Perro Del Diablo Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Just replaced factory springs in my 41 mag. Of course after using pure brute stupid force I was able to get new mainspring in pall. Soon after saw video where a dollar store fork used to to assist in compressing the new one. Fore head slap moment occured. 1 5 Quote
Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L Posted January 15 Posted January 15 knowledge is power no matter how you attain it. I, too, learned this trick after the fact 3 Quote
Pat Riot Posted January 15 Posted January 15 (edited) I have done that too. I made this tube with slots cut into it for compressing the spring with the mainspring seat and getting both parts far enough compressed to insert a 1/16” punch in the hammer strut to hold everything together. EDIT: I came up with this tube after bouncing a hammer spring off my forehead one day. It saved me explaining the stupid looking bruise…again…and many times since. Eyesa Horg Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Yup, on the forehead slap! Before I learned of the fork trick years ago, I used use the small needle nose vise grips with jaws just somewhat open when the pliers were closed. 5 1 Quote

Shawnee Hills Posted January 15 Posted January 15 You guys are making this too hard. Clamp your mainspring seat in the vise so you can push on it from the side, install mainspring on strut, line up spring and strut to seat slot, push and pin the assembly. Easy peasy. 2 1 Quote

Yul Lose Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I cut a slot in a conduit clamp and use a rare earth magnet that keeps the shoe in place should it try to fly off. 3 1 Quote
