So I had to ship some brass to a pard from an Escondido post office because our local one is so screwed up. They don’t open until 10:00 and I was the first one there at about 9:50ish. An older woman showed up and rattled the door and said “I can’t believe they’re closed today”. I told her that they would open at 10:00 and she said “How do you know that?” and I told her that it was written on the glass door right in front of her. Then she went on a foul language filled diatribe on why they open so late. A man walked in holding a bin full of packages and I offered him the counter space that I was standing at so he could set the bin down and the mad lady would not move so that he had enough room for the bin so he just sat a corner of the bin on the counter where I was. They opened the door and I offered the lady to go in first because she seemed to be in a real hurry and she said “I’ll wait my turn”. So I went in and was greeted by the first clerk and started the shipping process and this woman came over to the next clerk that had opened up and started chewing him out about the post office not opening until 10:00. The clerk was a young black kid with a mask on and very polite and trying to smooth her over and she would not quiet down so he went and got his supervisor I guess it was and he tried to explain to the lady why they opened later. She then went on another tirade about the kid that waited on her shouldn’t be allowed to wear a mask and the guy told her that the kid was recovering from leukemia and for his health he wore the mask. She didn’t care and said that it wasn’t right. I finished up and really wanted to tell the woman what I thought of her but didn’t and left.

I needed a cup of coffee after that so went through a drive thru coffee place that had to close up their walk in cafe because the homeless taking over the tables and restrooms had really been a problem. As I was pulling up to the drive thru a family of 5 with 3 teenage kids walked up to the door and tried to get in. They were right beside my truck and the dad was rattling the door and banging on it trying to get in so I rolled down my window and told him the cafe part was closed and why and he started in on how it shouldn’t make any difference and they should open it up regardless. The kids were pretty cool trying to calm their dad down but the woman on the other hand was getting as mad as the dad was. I rolled up the window and went thru the drive thru and got my coffee.

I got to about 1/2 mile from my home and a pickup with a utility bed pulled out in front of me and one of the doors on the utility bed flew open and a couple of Milwaukee drills and other tools came flying out into the road. I honked my horn and flashed my headlights but he just kept going down the road. I finally caught up with him and got him to pull over and told him about the tools and he thanked me and kept going down the road, didn’t even turn around. I turned around and went back to where tools had spilled and there were 2 landscapers gathering up the tools. I told them what happened and probably because they didn’t speak English they finished picking them up and drove off. I took a picture of the truck and license plate but it had a 2021 registration sticker on it so no idea who owns it now.

The public never ceases to amaze me anymore. What the heck happened to people. Happy to say people are mostly civil still around here.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the general public has forgotten how to be civil? I think things have gotten far worse since people were locked down during the pandemic. I know I'm just an old curmudgeon, but it seems like the wife, and I witness stuff like Yul mentioned far too often when we venture out of the house.

Yep, it seems like the belligerence factor has increased. My wife and I think it’s related to the internet and the fact that anyone can say what they want on social media with no fear of being challenged and it carries over into their face to face interaction with people.

It's quite noticeable around here. Seems like everyone is running around with a bottle of nitroglycerine shoved up their *** just waiting for something trivial to blow up on ever since the plague.

On the other hand, my trip to the post office today was completely uneventful even though the obese lady, the only person in front of me, wanted to stare at her damn cell phone instead of taking her turn.

Guess I'm fortunate to live in Rural Montana.  Haven't seen any of that, not even in Billings, though I don't get down there often.  Maybe just too people dense and stressful.  Where I lived as a boy, a small town, there was an old man, healthy, well groomed. always cheerful with a pleasant greeting to people he met.  I have carried him in memory, and approaching his age, tried my best to recreate his persona.  Seems to work a high percentage of the time.  I go prepared for the times it doesn't, so far very rare.

On the other hand...!  :)

I was up early today and decided to pop over to Tractor Supply, on the chance they might have a few leftover toys.  (They have GREAT old-school toys at Christmastime, and if I could I was gonna stock up for a few upcoming little kid birthdays.)

Well, I was outside the door a good fifteen minutes before they opened, and a lady employee came out to set up the ouside barbecuer display.  She struck up an engaging conversation, asked about my Christmas, and was downright delightful.  When the doors were finally opened, she grinned and said "Be sure to let me know if you need help spending money!"

Surprisingly, there were quite a few toys still on the shelves.  I could not find the price on a metal Jeep.  When the same gal passed by, I asked about the price; she couldn't find it but said "Wait here!" and fetched a manager type.  This fella scanned it, told me the price, then smiled and said "but it's at least forty percent off - might be fifty!"

Same gal was at the checkout counter.  Smiles and full of personality; felt like I'd know her for years.  :)

Then, home for breakfast and a long nap.  A good day.  ^_^

My day ended well as the two neighbor kids that have been moving my garbage cans down to the street and back showed up to move them back up to the house just a few minutes ago. My wife and I were gone to a family dinner yesterday and when we got home the cans had been moved out to the street. I got a chance to visit with them and took their picture but my wife says not to post it unless their folks give the okay. So compared to some of the people that I met this morning these two young men were outstanding.

