Pat Riot Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I learned a new term today. Thought I would share it. Doomscrolling There is also another term called “Doomsurfing” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomscrolling A few years back I realized that I drove to and from work listening to talk radio. When I was at work, between work duties, I was constantly looking at news and reading about every bad thing available. There never seemed to be anything in the way of good news. When it came it was quickly overshadowed by something dreadful or despicable. I became sick of it! It affected my attitude. I found myself worrying about things that I could not control. I felt angry and lived in a gray haze of simmering anger. My feelings, angst and anger affected others. Others that I cared about. One day I was listening to yet another story of doom and gloom followed by an endorsement for buying something I never knew I needed or wanted and it hit me. “I am a dupe. I’m buying into their anger and trepidation and they’re profiting on it! Screw them!” I switched stations on the radio. I stopped going directly to news feeds at work and at home on the Internet. I downloaded music apps to listen to on my helmet Bluetooth and I literally quit listening to talk radio, the news and commercial radio. I cancelled my cable subscription and closed myself off from the drama and the BS. Oh, I still looked at news, but I did it on my terms. I have news emails from Epoch Times and 1440. I pick and choose what I want to read or care about. I follow the weather on apps and I pay zero attention to sports. I do follow Congress and the Supreme Court, but I don’t dwell on it. I don’t allow the NRA or any other pro gun or conservative groups manipulate me. Life is too darn short! The reason I am bringing this up? I just wanted to let my Pards know that life is too spectacular, miraculous and wonderful to allow it to be stripped away by people that don’t deserve your attention or your money. Sometimes one just has to say “Enough!” I yield the rest of my time to the good people I appreciate in the Saloon. I gotta go work out. It relieves stress, ya know. 4 2 Quote
Boggus Deal #64218 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Leaving Facebook was the best thing I’ve done in years. This and a couple other like forums are the only “social” media I’m on. I, too, use 1440 and Epoch Times. 1 Quote
Chantry Posted January 8 Posted January 8 The 24/7 Bad "News" cycle and political "discussion boards" are definitely not good for one's mental health and can be toxic. They are also not honest, most tell their audience what it wants to hear, which isn't always objective or even the truth Farcebook is what you make of it, I've unfollowed, but not deleted some family and friends and I tend to alert/hide on many items. For me, Farcebook is a pleasant diversion full of funny memes. 2 Quote

They just don't respond to call, text or email. 2 Quote

Strangely enough, I wrote this to a very old friend (one of the last) yesterday. My friend, it is going to be a bumpy road, but I think for the next four years, a better ride, significant time frame at our age, things will be more to our taste. My recollection is that your kids ages are not far off mine . You may recall Jim Henson's brilliant Fraggle Rock. The Gorgs are a model, their own kingdom - macro or micro, create an environment that is as good as you can make it, customized. Obviously, we have the significant advantage of property space here in MT as a buffer, but there is also mental space. Other than the obvious need to decompress with a spouse, wipe the day's crap off on the doormat, when you enter. Reduce the TV news, even the computer as sleep time approaches. Gorgville, a private refuge once you cross the threshold. Can't claim to make it work every day, bur it does often help. 1 Quote
