Growing Spanish Moss Tips & Hints

This stuff ain't natural to Oz,  will it grow in full sunlight or does it need dappled light?

How often do you water it?

Is it slow growing or grows pretty fast?

It hangs in the sun on Live Oaks put the amount of sun and shade will change during the day. The big issue is plenty of humidity. Low humidity, it will die. Check the humidity in Northern Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. It grows best in coastal areas with lots of humidity. I lived in Mississippi and Florida longer than I carried to but the Spanish Moss was cool to look at but it also harbors bugs.

It can and will overwhelm Live Oaks and may cause the tree to slowly die. It grows fairly fast. I think that you'll end up regretting introducing it to your area. Like Cholla stated, it harbors chiggers/red bugs (nasty little burrowing mites).

If it’s not natural to the area then please don’t introduce it.  Those introductions tend to result in the plant becoming invasive and causing widespread problems in the future.

One would think, between the house cats and the rabbits and the camels, Aussies would absolutely not want to bring something in to their country that didn't belong.

We don't learn, most garden nurseries and hardware (garden) stores sell it wrapped on a pine cone (another non indigenous thing here) and it isn't cheap!! -

"Control

By hand

Spanish moss is easy to remove from the host plant though accessing plants may be difficult if they are growing in tall trees. Plant material should be disposed of appropriately."

Yep. Dispose of appropriately. Throw it in a fire.

But be shirtless when you're doing it, because everybody needs to get chiggers at least once in their life. B)

That looks like what I see in the South. It will not grow in Arizona.

So, are you going to start listening to old Alabama LPs while you watch the Spanish Moss grow?

i have no problem with stuff that grows natural in trees , we do have a vine here that kills its host tho , but that which grows on buildings is very distructive and should be removed

Spanish Moss requires the relative humidity to remain above 50%. Below that level it will eventually die.

Spanish moss makes great fire starter. That’s all it’s good for. That crap is like Kudzu. Once it takes hold it’s a b***h to get rid of.
