We had a thaw, rain, freezing rain etc. for a few days and lost a lot of snow, but winter came back! With a vengance! Oh well, the sun is starting to overpower the cold air and causing the roads, sidewalks and driveways to warm and melt whatever snow or ice is on them. We just have to keep an eye on the creeks and rivers for signs of blockages that lead to flooding. The main river that runs through Ottawa, is the Rideau, (part of the Rideau Canal System) and the City is currently clearing the ice to prevent ice jams and flooding if/when the real run off begins from the tributaries and the forested areas surrounding the city. 3 Quote

DeaconKC Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Good evening folks, well Today's plans went down the tubes last night as some friends called and wound up with my wife heading to their house just as they called an ambulance for the husband of of friends. On arriving at the hospital his blood was dangerously low and he got air evacuated to Little Rock. My wife got his wife home then had to pack for a trip she was leaving on this morning. Our friend's only son was in Florida and trying to get home. So I took our friend's wife to Little Rock today, took it off from work, and their son finally made it in about 2PM. He was wiped out too, but he and I get along well too, so we will work out getting Carol back and forth to the hospital til Ed is home. Had some dinner and now gonna watch some TV, possibility of an old Western is high on the list of possibilities. 3 Quote

I managed to shoot three whole stages over the two day event! I didn’t fall down, drop any guns, or shoot myself or anyone else! I had lots of help and support and I had a great time! I made the mistake of taking my practice ammo and my match guns, so the first stage I shot produced several failures to fire. It was pretty taxing, physically and I was ridiculously slow! I retired and helped with posse duties the rest of the day, rather than get frustrated with more equipment malfunctions. Sunday, I muddled through two stages. I tuned up my rifle and pistols to fire the ammunition and that part worked pretty well. I had a few misses and some trouble manipulating my guns due the lack of strength and stamina and I was slap wore out by the time I put the last gun down! (Now I know what I need to work on) The weather was great and the match was a hoot, as usual! I spent most of the (supposed to be four hour) trip home talking to Forty Rod on the phone, (hands free Bluetooth on my radio) and made it home much quicker, but safely! I got a call from Tennessee Stud today. We still talk often. He was my accountant and tax preparer until he retired. He’s currently battling cancer (he didn’t specify what kind) and going to a major cancer treatment center for treatment. He said to tell everyone that cared that he often thinks of many of ya’s and wishes he could get back on the Wire so he could visit with his friends. He says to tell you all howdy! Now that I’ve had a go at shooting a stage or two, I have a good idea of what I need to do to get back in shape. I hope that the stationary bike and more activity will contribute to my regaining some semblance of balance to go with improving strength and endurance. So now we get to the GRUMP!! GAS PRICES HAVE GONE UP MORE THAN A DOLLAR!! It cost me half again what I spent the last trip up to Ponderosa Pines!! 4 1 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted March 28 Author Posted March 28 Frost warning in the area tonight! It was 86f here yesterday. I picked up one of my cap ‘n’ ball guns from my gunsmith yesterday. It has probably had fifteen thousand rounds through it over the past eighteen years between matches, practice, and experiments. It needed a new bolt and hand and spring. The bolt had worn and the notches in the cylinder were pretty battered, so we replaced it too. It was one of my main match guns for all of that time and I had never noticed that it was a “frankengun”!! The frame and grip are Unerti, but it’s got a Pietta barrel and charging lever! I bought it second hand in 2005, just for kicks! I’d sold my converted Remington cap guns in favor of a pair of ‘75 Remington copies. When the urge to go Frontiersman hit me, I bought a couple more 1860 replicas and sent all three guns to be slicked and tricked out. My gunsmith looked at the barrel and saw Filli Pietta and ordered the parts and when they arrived, they wouldn’t fit. Fortunately, I had a new Unerti cylinder and we were able to get the right small parts. I finally got the last of my chores from last weekend’s trip done this afternoon. I had put almost everything away, but I had left the 10ga out after cleaning it and my bedroll was still sitting in the living room, so I put them both away and drug out the tumbler and dumped my brass in it to start the “recycling” process. My major GRUMP this evening is that I broke a pedal on my stationary bike yesterday and I have to buy new pedals for it before I can get back on it! Just when I feel like I’m starting to make some progress and I’m getting motivated to ride the damned thing!😡 Gonna’ be Monday before I can get the pedals. GRUMBLEGROUSEGRIPE!! Doc Shapiro Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Let's see.... Bought a Ruger Alaskan in .454. Bought the wife a gravel bike (waiting on parts for proper fit). Going to order a weather station, and a new set of headphones for listening to music. Thankfully, got a nice bonus today to cover all this. And need to get the will redone. Skis got the storage wax and are put up for the season. And Single Malt Sal informed me that I'm taking her out for brunch in the morning. On the other hand, the quote for steel siding for the house and outbuilding is absolutely stupid expensive. So much for the no maintenance option. He's working out another possibility to try to get to half the price of the steel, which will leave enough for a kitchen remodel during winter when it's slow for him. And I need to send the state a bunch of money for taxes, which will be covered by the federal return if they'll get around to processing it. I won't be retiring soon 1 1 Quote

At least I know that when it does pick up again, we will be back. Neuropathy in my feet has progressed enough I am probably gonna have to quit competing as I am getting more unsteady, especially on rough or uneven ground. It really perked her up. I'm sorry to hear about your health issue and I can sympathize. I still get out in spite of my bad knees, using a cane and sitting as much as practical with my cane/stool. I sometimes have to fight off my Pards, who want to carry my long guns to the firing line. This is me March 21 at Winter Camp. While most ancestors seem to have been in the Union Army, I discovered my namesake was Pvt. in the 27th Georgia, so, ornery rebel that I am, that's one of my personas. 3 1 Quote
DeaconKC Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Howdy guys, pretty day here, hit 78, sunny with a nice breeze and the humidity hasn't crawled up on us yet. Worked a bit on the loading bench, clearing off the accumulation. Then worked on some game hobby painting for a while. G'Nephew Lucas came by tonight on his ancient Kawasaki 4 wheeler and was having trouble with it, so we figured it out and I taught him how to fix it. He did a good job, listened well and got it running. Followed him home to make sure he made it okay. He's gonna be 14 this month and the way he's growing will probably taller than his Dad, who is 6'4". Not too much to grump about today, so I just gotta grump on general principle! 3 Quote

We’ve had the grandson over since Friday while he’s on spring break. He’ll be going home this evening. He’s a lot of help and fun to have around, but he’s quiet. He doesn’t get that from me!! I’ve spent the last couple of days in the gun room, sorting out and organizing a bunch of stuff that I have been given. One friend has decided that he will no longer shoot Black Powder and he gave me several hundred rounds of .38s, .45 Colt and Schofield, and a couple of boxes of 12ga, all loaded, labeled with data, and neatly boxed. Then I had another friend who has decided that he will no longer shoot smokeless! I got three pounds of new powder, 500+ rounds of .357 brass, a big bag of 9mm, a mixed bag of bottle necked rifle brass, and a couple tins of percussion caps. He also says he won’t be shooting cap ‘n’ ball in the future. I’ve been sorting brass and tumbling it for three days and I’m not done yet! Going to lunch today with a couple of my band mates. We get together when we get a chance and try to keep caught up. These two are also guys that I went to high school with! I hate that the grandson is leaving today and I’m having to do laundry this morning in order to have clothes to wear to lunch!! I reckon that that’s enough for me to GRUMP about! IF’N YER GONNA BE ON THE LAWN, AT LEAST MOW IT WHILE YOU’RE LOLLYGAGGIN’ AROUND!! 4 Quote