I truly believe that the holidays bring out the best and worst in people. Especially in areas of high prices, high taxation and heavy regulation. They already have a generally high stress level just from living where they live and then add the additional stress of cultural pressures, like; holidays, spending money, dealing with more people than usual, etc.

Areas like that breed or culturally influence the creation of a$$#oles.

Simple. :D

I probably would have let her have it or, arguably worse,  mocked her by going "blah, blah, blah".   This is a good reminder why I do so much shopping online.

I guess the strangest thing about this deal with the woman at the post office was that she never said why she was there like to buy stamps, pick up a package or pick up shipping boxes. It seemed like the only thing she was there for was to bitch at people.

For some reason most of them now think they are ENTITLED to being a$$holes. It is nation wide now. This country is headed in the wrong direction for sure. Not sure there is any hope left for a lot of them.

I tend to disagree. Most people I run into are fairly pleasant to deal with. Of course there are always exceptions. Just this morning at the gym, my friend and I were doing our usual jaw jacking when a miserable old woman a couple of machines yapped off at us because we were being "too loud". My friend told her to mind her own business and that it had nothing to do with her and I told her that we were having an A and B conversation so she could just C herself out of it. I later observed to my friend that she was probably all het up because she didn't HAVE anybody to talk to.

At the same time, we had been having a good day with virtually everybody else in the place. That seems to be the norm.

I think that for the most part, the country is headed in the right direction. The last election demonstrates that. Good sense seems to be coming back into style, while Political Correctness is on the way out for most people. There will always be those who can't stand to see others happy and live for nothing more than to be annoyed about SOMETHING.

The adults are back in charge, and the next few years should be better than the last.

I really believe that the entitled attitude and behavior all stems from the events of the plague. People got into social media platforms (including this one) in which they could maintain a sense of anonymity and perceived safety.

When the plague suddenly ended, they had to come out of hiding and reenter the real world but still have the illusion of they can say anything, wear anything and/or do anything they want to do without facing consequences.

Allowing them to get away with their rude behavior only encourages them to continue it. It is odd that when confronted, they consider the person confronting them to be the rude, obnoxious party.

I sure hope you are right. Here in the Austin area the new transplants have not been good for us. They think they are above everyone else and it is getting annoying. They are rude at the stores and restaurants, they run red lights and run stop signs and think the posted speed limit is just a suggestion. Just yesterday I stopped at the red light to turn left and the car behind started honking his horn wanting me to go ahead and turn left even though it was red. I just sat their getting the bird shot at me for making him wait for the green light. You had better always slow down for stop signs and green lights because people just want to run them. When you get a green light you need to look both ways before pulling out because more than half the time someone is going to run their red light and fly through the intersections. I see at least 2 or more accidents a day because of someone not following the law. I sure hope you are correct and things will start to turn around but unless the Austin PD starts writing tickets I don't think they will change here. More than once my wife and I have had people just push their way in front of us while in line for a cashier like their time is more precious than ours and they didn't want to wait their turn at the back of the line. We have really started thinking of moving out of this area and into a smaller community hoping for a better environment. Way too many transplants here for us. At 75 we would love to have a quieter community than we now have here.

While it certainly feels that way far too often, I wonder if the 24/7 news cycle and social media magnifies the negativity that is actually out there.

I'm absolutely certain that it does. In years past, we got news pretty much in three or four, 1/2 hour segments. There was the 6:00 o'clock evening news from the network, which covered anything of interest to the whole country. A 6:30 local report, a 7:00 o'clock network report which was more or less a replay of the 6:00 o'clock, and finally a 11:00 o'clock nightly report which combined the national headlines with the local.

Now, with the 24/7 news, they have to try to report on something, whether it's of any import or not. It's kind of like listening to the morning traffic report. With everything they have to say, you'd think that it was even money at best whether you could make it to work or not. A very few events get noticed BECAUSE they're not normal. The Lame Stream Media has to do the same on a much larger scale to try to be relevant to our lives. And get advertising revenue. They have to do THAT so that they can try to get their agenda, (yes, I mean political agenda) to as many sheeple as they can, again to try to be relevant.

And we can't forget the old adage, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease". Tie that in with social media and so many of those types promoting their "content" for "likes" and such that seem to get the attention they crave by screaming about something, it's not that hard to see why we see more people acting this way. Throw in the way modern "medicine" is continuously coming up with new "conditions" to explain bad behaviour, and it's a wonder we don't see more of this than we do.

The best thing we can do to counter all of this is treat people with respect, the way we were raised to, until they prove that they don't deserve it, and occasionally call them out on their crap so that onlookers might see them in their ignorance, and perhaps learn from it. And because doing so can be incredibly self satisfying.
