Saw an unfired 1866 44 special today. The side plates were longer than I had seen before. My guess is that it is an older version. Anyone seen one of these?IMG_2469.thumb.jpeg.f57583b75783b9b6d495fc6fb1a08e20.jpegIMG_2469.thumb.jpeg.f57583b75783b9b6d495fc6fb1a08e20.jpegIMG_2468.thumb.jpeg.62f4f78833fb2cd1ffefd509ebf6309d.jpegIMG_2471.thumb.jpeg.33bc3ee082c44f63453fa117f7a7714f.jpeg

It’s not plastic it’s discolored for some reason.

it's either the plastic film is still on there that they started doing some years back, or else it's residue on the brass from that film.  Try to peel it off. And the dimensions look normal to me.

Pics show no lever safety and normal carrier length with no cutout in front of the carrier. Looks like a brand new rifle to me. The older versions also have a larger diameter firing pin extension than the new rifles. The firing pin extension  is not visible in the pics.

PLUS ONE for Abilene and Abilene Slim

Normal regular standard 1866 that still has the shipping film on the sides or the receiver or glue residue from the edges.  I'm guessing the film is still there.  And yes, I've seen that before.  Pretty common with new 1866s.

Appears that you can even see air/dirt bubbles under the plastic film.

The question was not about the finish but the length of the side plates.

Mark in the photos where you think the side plates limits are so we can reply better.

The older ones had a side plate with the loading gate protruding further in the frame and the newer guns it don't.

If the serial number starts with a H or W it's a newer rifle .

From what I can see , It Is a Older Rifle.

CT date code means it was made in 2018. And that is definitely plastic protection sheet still on the receiver.

i guess i need to pull mine out and look at it , im not certain when i bought it [new] but that would be pretty close i think to the date - plastic is long gone as is the shine , mines acquiring the nice patina of age , but i love shooting it above all the others oi own ,
