This structure is located in the Sierra Nevada range just east of the North Fork Kings River confluence near the PG&E company town of Balch Camp. The south flank of the span is in Sequoia National Forest whereas the north is in Sierra National Forest. This Bailey Bridge was installed at the Kings River in 1946. Bailey Bridges were designed during World War II to be used as portable spans. The design required no special tools to install, and the structures are generally light enough to be hauled by truck. Similar spans were used extensively in northern California after the 1964 Christmas Floods and along the many washed out State Highways. It is rare to see Bailey Bridges in use as permanent structures. Blackrock Road is approximately 29 miles long and maintained as Forest Road 11S012. The corridor begins at the end of Trimmer Springs Road at the Kings River near Kirch Flat and follows the North Fork Kings River to the Wishon Reservoir at McKinley Grove Road. The roadway begins a paved rapid one lane ascent from Balch Camp to the Blackrock Reservoir and high clearance dirt grade to McKinley Grove Road. Blackrock Road was constructed in 1923 as an extension of Trimmer Springs Road. The purpose of the corridor was to allow the San Joaquin Power & Light Company (now PG&E) access to the North Fork Kings River to construct the Balch Powerhouse. Said powerhouse was complete by 1927 and is served by the company town of Balch Park due to the extremely isolated locale. Edited January 7 by Subdeacon Joe 1 3 Quote
