Alpo Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I just read this in the news. Interesting. But I don't think they can do it. Legally. For years people have been hanging out at Starbucks. And now they have new upper management and the policy has changed. You want to be in the store? Buy something. You want to use the restroom? Buy something. Now it's that second one that I don't think will fly. Several years ago Burger King got sued because they had a policy of if you wanted to use their restroom you had to buy something. The course decided if you have a public restroom, anybody can use it. Whether they're a customer or not. So you can have a restroom only for store employees, and have this nice big sign that says NO PUBLIC RESTROOM. But if anybody that is not an employee can use it, that makes it a public restroom and anyone can use it. Customer or not. I have not heard that that law has been revoked or rescinded or repealed or whatever the hell you do with a law. So people sitting at the table tip tapping on their laptop checking their email and stuff - yeah, they can tell them to buy something or get out. But use the restroom? I don't think so. Quote
Rip Snorter Posted January 14 Posted January 14 You mean people still go to Starbucks? If I ever did, even once, it must have been 18 or 20 years ago. 1 1 Quote

Pat Riot Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I think that’s fair. It’s their facility, not the public’s. One of the reasons I hated Starbucks was their penchant for allowing mooches and scum to lounge about when paying customers couldn’t find a place to sit. 4 Quote
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 That decision is only in force in Florida. Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted January 14 Posted January 14 In most places it's legal for restaurants to restrict restrooms to customers only, with an exception for medical necessity. Even in California, if I'm reading it correctly. 2 Quote

Rye Miles #13621 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 So now the employees have to deal with telling people to leave if they don’t buy anything! It should never have been a policy to begin with! Liberal ideas almost always backfire!🙄 2 Quote

Yul Lose Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Lots of places out here have closed their restrooms to the public. In high homeless areas you really have to search to find some place to take a leak. A couple of local Starbucks have closed their walk in restaurant part and offer drive thru service only. My wife was in a Sprouts grocery store last week and had to use the restroom and there was a woman completely naked taking a spunge bath at the sink using paper towels. A bagel shop that I frequent has closed off its restrooms to the public because of the homeless traffic. 2 Quote
Tom Bullweed Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I buy their hot tea, that is about half the cost of their coffee. Good tea and I figure they lose on the deal.... Quote

Warden Callaway Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Our oldest son was addicted to Starbucks. Had to have it ever morning even if he couldn't afford gas for his car. When I was a kid, the only public restroom I knew of was in the court house. Quote

Pat Riot Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Many businesses in Orange County, CA kept homeless and dirtbags out of their restrooms by installing keypad locks on their restroom doors. I also recall seeing this in Portland, OR. If you want to use the restroom you need to be a customer or you don’t get the combination. Question: If a filthy dirty homeless guy knocked on your door and asked to use your bathroom would you let him in? Quote

Eyesa Horg Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Locally we've had a couple gas/convenience stores lock the bathroom to keep the druggies out. Some cities have free Narcan dispensing machines and buildings with free supplies. Somehow that will cut down on drug use! Quote

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 (edited) My closest grocery, Fry's (Kroeger puppet), has a space about 800 square feet right inside the north entrance. It's an inconvenient thing that has to be gone around to get directly to a portion of the store. It's an inconvenience, but I suspect Starbucks pays a lot to Fry's for the use of that space. I have been in that store at all hours of the day and night and I HAVE NEVER SEEN MORE THAN THREE OF FOUR PEOPLE at the dozen or so tables in the area. Someone is making money off of that but I don't think id offsets the people who will drive a few blocks to Safeway where there is a smaller but much more used no name coffee shop sort of out of the way to traffic. Question: If a filthy dirty homeless guy knocked on your door and asked to use your bathroom would you let him in? I’ve caught them using my spa before and now I have to keep the cover locked. Their feces, toilet paper and other trash washes down from their camp when it rains and we have to clean it up. They search through our trash cans looking for bottles and cans to recycle. Calling the authorities doesn't do any good anymore because municipalities can now kick them off of public property and that leaves private property for them to land on and build their camps. During the high wind watch a couple of months ago one of them had a pretty large campfire going and I called 911 and the fire department showed up and put it out. I haven’t seen them start a campfire lately so maybe they’re using some other method to cook their food now. 3 Quote
Crazy Gun Barney, SASS #2428 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 The "buy something or get out" statement doesn't work. If you buy a small coffee, exactly how many minutes of sitting at a table does that get you? Until it is gone? Lots of people can nurse a coffee for hours, especially if it is either that or actually have to pay for their own internet or office space. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Reminds me of local cafes. They always attract a group of loafers, sometimes retired farmers, others tradesmen. Thinking of one place where the men took up a table all day long. One would leave and another set down. They may buy a cup of coffee but often eat breakfast at home. One was known to go home, eat his lunch with his wife and watch "his story" on TV and then go back to the cafe. They started to get loud and obnoxious. The owner finally ran them off. 2 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I’ve never been in a Starbucks! I don’t drink coffee and for damned sure wouldn’t pay what they charge for it! I HAVE gone through the drive through when Schoolmarm wanted one of their products. Waited 20 minutes to get through the line, (fortunately, I was NOT in a hurry) and the coffee was cool by the time she got it! Won’t get fooled again!! Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 16 Posted January 16 We won't do business with McDonald's with one exception, Mary would use their bathroom in Hudson, Missouri and get (then) 50 cent senior coffee. She'd be on a long haul delivery and Huston would be about halfway point. And the place was easy on and easy off the highway. 1 Quote
