Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I've noticed lots of people running in the rain from stores to their cars etc. with hoodies over their heads or hats or nothing. What happened to umbrellas? I have one in my car and in my house to get to the garage when it's raining hard. I see very few people with umbrellas! I'm just curious how many of you actually use an umbrella? I think it's a great invention myself! 3 Quote
Pat Riot Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I rarely use one. My wife uses one all the time. Actually, now that I think about it, I have used an umbrella about once a year for decades. It’s only if it’s raining and I am wearing a suit. 2 Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I don't think I've used one in half a century or more. I prefer a hat. Less bulky and leaves your hands free. My only real concern is keeping rain off of my glasses. 2 1 Quote

A hat takes the place of an umbrella for me as well. 3 Quote
Redleg Reilly, SASS #46372 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Always use one, maybe with a hat. Carried one when seeing my surgeon and he remarked that he couldn't remember the last time he had seen anyone carry an umbrella. 1 1 Quote

Calamity Kris Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 All the time. It rains A LOT here in Florida. The walk between my office and my car is great, close to a quarter mile. If I tried the hat or hood method, I would be soaked by the time I got to my car. 3 Quote
Cypress Sun Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I carry two umbrellas in my truck and have one in the garage for the mail, if needed. I only use them if it is raining hard. For light rain, I walk as fast as I can, running is not an option anymore. The only thing I don't like is putting the dripping wet umbrella back into the truck. I forgot, I only have one umbrella in the truck. I gave the other one away to a young couple I saw embracing each other while waiting the pouring rain at a bus stop. Rolled down the window, handed it off, rolled up the window and left...not a word was spoken....the look of gratitude in the guys eyes was enough thanks for me. 5 2 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I keep a couple in the truck. If on the rare occasion I carry one it's usually one of the small ones with a a J handle that when closed I can hang on a belt loop. I've got a large one I use to walk the Rottweiler when it's raining. More for her than me!! 2 1 Quote

For 3 years in a row I received those mini pop up umbrellas for Christmas for a total of 5. Not sure why. I think “Totes” made them. Anyway, I gave them to homeless people. All of them were happy to receive them. 5 1 Quote
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 MY Sweetheart always has one handy. Gives me the perfect reason to walk REALLY REALLY close to her. 2 1 Quote

I have two short self opening ones in my car. They are small enough to fit the back door pockets and small enough I can carry one even if it looks like it might rain I have a couple of full sized ones in the front hall closet, too. Last two winters we haven't had much use for them and we can sure use the water. 1 Quote
Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 31, 2024 Author Posted December 31, 2024 I have a 25’ walk from the garage to the house so if it’s pouring I’ll use the umbrella especially if I’m carrying a couple bags of groceries. Same from the store to the car if it’s raining real hard but if it’s just a drizzle or light rain no. Quote

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I saw a guy yesterday riding a bike and using an umbrella. No fender, I reckon he learned about rooster tails. 1 2 Quote
Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Last time I used one was moose hunting. We used to keep old, damaged ones in the boats. When you were on a watch and it started to sleet or rain, opening one and ducking behind it, out of whatever the wind was driving, it kept you a little more comfortable. A STERNO can made it almost cozy. Almost. 1 1 Quote
Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Both my wife and I have the little small ones (Totes) in our cars. Was cleaning out the cars a couple of weeks ago and found mine under the passenger seat. Opened the little cover thing and it still had the price tag on it for $4.99. Since I don't recall ever buying one, not sure who gave it to me or when it first appeared! Regards Gateway KId 1 1 Quote
Stump Water Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 If it looks like it might rain or is raining and I have to be outside for an extended amount of time I'll carry/use one. Only reason that comes to mind that I would have to be outside when it's raining is a grave-side funeral service. If it's pouring down when I get to the store I wait in the truck. If it doesn't let up in a bit I leave. If it looks like it might start pouring down while I'm in the store/restaurant then I'll carry the bumbershoot. Quote
Linn Keller, SASS 27332, BOLD 103 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 You can go about anywhere at the County Fair if you dress Western and have a pair of leather gloves stuck in a hip pocket. Or so I reasoned. There I was in my oilskin hat and Aussie drover's coat (it's traditional for it to rain during Fair Week!) and no idea why I pulled the umbrella out of the Jeep, but I did. Saw a mother and her 8 year old junior cheerleader daughter sheltering under the sausage trailer's awning. I went up to them and handed the mother the umbrella. She gave me an astonished look and then a smile and then she exclaimed "But what about you?" I laughed and said "I'm wearin' mine!" and continued slogging through the Midway with a grin on my face. 5 2 Quote

DocWard Posted January 1 Posted January 1 I have a couple of full size umbrellas. One in my office, and one here at home, just in case I'm caught unaware. Otherwise, I have variety of rain jackets, coats, and otherwise water repellent garments. If I do get caught without either, I refuse to run. I always remember the old adage: It doesn't rain in the Army. It rains ON the Army. Quote
