Alpo Posted January 22 Posted January 22 As seldom is we have cold wet white stuff. I just came back in from draining the dog. That was fun. About two inches deep on the driveway and she handled that okay. Then I stepped her off into the grass and it was about six inches deep. Or maybe she just sank down six inches because it was sitting on top of the grass. I don't know. I do know she did not like it. And immediately got back on the driveway. I take her out into the street and we start walking down the street and we go about 20 feet maybe and she goes up into the neighbor's yard and pees, so we quickly made an about face and went back to the house. But it's 7:30. Sun went down over 2 hours ago. It should be pitch black. Full moon was what - 2 days ago, three? Still pretty full. And with everything covered in a layer of white. It wasn't noon day bright outside, but it was light enough to read a newspaper. Reflection from the moon and the stars. Never even considered that. I learned something new today. 6 1 Quote
watab kid Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) yes , midwinter i get a glow though the windows at midnight if the moon is full , can be distracting to sleep , because of our lot location , the south orientation of the house being near full glass in a lot of the rooms and shear curtains .........you get used to it tho , oh , i do get nice solar gain in the mid day tho Edited January 22 by watab kid 1 Quote

See, and if you never got snow, you’ld never have learned that. Thank the Yankees who left the door open, I assure you it wasn’t me. 5 Quote

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 A winter storm broke snowfall records across the Gulf Coast, where snow is so rare that most cities don’t own plows. Officials said the storm had killed at least 10 people and caused hundreds of car crashes. Airlines canceled thousands of flights. In cities like Houston and New Orleans, many residents spent the day reveling in the most snow they had ever seen. Frosty beaches and a snowball fight in the in the French Quarter: See photos from across the region. 3 Quote
Pat Riot Posted January 22 Posted January 22 It’s pretty ain’t it, Alpo? One of my favorite winter time things as a kid was to go into the woods at night after a snow and find a stump or log to sit on and just sit and watch. This works day or not but after a while you’ll start seeing animals moving about…not all the time, but it’s probably the most calming thing ever. My wife and I are thinking that it’s about time to buy a house. We live in town now but I would like a house in the country near a mess of woods that I can hike about in. By the way, never eat yellow snow. Also, you should try and enjoy one time honored Yankee tradition. Writing your name in the snow. 2 3 Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Son and daughter-in-law near Minneapolis had -21 below yesterday morning. They have two big Akita dowgs that generally love the cold and snow. He was going to turn them out into the fenced off back yard. They'd poke their noses through the door and refuse to go out. Quote
Linn Keller, SASS 27332, BOLD 103 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I constantly delight in learning new things, and the concept of "Draining the Dog" is one of them! Thank you for that! I've known those times of magical light, those memories are from the days of my "Beardless Youth" ... Quote
Alpo Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 2 hours ago, Pat Riot said: It’s pretty ain’t it, Alpo This was the first picture I took yesterday when I found out about the snow. I tried to frame the same picture just now. Close. You can just barely see a piece of the ladder. Standing at the door to my back porch looking off to the east. That same naked tree, without the dirty window and the screen in the way. And then looking off to the West, through my neighbor's backyard and to the houses across the street from them. Yes, it is pretty. And the dog stood right beside me while I was taking those last two pictures. I could not get her to step off the porch into the snow. I don't know whether she's going to bust or just give up and pee all over my house. But she's old, like me, and also like me she has to go pee at least once an hour. And she hasn't since about 5:30 last night. Took her out the front door this morning. Taking my little baby steps because I did not want to end up lying on my back. Walked over to the edge of the driveway and tried to get her to go up into the grass. No. Went back down behind the truck to the street. The layer of ice between the end of the driveway and the edge of the street was at least two feet wide. And then the street looked slippery. So I did not attempt to step off of the driveway onto the street. Don't want to end up lying on my back. Tried to go off into the front yard next to the driveway. She would not. So we go back up to the house and we go to the other side of the driveway and I actually got her to walk out in the snow with me. She wouldn't pee. She did not like it. Y'all can have this crap. If one of you wants to come down with a shovel and a big truck and take it back with you, you are more than welcome. Got a text this morning. Because of the unprecedented snowfall, the streets in the bridges are still closed to anything except emergency traffic. Basically the town is shut down. Thursday midday at the earliest? I don't think she can hold it for another day and a half. 1 Quote
Sedalia Dave Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Alpo, take a broom and clear off a 4' X 4' square of grass for Worthless to use as a bathroom. 3 Quote
Rip Snorter Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I shoveled paths and pooping grounds for Mom's tiny dogs years back and still do it to this day for my oldest boy. They use them - all 3 dogs prefer them when the snow is deep. 1 Quote
