Subdeacon Joe Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 SpaceX says its Starship spacecraft broke up midflight as videos of debris emerge online https://search.app/vNM9ayJYyMSjnwqy7 Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, shared a video of the debris on X, writing: "Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed!" Musk later added: "Preliminary indication is that we had an oxygen/fuel leak in the cavity above the ship engine firewall that was large enough to build pressure in excess of the vent capacity." Musk added that the company would makes some changes including more fire supression but that the company is not making any changes to plans for upcoming launches.
Cypress Sun Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 An "unplanned disassembly". That's the most expensive fireworks show they'll ever see! Musk can afford it though. Gotta wonder if any of the debris made it to the ground.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 As Forrest Gump said,”54it happens!”
Rye Miles #13621 Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 They saved the first booster anyway https://abcnews.go.com/US/spacex-loses-starship-space-catches-booster-launch-tower/story?id=117767604
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 They did save some dimes there. Booster is said to cost $69 million and gets refurbed for about $8 million. the rocket however, can’t put the debris back together.

They will figure out what mods need to be made, and fix it for future flights. That is the nature of build a little, test a little, fly some more. I had wondered if it was some type of anomaly or if the ship veered off course and the Flight Termination System (FTS) destroyed it. At least they got enough telemetry data to get a good fix on the problem. Ad Astra, SpaceX!
