Bugged out twice during the 2017 Tubbs Fire and once during the 2020 Glass Fire - no loss of anything, thank God - but other than answering texts from my brothers all my attention was on the updates about the fires.

I’m thinking there’s folks on here that don’t go to any other sites. They could be hunkered down in a hotel or with friends and family.

Our power was shut off at about 10:00 and according to my wife’s weather station the highest wind speed so far has been 73 mph. No fires down this way yet. We’ve had 2/10ths of an inch of rain so far this “wet” season.

Just got the news that a friend of ours who retired to go live up there and take care of his aging parents lost his house and everything in it. There are quite a few CAS pards up in the vicinity of the fires.

So much damage from these fire storms.  A horrible start to the new year for way too many people.

I am maybe 10 miles from the Eaton fire.  Far enough that my worst worry is smoke and ashfall.  This is what it looked like from my front yard last night at 10:30.

This morning my daughter said they were about 6 miles from the Pasdena fire.  They had the car loaded up and ready to go in case they got an evacuation order.  I haven't heard anything since then.   6 miles away and the wind blowing 100 mph my way? I think I'd head out to somewhere safe until I heard it was safe to go back.  I'd be afraid I'd get caught in an evacuation stampede/logjam if I waited to be told it was time to go.  Hey, I've watched disaster movies.  :D  I guess I ought to check back in with her.

Then again, I live in Missouri.  When the tornado sirens go off, we step outside to see if we can see one.

Y'all stay safe out there.

Angus

Been loaded to go a couple of times with wildfires near - worst time on three sides only a few miles out.  Never had to flee, and out here, no traffic problem, population is thin on the ground.  Worked for a few years advising folks on reducing risks of wildfire and have done what I can on my own place.  One useful souvenir from those days is a Go Bag, 14"x15". a useful starting point. I have two extras - free for the first two who reply. PM an address, I'll stick 'em in envelopes & mail them.  One gone.

Does your alias have anything to do with you being fenced in with barb wire?  All kidding aside, Prayers up for everyone out there. Stay safe Crazy.

That angle sure makes it seem like it, doesn't it.  That is taken facing north west.  I live next to a gravel pit, which is lined with barbed wire more to keep the coyotes in than to keep people out I think.  Doesn't work by the way.

Aside from the fence along the side of the gravel pit, I have pretty much an unobstructed view due west.  In the picture, kind of obstructed by the tree you can see the profile of the buildings in Los Angeles.

That fire pic looks extremely disconcerting. Figured the fence was an adjoining property!

When we were ordered to evacuate in 2007 we got up to the main road about 1/4 mile from the house and it was a parking lot so we turned around and prepared to fight the fire if we needed to. My wife finally got out because she was able to hike out, but I stayed by myself for the next 4 days without power or water but the fire never got within a couple of miles of our place.  They’ve built a large housing development (800 homes) about a mile from me and the road is the same narrow 2 lane road so I’d imagine getting out nowadays would be even more problematic, hope we don’t have to find out.

We have friends and family not too far from the fires.  We're keeping in close touch with them.  Prayers they won't need to evacuate.

IF you are so inclined, this month's Fire Department Coffee bundle supports the Orange County Fire Authority Benevolent Fund.  Their coffee is really top notch and the FD Association they are featuring is close to my heart.  More on the Benevolent Fund

This notice is for information only.  I am not intending to solicit in any way.

Gatlinburg fire. The video below is NSFW for language and situation. At about 12:30, the guy blocking the road probably did not make it out. Moderator lenience requested. This video made an impression on me.

So later when the Wears Valley fire happened, I was about 10 minutes up the road from my lady at home. I went in ahead of the emergency response, the fire was up to the right and our place to the left. Fire trucks were less than a minute behind me.

I got to our place, she had her tow rig almost to the RV, I completed hooking it up (had a key for it on my ring) as she brought out the cat. Anything else to get? I said "no." Computer? "No." Which car are you driving? "My truck, spare tow vehicle."

We left everything including a vintage Camaro and an expensive Challenger. Ammo, Guns, Jewelry. Paperwork. Memories. We got down the mountain through heavy smoke. We checked with binoculars over the next few days from the church in the valley (I already knew we could see it from the mountain). Our place survived with just some smoke and soot. Anyway, here is why you do not ever want to wait to evacuate:

It's amazing that they were able to escape with their lives.

Thanks for the video, it was horribly enlightening.

It's amazing how fast these fires can spread.

There was a guy on Fox News that lost his house in that Tubbs fire and now his house in this fire! Talk about bad luck! Poor guy 😳

In looking at the images and news of the fires, only because my daughter and her family still live there, I found it interesting that an article in India Today talks about how the LA Mayor cut the fire fighters budget. Residents in towns like Alta Dena are fighting their own fires.

I’ll bet the city and county departments of Diversity and Inclusion have hellacious budgets though.

I have more to say, but I’ll stop there. Glad I left.

I don't remember if it was the Tubbs, Kincaid,  or Glass fire, but a doctor lost a home up here in Sonoma County and a month or two later lost the new house in a Malibu fire.

And in the Tubbs fire several firefighters lost theirs as they were trying to save others.

I've read accounts that they don't have the water to fight the fires due to low pressure from reservoirs being prevented from being refilled by natural means. I've also read about the LAFD budget being cut by the 17 million that Pat referred to. Fire budget $863,000,000, homeless budget $1,300,000,000. I guess it's a good thing they allotted the 1.3 billion to the homeless...they're going to need it.

I'm curious as to whether the no water for fighting the fires is true. I have no doubt the rest is true.

That said, I feel for the people, rich and famous or poor and unknown, that have lost everything they own along with their most treasured possessions.

I've also read what you listed and also they were supposedly diverting the water to the ocean because of the smelt fish to protect them. Hmmm.....I don't know who to believe now!
