Buckshot Bear Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Growing Spanish Moss Tips & Hints This stuff ain't natural to Oz, will it grow in full sunlight or does it need dappled light? How often do you water it? Is it slow growing or grows pretty fast? Quote
Cholla Posted January 13 Posted January 13 It hangs in the sun on Live Oaks put the amount of sun and shade will change during the day. The big issue is plenty of humidity. Low humidity, it will die. Check the humidity in Northern Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. It grows best in coastal areas with lots of humidity. I lived in Mississippi and Florida longer than I carried to but the Spanish Moss was cool to look at but it also harbors bugs. 1 1 Quote

It can and will overwhelm Live Oaks and may cause the tree to slowly die. It grows fairly fast. I think that you'll end up regretting introducing it to your area. Like Cholla stated, it harbors chiggers/red bugs (nasty little burrowing mites). 2 1 Quote
Shawnee Hills Posted January 13 Posted January 13 If it’s not natural to the area then please don’t introduce it. Those introductions tend to result in the plant becoming invasive and causing widespread problems in the future. 2 2 Quote
Alpo Posted January 13 Posted January 13 One would think, between the house cats and the rabbits and the camels, Aussies would absolutely not want to bring something in to their country that didn't belong. "Oh, but it will be so pretty." 2 Quote
Buckshot Bear Posted January 13 Author Posted January 13 Its sold everywhere down here, but mostly folks buy it and it dies. Its not native to Australia, is this the same species that you guys have that is for sale down here? https://rootdplants.com.au/products/tillandsia-usneoides-spanish-moss Quote

We don't learn, most garden nurseries and hardware (garden) stores sell it wrapped on a pine cone (another non indigenous thing here) and it isn't cheap!! - https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/SpanishMoss Quote

Plant material should be disposed of appropriately." Yep. Dispose of appropriately. Throw it in a fire. But be shirtless when you're doing it, because everybody needs to get chiggers at least once in their life. 3 Quote

It will not grow in Arizona. Quote
Cholla Posted January 13 Posted January 13 So, are you going to start listening to old Alabama LPs while you watch the Spanish Moss grow? Quote

watab kid Posted January 13 Posted January 13 i have no problem with stuff that grows natural in trees , we do have a vine here that kills its host tho , but that which grows on buildings is very distructive and should be removed Quote
Sedalia Dave Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Spanish Moss requires the relative humidity to remain above 50%. Below that level it will eventually die. 1 Quote
Pat Riot Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Spanish moss makes great fire starter. That’s all it’s good for. That crap is like Kudzu. Once it takes hold it’s a b***h to get rid of. 1 2 Quote
